1. O time, do as you please, for what great thing
Can trouble one around whom sorrows throng?

2. Misfortunes gathered and united here -
They lessen what's to come and what is gone.

3. Why has the night of nights in him conceived,
Would it and its cursed days were barren!

4. He mastered life and from it gained
The looks and hearts he wished to hold in thrall.

5. The one whose hands spread bounty passed away;
Now only nights of trials remain.

6. Now hopes stray wandering,
And who in time will wet his mouth with them?

7. The tent of glory now is bent, no wonder -
The firmest pillars of the heights fell down.

8. Let lifetime order mourning for the one
Whose life in good deeds was fully arranged.

9. And let the world's eye weep for him whose hand
Was sweetest bounty, slaying misers' souls.

10. How could the grateful's thanks content you when
Alive and dead they crowned your neck with bounty?

11. Once your face drew down clouds,
And now your tomb draws dew.

12. You were the rain that made good deeds grow green,
So bountiful the rain burst from your hand.

13. O you who blamed each heart you found at fault,
Stop blaming! Share with me these flowing tears.

14. Reproach deaf time wherever it has come
With thunder, leaving us to moan in silence.

15. You buried one the destitute took shade in -
Would you and time had lost your shadow utterly!

16. Does the betraying age know, having no knowledge,
What destiny attacked with its assault?

17. What misfortune equals this that struck among
Mankind beyond this one that swooped and struck?

18. The wise one gone - was he the chieftain of wisdom?
The noble one gone - was he the father of nobility?

19. The one all people missed - was he the one
Whose dynasties all nations came to lament?

20. But every dead soul has some refuge;
Only in his death Islam was torn.

21. The obsequies stood in the abode of peace for him,
So I said, after you would the cosmos were not intact!

22. His glad tidings to the healthy were inseparable
Until inside their bowels it turned to agonizing pain.

23. If it laments you, do not upbraid it,
For with your flowing rain its eye flowed harmoniously.

24. These tears are remnants of the waters of their life
From the surplus of your constant care for them.

25. If they do not pour down their souls' anguish,
Then after you their near ones will pour copiously.

26. O you who departed, though the state recites for you,
Speech itself in sadness is muted.

27. And what can my mouth say, when the inevitable
Has taken you, though your days should have surpassed old age?

28. But destiny insisted you submit
To a crisis that left no breathing space.

29. Would that your day had not come to pass
If the Pen could be stilled from writing as it listed!

30. So you could relieve the gloomy, clouded sorrows
As you had relieved their like before.

31. You depart and leave this year clad
In darkness - who is left for it and to whom will it complain of rape?

32. Was your death moment this, when woes thronged
Upon it and disasters mounted up?

33. I wished your day had not flowed on
If only the Pen could have been stopped from writing!

34. Until you relieved the gloomy sorrows
As you had relieved their like before.

35. What is intended for people of earth? - rushed on them
An abyss about to uproot the breath itself.

36. Your Lord hinted to unleash torment on it
When its sins outraged decency.

37. So He locked off its water springs and folded up
Your person from it, and life was cut off.

38. Earth's people carried your bier as if
They'd borne no weight, so lightly did they tread.

39. They did not know the reverence due your station -
The heaven's folk raised you on their shoulders sublime.

40. No foot rose but that the cherubim's treetops
Preceded it, so crowded with angels stood the sky.

41. Your bier it seemed an angel bore,
With hosts divine behind him thronging round.

42. They walked on, and the sky rained tears
That eyes shed streaming for you, unwearied.

43. When the eyes' waters met in a matter
That melted the angel of death's heart till it blazed!

44. Thus you were Noah, your coffin the ark, and the
Flood, a torrent of pouring tears, drowned all people.

45. Bearing you in knowledge? - they bore nothing
But valor, peril, and lofty aspiration!

46. Burying you in knowledge? - They buried nothing
But perfections, character, and qualities sublime!

47. Or casting the handful dust when they interred you -
That dust, by mouths, was kissed and hallowed.

48. As though your grave above the ground were a star of heaven,
Or as if in its soil a star of heaven dwelled.

49. O you who came where my voice cannot reach,
Though disasters press round it with their assemblies harsh,

50. And the caravan paused in a fearful waste
Made verdant by your open hand, not rain,

51. It called in yearning, "Take from me, travellers,
Souvenirs I am filled with from his glory's gleam!"

52. Stop by it, halt your rides, spill its blood,
Sprinkle it on his soil you lately watered with bounty.

53. I stood there as the dawn recited for it:
"Where is he who was sanctuary for the hunted?

54. Where is he who made the haunt shine with his smile
For visitors, dispelling the glooms from them?

55. He who built the towering mansion of glory
Whose pillar is the pride - its top is in the sky?

56. To whom all knotty points referred when
Reason was tried and his judgment loosened knots?"

57. And where is he whose bounty was not knit
When the hoary year frowned except by his smile?

58. And where is he whose wing of mercy sheltered
The healthy when his time never straitened?

59. When it came to lineage, no difference between
The furthest and the nearest in his mercy!"

60. And where is he who was as father to orphans
Through his righteousness, so even was his favor?

61. They knew no fathers but in his absence
They knew an orphanhood."

62. You loved concealing your work in God;
But it only increased, the more concealed.

63. Who would swear no sin ever stuck
To your righteousness was no perjurer or sinner.

64. I seek God's pardon if I compare your fingers' tips
To drops harmonizing with the roaring sea.

65. Yes, his brother portrayed him, and through him appeared
Traits from his father exposing the shining full moon.

66. Muhammad - it's enough that our age
Smiled from a beautiful sight of him.

67. When he appeared, glances smiled as if
He were the crescent of feast days, adorned.

68. From his sweet expression, if you wish, pluck pearls,
Or pick flowers, or cull wise sayings.

69. So implore for those nobles who died, and say,
"If not for loss, you would have been disgraced - so give thanks for rubble!"

70. Glory rose in the horizon of sublimity, a moon
O joy of meteors, would you might rise to serve it!

71. His efforts killed the efforts you made
Until, like you, they lay beneath the soil, decayed.

72. If Zuhair had seen him in his prime,
He'd have ransomed him, choosing ruin.

73. From an adorned palm not watered save by clouds,
And every branch, with water of noblesse, bloomed,

74. The rain vied with it, lightning testified for it, the gift of clouds,
Then water! See how the rain wets and adorns.

75. It challenged the moon with the sparkling of its crescents,
And made the bright pleiades judge.

76. Preach with the guiding star of sublimity in its rising -
Dispel the clouds of your sorrows and gloom!

77. And conclude with the trustee of brilliance a pact
On the most faithful of creatures in most faithful oaths sworn!

78. O family of glory, still you bind your family
Into a necklace around this age's throat arranged,

79. Patience, O wise ones! Wisdom is a stance
Even for those of you who never gained wisdom.

80. Your succor is Mustafa the nobles,
An excellent chieftain in whom the sublime came together.
