1. Your smile steals glances like a gazelle
That charms wine and the soft morning breeze

2. You came smiling, your incisors veiled
So you shone like a full moon at dusk

3. When you raised your cup it was as though
A sun rose gleaming from the wine

4. You tied your sash wrapped at the waist
And wound round your hips a gilded sash

5. I loved that you came to me a passionate lover
Whose longing the gentle gazelles shared

6. You are the one who plays at night, and for you
The daughters of passion made your heart their playground

7. You made me gentle with your nature
By a breeze whose perfume filled the morning

8. My boon companion, if he sang your name
Even a rock would dance enthralled

9. From your words you poured a gentler, sweeter draught
Than wine or anything more delicious

10. You sang melodiously, your tune enthralling
The bright full moons and making them dance

11. As if you knew of the Prophet's wedding feast
And sang especially for the Son of Arakah

12. On a night whose felicity in that hour
Was the most blessed in time’s span

13. Joy came to entertain and feast,
Honoring guests with utmost hospitality

14. Its gladness encompassed the whole land
For he was beloved to every soul

15. So it was as if all good souls
Rejoiced at the Prophet's wedding

16. From his sunset the west congratulated the east
And from his dawn the east greeted the west

17. They rightly rejoiced, for the age
In it was most wondrously strange

18. In old age it brought a joy never known
To any who were fresh faced in youth

19. For mankind it is a thing to thank
That they have not lost their purest eloquence

20. To the soft-blowing south wind of Karkh convey
My finest greetings borne on your fragrance

21. And send prayers to the house the world
Has flourished from, ever verdant

22. The house in Zurah that drips blessings
As if from rain it gushed and flooded

23. Say, when you greet it, satisfied,
None but you can draw near it in awe

24. Give glad tidings with a cheerful early night
That the world smiles and dances to you

25. And the auspicious time shone on you
A radiant rising whose fortune never sets

26. So delight in the coolness of your sight, for glory
Has risen resplendent, wondrous to behold

27. Pitiful is he who wore the striped cloak in exile
While the master of the lofty palace casts it off

28. How strange is time, accompanying its stinginess
While your generosity never leaves its side

29. It sees your shining brow in its nobility
While from it faces bloom and split like buds

30. For guests you opened up pupils dark as caves
More vast than the moon’s empty wideness

31. You shouldered the age’s load, which would have wearied
Even if their fathers bore but some of its burden

32. As for your glory, even if none wrote
Of your generosity the world’s register

33. Their drawing but a sip exhausted the oceans,
And after them their wringing out the clouds was miserly

34. So when can the oceans and trains of clouds
Match your stature, surging and flooding forth

35. One in dire thirst would ransom your moist fingers
Over his own shriveled and withered ones

36. If a drought afflicted the earth’s face
You would see it barren till resurrection’s dawn

37. You sweetened the taste of one whose mouth was stingy
While your mouth made blessings taste most sweet

38. So that even for his own subsistence
Straitness increased, while for guests you gave openly

39. You encompassed time’s breadth with your palm’s generosity
While time's breast from you cleft and split

40. You restrained your soul's whims and broke
Its infatuation, crushing its shoulders

41. You hastened to excel with a resolve
Before which the meteors’ path seemed too high

42. You soared to where eyes fell short of you
And climbed to where the stars aimed below you

43. The stream of glory confessed that you were its bosom
While beside you glory's waves were arduous

44. Whenever you marched alone in pride
Your example marched with you in parade

45. You became affiliated with the cave of glories
To which the stars incline to be appended

46. They are the nobility's gems, from which the world
Plucked the ripe fruit of generosity unplundered

47. Their lofty roots flourished on high
And their virtues irrigated their goodly yield

48. Your generosity is the most just witness
To describe one whose generosity they eclipsed

49. And truly when I contemplated an easy life
I found its meaning to be your youth

50. And when I examined the name of the morning breeze
I found it termed the spirit of contentment

51. The mark of your honor in its features
By God, none but you can bring this into being

52. You adorned glory's sky with a star
That by your glory was the brightest star

53. For the sun, though it follows, wished
To follow the moon, its peer, with a successor

54. Compared to your flowing bounty the Euphrates' torrent waned
For it was more copious and sweeter than its stream

55. Do not vie with Hatim of Tayy, just unfold
His virtues and you will find them stranger

56. And mention him only for his great
Generosity, which if seen, would astound

57. Leave Khaseeb, for had he ruled his kingdom
Al-Hadi would have given it singly to surpass him

58. The Perfect, the Ultimate Praise, who was never attained
The Giver, the Sustenance that will never be exhausted

59. Your palms poured forth more plentiful than clouds
Rather, they were more comprehensive and fertile than them

60. They are better than however many bracelets of love and devotion
Were clasped, and his brother more glorious than a single clasp

61. They rose like the two brilliances, and since they illuminated
The horizon of generosity had not glimpsed the like

62. For loftiness in glory they were the farthest ascent
And for guests the nearest place sought

63. Those others who emulated them
The path of generosity adopted no doctrine

64. You remain in bounty and delight
As long as the lofty expanse bears any star
