لا زلت يا ربع الشباب حميدا
You still shine, O youth, glorious
إليكم تذل النفس من بعد عزة
To you the soul is humbled after dignity
تروم مقام العز والذل نازل
The abode of might and abjection comes and goes
بشرى العلاء فذي مطالع سعده
Good tidings, O Alaa, for one whose ascendant bodes well
ما حلية الدنيا سوى أمجادها
The glories of the world are its only adornments
لقد قلت للأرض ادعت بنجومها
I said to the earth, "Boast over me with your stars."
أحق بالعز من لا يرهب الخطرا
He who does not fear danger deserves honor
حيتك بكر النظم غدوه
The dawn of poetry greeted you at morn
غمضت بغتة جفون الفناء
The eyes of oblivion closed suddenly
قد خططنا للمعالي مضجعا
We had lofty aspirations laid out,
أدر يا نديمي علينا الكؤوسا
Turn my friend the cups around us
كم ذا تطارح في منى ورقاءها
How often does she wander in the meadows
أهاشم تيم جل منك ارتكابها
The transgressions of the Banu Umayyah, O Hashim,
قد عهدنا الربوع وهي ربيع
We were accustomed to the spring, while it was spring
ألله يا حامي الشريعه
O God, O Protector of the Law
إن لم أقف حيث جيش الموت يزدحم
If I do not stand where the army of death crowds,
حلولك في محل الضيم داما
Your solutions replace oppression forever
إن ضاع وترك يا بن حامي الدين
If your vigour is lost, O son of Hamid al-Din
ألفتك نافرة الظباء الهيف
The wild deer fled from you in fright
يا نعش ما يصنع الفصيح
O coffin, what can the eloquent do
لقد ولدت أم المفاخر ماجدا
The mother of glories has given birth to Majid
أبدين تفاح الخدود
With cheeks like red apples
عهدت بذات البان فالجزع أربعا
I entrusted myself to the slopes of Al-Ban, so grief became fourfold
قد كان داؤك للشريعة داءا
Your malady was once a plague upon the Law
يا نسيم الصبا وريح الجنوب
O breeze of the morning and wind of the south
حيتك سارقة اللحاظ من الظبا
Your smile steals glances like a gazelle
عجل الصب وقد هب طروبا
The morning hastened as a refreshing breeze blew,
حملتك الديار مالا تطيق
The homelands have burdened you with more than you can bear
قبيح بحقك أن تبخلا
It is ugly of you to be stingy
خذي قلبي إليك فقلبيه
Take my heart into yours and turn it about,
أبشر فيك العلى والشرف
I bring you glad tidings of glory and honor,
حي تحت الدجى محيا أنارا
Alive beneath the dew I lit up the night
طرب الدهر فاستهل منيرا
The epoch rejoiced, dawning radiant
أسقتك يا ربع الحبيب قطارها
I quenched your thirst, my beloved, with her train
أرأيت كيف بدا يشير
I saw how his glances began to gesture,
وصبت وريعان الشبيبة مونق
The blossoms of youth have withered and the garments of old age worn thin
تلك المودة ما رأي العلى فيها
That affection, what is the view of the exalted one regarding it?
سبقت الورى مجدا يدوم بلا حد
You have surpassed all in lasting glory,
يا هماما لفضله
O source of nobility
يا أمجد الناس فرعا
O most glorious of people, a branch
كفأ الإِله إناءها
God had perfected her creation
قد علمنا فقر العفاة إليه
We knew the poverty of the helpless towards Him
وجدك ما خلت الردى منك يقرب
Your presence did not spare me grief
أأهنيك قائلا لك بشرى
Should I congratulate you saying good tidings,
درى لا درى دهر ذممنا طباعه
The ages knew not, nor did their natures realize
كل يوم يسومني الدهر ثكلا
Every day brings me new sorrows
اطوياني ملامة وانشراني
Wrap me in blame and unfold me
سنام علائي لم يقرع
The summit of my glory was never attained,
عودي بطرفك يا قريش كليلا
Return with your glances, O Quraish, at nightfall,
حبست رجائي عن الباخلين
I have denied my hopes from the misers,
أظبى الردى أنصلتي وهاك وريدي
I have unsheathed my sword and bared my arm, and here is my forearm
قل للنسيم وقد سرى
Tell the breeze, as it gently blows
بشرى بروج الجود بشراها
The constellations of generosity herald good tidings,
يا أصدق الناس وأوفى من وعد
O most faithful of people and most true to his promise
إن يبلغنك عن جود امرئ خبر
If news of a man's generosity reach you,
للمجد طلعتك البهية
Your radiant rise is for glory
أغائر دمعك أم منجد
Your tearful eyes, are they dew or lightning?
ما لهم يا قبر قد جدوا انصرافا
Why, O grave, have they labored, after burying chastity within you,
قد بلوناك في قديم الليالي
We tested you in days gone by
ولاؤك أنفع ما يذخر
Your loyalty is the most useful thing stored
نفسي بحبل ولاء أحمد أمسكت
My soul with the rope of loyalty I held
قل لأم العلى ولدت كريما
Tell the mother of grace, you gave birth to a generous one
إن قلت عذرا لها ما أبطأت سأما
If you apologize for her delay, I will not grow weary
قم ناشد الإِسلام عن مصابه
Arise and ask Islam about its affliction,
يا رياض الوصال أثمرت غيدا
O garden of reunion, you have borne branches,
كذا يظهر المعجز الباهر
Thus the dazzling miracle appears
أحسين مذ الحفاظ انتضاكا
More beautiful than preserving decorum
ذكرت بذات البان حيث مضى لنا
I recalled the pasture lands of Albān, where
لتلو لوي الجيد ناكسة الطرف
The excellent youth bows his head down in sorrow
عين فتانة لها القلب خدر
A bewitching eye that captivated my heart
رأت المشيب بعارضيك فغاظها
She saw the gray hair in your temples and it annoyed her
لا أرى للزمان يا صاح عذرا
I see no excuse for time, O friend
حمد الركب في حماك مناخه
The caravan praised its rest in your protection,
يا سمي الذي فداه من الذبح
O one whose name was ransomed from slaughter
أيامنا بك بيض كلها غرر
Our days with you are all radiant pearls
حازم يسلس من بعد الشماسِ
The cautious one shines after the torchbearer
قد أصبح الدهر يجلو منظرا حسنا
The days are turning auspicious and fair
مني القصد وتحقيق الرجاء
My purpose is noble, my aspiration pure
يا بن الإمام العسكري ومن
O son of Imam al-Askari, the one
أي بشرى كست الدنيا بهاءا
What good tidings have adorned the world with splendor!
حزت بالكاظمين شأنا كبيرا
You were honored with the patient ones greatly
كم توعد الخيل في الهيجاء أَن تلجا
How often do horses promise in the battle's heat, that they will charge,
أقائم بيت الهدى الطاهر
I stand at the sacred House of Guidance
أمية غوري في الخمول وأنجدي
Umayya, immerse yourself in languor, and support me,
نعى الروح جبريل بأن ذوي الغدر
Gabriel lamented that the treacherous people
عثر الدهر ويرجو أن يقالا
Time stumbled and longs for it to be said
جاز النسيم على الغيد الرعابيب
The breeze passed over the swaying branches
وأغيد منسوب إلى العرب لاح لي
I saw an Arab boy with a beauty spot,
يا لائمي وشهاب وجدي ثاقب
O you who blame me, my passion's flame is piercing
ألا بكر الناعي بثأو ثواءه
Alas the first to lament with streaming tears
فويل القريض لقد أصبحت
Woe to poetry! For through it
ليت مني نياط القلب إلى قسطنطين
Would that a telegraph wire from my heart to Constantinople
يا من لويت به يد الخطب
O you around whom I have wound the hand of fortune,
صبح الهنا اليوم تجلى أبيضا
The delight of our days has dawned white today,
طلعت كبدر دجى تزف سلافها
You emerged like the full moon in the dark night, perfuming its procession,
حيتك من وجناتها بشقيقها
Her greetings reached you from her branches with her anemone,
عشقت ظماء الكشح لا بل غراثها
I loved the thirst of al-Kashah, nay its downpour
دار بذي الأثل عهدناها
A house whose pillars we built of nobility
إحدى الغواني إلى الزوراء
One of the beauties to Zora
اسلم وحضرتك المهابه
Peace be upon you, O revered one,
ألفت قراع الخطب مذ أنا يافع
I have been composing poems since my youth,
يا غمرة من لنا بمعبرها
O overwhelming darkness, who can cross it?
لا تحني إذا أخو الشوق حنا
Do not bend when the brother of longing bends
نسب أناف على الأنام به
He attributed high nobility to people through it
أثنت عليك بأسرها الدول
The nations have praised you altogether
قدمتك العلى وكنت زعيما
You were given supremacy and you were a leader
الآن هون كل نائبة
Now soothe every adversity,
كذا يلج الموت غاب الأسود
Thus does death creep into the lair of the black lions
أعلمت طارقة الخطوب السود
You taught the dark nights of tribulation
أأحبابنا هل عائد بكم الدهر
Oh beloved friends, will the days bring you back?
وقفت على الزوراء وهي يتيمة
I stood at al-Zawra’ while it was desolate
وأبيك لا حي يدوم
Your father, though no longer alive, endures
قطعت لسانكم نفثة من أرقم
A breath from Arqam has silenced your tongues
للمصطفى والحسن الفعل معا
The chosen one and Al-Hasan together their deed
نسيت في عرفانك الحكماء
The wise forgot wisdom in knowing you,
وحش من الإنس من يعلق بصحبتهم
A beast among men is he who clings to their company,
أفلان لا تبغي الثنا فما
O Fulan do not seek praise, for
حي طيفا زار من سعدي لماما
A specter of Sa'di visited me at night
بقيتي هي بين الشوق والأرق
My remnants are between yearning and sleeplessness
بمجدك يا أعز علي مني
With Your glory, O most precious to me
بوركت طلعتك الغراء يا
Your radiant dawn was blessed, oh
يا قائما بالحق حل بنا
O you who stand for truth, a plight has befallen us
إيماض برق أم ثغور
Is it a flash of lightning or the lips
ذخرتك لي إن نابني الدهر مرهفا
I kept you in reserve should fate treat me harshly
قد جنى لي الزمان أعظم ذنب
Time has committed against me the greatest sin,
حيتك تنهمل انهمالا
Your greeting pours down
لتلق ملوك الأرض طوعا يد الصلح
Let the kings of the earth willingly extend the hand of peace
من حط هضبتك الرفيعه
O you who lowered the highlands,
عج لنادي التقى وحي البشيرا
Rejoice, O chosen club, inspired by the Prophet's guidance
عثر الدهر فاستقال سريعا
Time stumbled and fell swiftly
هذا كتاب أم حديقة روضة
Is this a book or a garden, a meadow
أرب القوافي قد غدا لك مذعنا
The rhymes' master has become submissive to you
أفعى الأسى طرقت وغاب الراقي
The serpent of sorrow struck and the sublime one departed
سقتك يا ربع العلى عهادها
I quenched you, O highest abode, with its obedience,
أجل من على ما خلت يرقاه فادح
Alas! He who ascended the heights of glory unparalleled,
إليك وقد كلت علينا العزائم
To you, as firm resolutions have been determined against us,
يا خير من صنع الجميل
O best of those who do good
أطلع شمس الراح ليلا أغيد
The sun of comfort rose at night and I sang
بنورك لا بالنيرات الثواقب
Not with stars but with your light
بشرى بمولود به ابتهج الزمن
Good tidings of a newborn who brings joy to time,
لا زلت يا دهر تجلو منظرا حسنا
O time, you still reveal a beautiful scene
أعلي أحلك الذروة العلياء
You are the highest, the most sublime peak,
يا دار جائلة الوشاح
O home of the lost veil,
أناعي قتلى الطف لا زلت ناعيا
I lament the slain youths of Karbala,
يا دهر ما شئت فاصنع هان ما عظما
O time, do as you please, for what great thing
كم تراني أستولد الأوقاتا
How often I give birth to time
أسفرت الأيام عن مرأى حسن
The days have unveiled a scene of beauty
فقلت على من رنة النوح والبكا
I asked, for whom are these wails and tears?
كم مقامات نهى حررها
How many stations of prohibition he wrote
طرقت فالأنام منها سكارى
The people were struck as if intoxicated,
وسم الربيع بزعمه ذات الأضا
Spring boasted of beauty, but spring has lied
ودار علا لم يكن غيرها
A house of lofty heights, none other like it
قد تبلغ الأنفس في ارتيادها
Souls may attain in their pursuits
يا خير من أعطى الجميل في الورى
O best of those who gave kindness in creation
مرت بنا أمس تميمية
A Tammimi girl passed by us yesterday
رف قلب المشوق لا للملاح
The heart of the longing one fluttered, not for the sailor,
يا جعفر الجود كم انهلت ظمآنا
O Ja'far, how much thirst have you quenched for us,
بكائي بعيني لم يكفني
My crying with my eyes did not suffice me
إن يطو مصباح المكارم ضارح
If the torch of virtues is extinguished,
فيا نير الدنيا الذي بضيائه
O light of the world, with your brilliance
سلام برقته قد حكى
His greeting's tenderness has told tales,
لقيت من الوجد واللائمينا
I have suffered from the blamers' rebuke and censure,
يا أبا الفضل كلما قلت شعرا
O Abu al-Fadl, whenever you recite poetry
وراءك اليوم عن لهوي وعن طربي
Behind you today, I leave my play and pleasure
نضارة عيش أزهرت واضمحلت
The blossoming of a life of joy has withered away,
هل الحب إلا ما أذاب حشا الصب
Is love anything but what melts the hardness of youth?
لقد رحلت عن ودنا فيه جفوة
She left against our affection, aloofness in her
قرع النعي بصوته سمعي
The elegist's voice struck my ears,
يا من بهمته عقدت رجاي إذ
O you upon whose resolve I built my hopes when
بنور وجهك لا بالشمس والقمر
Not by the sun or moon's light
ضمنت غلائل ربة الأرج
The locks of the mistress of fragrance
أنجوم بنورها يستضاء
Stars with their light to illuminate
ولاؤك أنفس ما يذخر
Your loyalty is the most precious treasure
عش مهنا فكل يوم يمر
Live professionally, for every passing day
لي العذر كل لسان القلم
My tongue deserves excuse, though eloquent
ما بال من نوهت دهرا
Why have I praised you for so long,
أمير المؤمنين أغث صريخا
O Commander of the Faithful, hear a cry,
حبست على اللهو قلبا طليقا
I confined a free heart to frivolity,
ولرب ريم طرفه
The glance of the one with tender eyes
أفحمتني وأنا المفوه
You confounded me, though I am eloquent,
لبست من الدهر ثوبا قشيبا
I wore a tattered robe of time
فتاة الحي حسبك من جفائي
O maiden of the alley, your disdain is enough for me
ما أكثر الناس لولا أنهم بقر
How many people, were they not mere cattle,
أكرر الطرف لا أرى أبدا
I keep turning my gaze, I never see
طمحت إليك فما ألذ طماحها
I yearned for you, how sweet was my yearning!
قفا حييا بالكرخ عني ربيبها
Stop the greetings in Al-Karkh, about the youth being reproached
اليوم قد صوت ناعي الهدى
Today the guide's crier sounded his call
باتت تعاطيني حمياها
Her affection showers me with its whiteness
رواقك ذا لا بل وليجة خادر
Your porches though unpeopled now have been
لو برد العذل من غليلي
If grief's chill would abate from my anguish,
هل يطربنك يا زمان نعائي
Does my lamentation please you, O Time?
ما للعيون حاربت رقادها
What ails these eyes that battled sleep
نعى الناعون للشرف المعلى
The elegists lament the honorable chief
فيك العلاء مضيئة أبراجها
يا شريفا به يزان المديح
أيا خير من يرتاده أمل الورى
حيا لك الباري صفي مودة
خلق شف فالنسيم كثيف
في فمي لم يزل لذكرك نشر
فتى منه أرضعت المكرمات
هي دار غيبته فحي قبابها
يا مليكا به الملوك أطافوا
أهدي إليك أخا الفخار تحية
أهاشم لا يوم لك ابيض أو ترى
لا تحذرن فما يقيك حذار
على كل واد دمع عينك ينطف
برزت تحمل بالراح راحا
أهذا نبي الهدى أحمد
شهدت لنفسك أن الكمال
نفحات السرورِ أحيت حبيبنا
بيت مجد إن حوى شكر الورى
قل لأبي الهادي الذي ما أخذت
رأيت الثنا في جعفر الجود صادقا
قامت تجنى لي في دلها
يا من براه الله روح كمال
باتت تروحني بنشر عبيرها
حدرت بأطراف البنان نقابها
لحى الله دهرا لو يميل إلى العتبى
ماذا تريدين بالدنيا يد القدرِ
أطار بك الناعي فؤاد العلى ذعرا
يا رواق العلى فقدت وقورا
أرى الأرض قد مادت لأمر يهولها
عادت مراثي تهنيات العلى
ملأت مكارمك البسيطة أنعما
كذا تفقد العين إنسانها
أما والهوى العذري ما بت ساليا
أتى اليوم حاتم أهل النهى
قل لأم العلى ولدت كريما
أنخ يا سعد ناجية القلاص
يا ثاويين إلى جنب الفرات معا
ألا يا أبا السجاد إن بوارقا
بشرى فمولد صاحب الأمر
قضاء حق الضيف أولى به
إذا لم أعود منك غير التفضل
ليس إلا إليك للعيس نشط
يا آل فهر أين ذاك الشبا
يعلم الله أن قلبي صفاة
دعوا كبدي ودونكم دموعي
أنى يخالط نفسك الأنس
تركت حشاك وسلوانها
وليلة قد ولدت بصبحها
خطرت في رداء حسن قشيب
أطال اشتغالي في هواه مهفهف
ظن العذول أدمعي تناثرت
إن التي سكنت ضميري
سعدت من عشية زار فيها
بشراك باليمن عليك وفدا
ملك عظيم القدر أم ملك
تظن الأنام بإقبالكم
إن في الكرخ بين تلك البيوت
أين في عصرنا نرى لك مثلا
زارت على رقبة عذالها
فاخري أيتها الدار النجوما
يا جوهر المجد بل يا جوهر الكرم
اضرب بسيف أو لسان
الفخر شاد بكم قبابه
