1. The excellent youth bows his head down in sorrow
And the Hāshimites with kindness have their noses broken

2. And on the ground lay scattered their nobility’s arrows
No arrows remained, and their overflowing (generosity) heals

3. O Mudar, O red (garment), do not unfold your garb
For your garb today is more deserving to be folded

4. O victor, return your eyelids over the ḥadhā
For whom are you after today with drooping eyelids?

5. Let the shooting of Nu‘mān’s braves scatter their sparks
For after my father what are they to frailty?

6. O Banū Baydā, of noble descent, faces
And beauty, and swords they are lightning in the grasp

7. Are you not, when the war bares its leg from its dress
And bares its fang, and diminishes the lip of death

8. You drag to it the tail of every high-bred horse
Repelling the hyena through the rending, and the bustard through pelting?

9. How then are you satisfied with the heat of its bowstring
With the water of dissolution, after the tribe’s drinking to satiation?

Did it not come to you that al-Husayn disputed

11. The rights over his body until he settled in the earth of al-Taff ?
With noses that disliked the stench, so they stank

12. Breaking with rage while they were quivering of nose
O Abā Hassān, today your sons were encircled

13. By the arriving of swords from the direction of the low ground
They bent their side toward death when it refused

14. To be sated with disgrace, bent of side
Verily they were mustered a mustering of the thirsty for abasement

15. Thirstily, and not a single person quenched his thirst but with yearning
They stood firm where the war did not poison for them a stance

16. Nor did it, through fear, clench upon their palms
Ask al-Taff about them, where yesterday they stamped their heels

17. And where today they have refrained from the courtyard of al-Taff
And did the march of this day leave for their clans

18. A pillar of might that would rouse the living for march?
No, by your father’s goodness, there did not remain of them

19. A battered one, or mighty to batter the enemy and the rank
They walked beneath the shadow of the swaying swords, all of them

20. With burning hearts, to the place of death
So those upon the sands are their slain bodies

21. While their women over there are prisoners in fetters
They walked with their noses forward and after them

22. You would imagine Nu‘mān cleaving the sand dune with its nose
Does the crippled control his sword

23. To defend himself while he is without a palm?
Take, O hearts of the Talibiyyūn, an ulcer

24. That will remain through the nights, bloody of scab
She who did not budge from the abodes has been brought out

25. An evening without a cave in which to lodge
Verily the people's hands removed her veil from her

26. While silk of India was the edging of her veil

27. She had a voice that, from too much coquetry,
Was hoarse, and today it is weakened from frailty

28. She cried for the loss of her intimate one
As she cried in the litter, missing an intimate one

29.
She was frightened by the attack of the people entirely

30. To her son and he was above the ground buried
She called out to him when she saw him naked

31. The winds of morning blowing on his body what they blow

32. I carried before your day all misfortunes
But they did not weaken my back nor enfeeble my shoulder

And I endured from my time all itsvicissitudes

34. But my patience was not worn out before losing you in hardship
