1. We were accustomed to the spring, while it was spring
Where, where is its familiar gathering?

2. Did the living descend or did
The rain pools of the downpour follow it or the cistern of the meadow?

3. Do not say its unity was split
Rather my patience that was split

4. How did the sting of worry make my heart
Sicken, O its vegetation! And through you the smooth flows

5. The tears outpaced when I said it quenched them
So I left heaven and said the tears

6. So it is as if I am in its courtyard, while it is rugged
Milking sorrow, while the eyelids are blinking

7. I spent the night reciting in it
Is there for the past a return?

8. The enclosures with necklaces claimed around me
What moaned amongst them to the wailing died out

9. It described to me with my embers, my carrier
That which it bowed from me the ribs over

10. It shared with me in its claim sadness, grief
When it moaned and my heart was anguished

11. O the goodness of the evening behind you from me
My yearning is no madness and infatuation

12. The intention of the blend did not calm me, but
From the bosom of childhood what frightens calmed me

13. I blamed the saplings while it was patient
And excused the patient while it was a sapling

14. Strange are the eyes that did not turn white
For an affliction in which the tears redden

15. And a misfortune which grew over it the nights
While it is for the resurrection in the hearts a suckling babe

16. Which day alarming in it the ages trembled
Until from it the ribs were shocked

17. Which day with the sword of transgression in it
The honor of Islam returned and it was feeble

18. The day the weight of the Prophet settled on the slain
And the foundations were shattered with the pounders

19. The day Hāshim struck with grief his face
Death, so death to whoever met it is horrifying

20. With swords in the battle they prayed, so for the horsemen
Prostration from around them and bowing

21. They stood in a stand in which the birds
Flocked around them, swirling and falling

22. A stand neither the sighted in it seeing
For bewilderment, nor the hearing hearing

23. The horizon from it was crowned with the gloom of dew
From the brilliance of white in it the lighting gleamed

24. So for the sun of day in it a setting
And for the sun of iron in it a rising

25. Wherever the souls soared radiantly
For the birds of doom over them a falling

26. In it men persisted with patience
In the interior of death whoever met it, shocked

27. The souls in them settled as bodies
It is might, protected and armored

28. In them a gap of mortality was blocked, valor
For the splitting open of the fearful gap, beginnings

29. And for it the glance, wherever a companion went
And for it the sword, wherever a sleeper spent the night

30. It did not stand with resolve except
And by it the tradition of others, undone, grew long

31. They craved to treat it with contempt, humiliation
But God refused and the sword, crafted

32. How can it bow to anything lesser than God
That which humility did not bow to

33. And it has more severity than a coat of mail
For the cleaving of skulls while they are light

34. And by it the protectors return to a chest
The earth narrowed and it in it wanders

35. So it refused to live except mighty
Or the struggle was revealed and it a martyr

36. It met the throngs alone but every
Limb in it a crowd, horrifying

37. Its spear from its straightness as if from
Its resolve the edge of its sword molded

38. It married the sword to the souls but
Their dowry is death and the red marriage consummation

39. By my father shields on the youth a protection
It in the blade of determination unyielding

40. After it they cut off its head, and O beloved
Of the vein of Islam you are the flock

41. And they walked the dignities of the revelation captives
And but for you the son of Umayyah the vile

42. If only you could see it while the staff its
Eye pops from the travel over what you can bear

43. And behind it chastity calls and from it
I wonder atop it any remainder and beauty

44. Its insides full of burning and anguish
So have mercy on it for it is only

45. A blossoming weeping and a frightened heart
Do not call it the pulling of mortals or know

46. The female gazelle of the cheek, what are mortals and toying?
Tear down, O you tents exalted, Nizar

47. For the pillar sublime has been torn down
And fill O Umayyah my eyes with sleep

48. For Hussein on the ground lies slain
And leave the pounding of the brows woe

49. Your pounding them and the tears do not avail
With the hands a slap! Why not

50. With swords that do not fear the shields?
And with the tears, grief, why not

51. With the blood of stabbing and the spears beasts?
Say, nay! The bumping of the confused slain forehead

52. O jaws, where is the thick blown?
