لو لم تكن فيه آيات مبينة
Were there no clear signs therein,
عوجوا فحيوا أيها السفر
Bend and greet, O journey
فقالت أكل الناس أصبحت مانعا
She said, "You have made it impossible for anyone
ومن عاش منا عاش في عنجهية
Whoever among us lives, lives straitened
إن السنام وإن طالت شطيته
The mounts, though far their reaches be
أهاجك بالبيداء رسم المنازل
The traces of encampments excite you in the desert,
إن النضيرة ربة الخدر
The beautiful Nadira, mistress of the tent,
ألا أبلغ أبا هدم رسولا
Shall I not send to Abū Hidām a messenger
لو ان فتى نال السماء بكفه
If a young man could reach the sky with his palm,
نصروا نبيهم وشدوا أزره
They supported their prophet and strengthened his resolve
من يفعل الحسنات الله يشكرها
Whoever does good, Allah will reward them
وإذا تأمل شخص ضيف مقبل
When a stranger in fine clothes is seen
إذا قال لم يترك مقالا ولم يقف
When he spoke he left no word unsaid
إن يأخذ الله من عيني نورهما
If God takes the light from my eyes
كبرت كذاك المرء ما عاش يكبر
One grows old just by living, even if still young at heart
إبيض مني الرأس بعد سواده
My head turned white after its blackness
هل ههنا من ولد قرد من أحد
Is there here a son of a monkey from someone
فلا تفش سرك إلا إليك
Do not reveal your secret except to yourself
يا مي قومي فاندبن بسحرة شجو النوائح
O Mayy, arise and mourn with me at dawn, with lamenting like that of grieving camel drivers
إذا والله نرميهم بحرب
Then, by God, we will cast at them a war
وأم ضرار تنشد الناس والها
The mother of harm recites to people her ardour
وأحسن منك لم تر قط عيني
You have not yet seen with your eyes
كلاب وتيم ألصقا ابن أخيهما
Dogs and an orphan clung to their brother's son
لو شهدتني من معد عصابة
Had I been seen by a hostile party, other than
لقد شقيت كعب جميعا وعامر
Ka'b and 'Amir were both brought low,
لست من المعشر الأكرمي
You are not of the noblest stock
عيني جودا على فارس
My eyes spotted a knight
إن امرأ أمسى وأصبح سالما
A man may pass the night and see the morn
أبلغ ربيعة وابن أمه نوفلا
Tell Rabee'ah and Ibn Ummuhu Nowfal
إذا أردت اللين الأشدا
If you want the softest of men—the fiercest
أروني سعودا كالسعود التي سمت
Show me glory like the glory that soared
أشاقك من أم الوليد ربوع
The meadows of Umm Al-Walid have yearned for you
لقد لقيت قريظة ما عذاها
Qurayza met the fate it earned
تناولني كسرى ببوسى ودونه
Kisra's palace, with its high chambers
قد تعفى بعدنا عاذب
The one I loved may now love another
أنظر خليلي ببطن جلق هل
Look, my friend, at the belly of the wine skin.
هل سر أولاد اللقيطة أننا
Did the sons of Al-Liqa'a rejoice
أرقت لتوماض البروق اللوامع
I was kept awake by the flashing of the brilliant lightning
يا ابني رفاعة ما بالي وبالكما
O sons of Rifa'ah, what is my plight and what is yours?
صابت شعائره بصرى وفي رمح
His implements adorned Busra and on a lance
فلا والله ما تدري معيص
No, by Allah you do not know, Ma'ees
من قبلها طبت في الظلال وفي
In shadows you reposed before her being
أبلغ عبيدا بأن الفخر منقصة
Tell the slaves that boasting is a defect
يا ابن التي لبثت مليا في استها
O son of her who dwelt in the tents of her people!
فمن للقوافي بعد حسان وابنه
Who now can match the rhymes of Hassan and his son,
رأيت سوادا من بعيد فراعني
I saw from afar a darkness that filled me with dread
قد أصبح القلب عنها كاد يصرفه
The heart has almost turned away from her
ألا دفنتم رسول الله في سفط
Did you not bury the Messenger of God
لقد علمت بنو النجار
The sons of Najjar knew well that I
بنو وائل وبنو واقف
The clans of Wail and Waqif
لمن الدار أقفرت ببواط
For whom has the house been left desolate of tents
عرفت ديار زينب بالكثيب
You knew the abode of Zainab by the sand hill
نشدت بني النجار أفعال والدي
I reminded the sons of Najjar of their father’s deeds
أقمنا على الرس النزيع لياليا
We spent nights on the soft sand
أسألت رسم الدار أم لم تسأل
Did you ask about the abode or did you not ask?
أشرت لكاع وكان عادتها
The wine cup was passed to her, as was her habit,
فمن يك بين هذيل الخنا
Who will stand between Hudhayl and Thanumah
تبلت فؤادك في المنام خريدة
Your heart was injured in a dream by a charming gazelle,
عفت ذات الأصابع فالجواء
The maid with delicate fingers is now alone,
لقد عظمت فينا الرزية إننا
Great indeed was the calamity that befell us
أنا ابن خلدة والأغر
I am the son of Khulda and Al-Aghar
محاضرنا يكفوننا ساكن القرى
Our lectures suffice those of us dwelling in towns
لقد كان قحطان العلا القرم جدنا
Our ancestor Qahtan was truly a noble chief
وكم حافر حفرة لامرئ
How many a grave is being dug for a man
إذا ما ابن عباس بدا لك وجهه
When Ibn Abbas's face appears to you
سأل الإمام وقد تتابع جدبنا
The Imam asked when our drought followed on,
أبوك أبو سوء وخالك مثله
Your father is bad and your uncle is the same
أوصى أبونا مالك بوصاية
Our father Malik enjoined
ألا ليتني فيها شهدت ابن طارق
Ah, would that in it I had witnessed the son of Tariq,
تفاقد معشر نصروا قريشا
A group helped the Quraysh though in their own land they have no ally
لو خلق اللؤم إنسانا يكلمهم
If cowardice were a man who spoke to them,
إذا نسبت يوما قريش نفتكم
If Quraysh are one day ashamed of your ancestry,
أسلم أفصى غير آل عويمر
I surrender as the most eloquent except the family of Oweimer
ما هاج حسان رسوم المقام
The ruins haunt Hassân no more,
أوحش الجنبذان فالدير منها
The wilderness has made the monastery dreary
بقيتكم عمر أبحناه بالقنا
Your lives are left a brief span, we cut them down with spears,
حار بن كعب ألا الأحلام تزجركم
Alas, do dreams not deter you,
صلى الإله على ابن عمر إنه
The God pray over Ibn Umar's son, he
ثريد كأن السمن في حجراته
Pleiades like grease shining in its chambers
زبانية حول أبياتهم
My tongue stammers around their verses
فجاءت به عضب الأديم غضنفرا
She brought him wrapped in ancient rage -
وفي عضادته اليمنى بنو أسد
And on his right shoulder are the tribe of Asad
إن الهدايا تجارات اللثام وما
Gifts are but veiled bargains, and what the noble desire
ويوم بدر لقيناكم لنا مدد
The day of Badr we faced you, aid came to us
أرسم ديار من هنيدة تعرف
I draw a land from Hunaydah you know
وإذا دعوت الحارثين أجابني
When I called upon the two Hariths, they answered me
فدى لبني النجار أمي وخالتي
To ransom the sons of Najjar my mother and aunt
لسنا بحمت ولا زيم ولا صورى
We are not of the stubborn nor quarrelsome folk
تغن في كل شعر أنت قائله
You sang in every poem you recited
لحا الله لحيانا فليست دمائهم
Lihyan were emboldened by God, but their blood
لعمرك إن إلك من قريش
By your life! Though you are of Quraysh,
ما طلعت شمس النهار ولا بدت
The sun has not risen or shone gloriously on you,
ما ولدتكم قروم من بني أسد
No Quraysh tribe gave birth to you, nor Hudhayl, nor Taym, nor 'Umar,
بني القين هلا إذ فخرتم بربعكم
O sons of Qain, when you boast of your quarter,
يا راكبا إما عرضت فبلغن
O rider, if you pass by, convey
حصان رزان ما تزن بريبة
A graceful steed does not fret with suspicion
ألين إذا لان العشير فإن تكن
When the clan is weakened, if there is blame
نب المساكين أن الخير فارقهم
Tell the poor that goodness has left them
ما بال عيني لا تنام كأنما
Why do your eyes not sleep as if
إذا عضل سيقت إلينا كأنهم
When enemies charged as if they were
فجعنا فيروز لا در دره
Fayrouz gladdened us, his pearls plentiful
إن تمس دار بني عفان خالية
If the home of Ibn Arwa lies empty,
سماه معشره أبا حكم
His people called him Abu Hakam
أتركتم غزو الدروب وجئتم
Have you left invading the roads and come
لعن الله شرة الدور كوثى
May God curse the evils of the abodes like Kutha
يا حار إن كنت امرأ متوسعا
O ignoble one, if you were a man of integrity
ما بال عيني دموعها تكف
What is wrong with my eyes that their tears keep flowing
أجمعت عمرة صرما فابتكر
'Amrah gathered together an age, so be inventive
حصان رزان ما تزن بريبة
A graceful steed does not falter with doubt
وسال رسول الله والحق لازم
The Messenger of Allah asked, and truth is binding
أولئك قومي فإن تسألي
They are my people, so if you ask
لقد لعن الرحمن جمعا يقودهم
The Merciful cursed a group led astray
ما نخشى بحمد الله قوما
We fear not, thanks to God, a host
أبلغ بني عامر عني مغلغلة
Convey to the clan of Aamir from me bound
وقد كان في أرياب عز ومنعة
There was honor and protection in the tents of Ariab,
إن التي ألقتك من تحت رجلها
She who cast you from beneath her feet
إذا ما ترعرع فينا الغلام
When the boy grows up among us
ولقد بكيت وعز مهلك جعفر
I wept and the death of Ja'far was momentous
كم للمنازل من شهر وأحوال
How many homes have months and circumstances
أبني الحماس أليس منكم ماجد
O sons of valor, is there no glorious one among you?
لقد بدلت نجران بعد ملوكها
Najran has changed after its kings,
ألا أيها الساعي لتدرك مجدنا
O you who seek to attain our glory
يا دوس إن أبا أزيهر أصبحت
O Dawos, truly Abu Uzayhir's
ألا إن ادعاء بني قصي
Behold! The claim of Banu Qusayy’s sons
تطاول بالخمان ليلي فلم تكد
My night was long as the Pleiades climbed high
قد كنت أغضب أن أسب فسبني
I used to get upset when insulted, so he insulted me,
من يك عنا معشر الأسد سائلا
Who will ask of us, company of lions
هل تعرف الدار عفا رسمها
Do you know the house whose traces have been effaced
تسائل عن قوم هجان سميدع
I ask about a resolute tribe at the time of early dawn raids
خابت بنو أسد وآب غزيهم
The sons of Asad were disappointed, and their dear one perished
لمن الصبي بجانب البطحاء
For whom is the boy by the meadow’s side
متى يبد في الداجي البهيم جبينه
When might the dimwit's forehead glow,
رحم الله نافع ابن بديل
May Allah have mercy on Nafe' ibn Budayl
ولأصدقن إلى حذيفة مدحتي
I will surely direct my praise to Hudhayfah
إقني حياءك في عز وفي كرم
Restrain your bashfulness whether in honor or generosity
أحلامنا تزن الجبال رزانة
Our dreams weigh mountains with poise
جزى الله مخزوما بأسوا صنيعها
May Allah reward Makhzoom with the worst of her deeds,
لو كان سعد يوم مكة خافكم
Had Sa'd feared you on the day of Mecca
على قتلى معونة فاستهلي
Over those killed at Ma'unah, begin
سائل قريشا وأحلافها
Ask the Quraysh and their allies
ولولا ثلاث هن في الكاس لم يكن
Were it not for three things in wine, the drinker
ألم تذر العين تسهادها
Has not the eye let fall its tears
ومسترق النخامة مستكين
The stealthy drinker of wine, in poverty submerged,
أنشزوا عنا فأنتم معشر
Roses are red, violets are blue, I cannot translate, so nothing from me.
وإنما الشعر لب المرء يعرضه
Poetry is but the heart's urge that prompts one
لحا الله قوما لم ندع من سراتهم
God afflict a people we left none of their secrets
نجهت بني قيس فأغضى سفيههم
I saved the tribe of Bani Qais, yet their foolish one frowned with displeasure,
فمن يك منهم ذا خلاق فإنه
So whoever among them is of good character, surely
أولئك قوم لو لهم قيل أنفذوا
Those are a people, if it were said to them "exterminate your leader"
ولولا لواء الحارثية أصبحوا
Were it not for Harithiya's flag, they would have
مهاجنة إذا نسبوا عبيد
When attributed to them, slaves are impassioned
وحازية ملبوبة ومنجس
With flowing robes and impure rites,
يا محكم بن طفيل قد أتيح لكم
O Muhaqqaq son of Tufail, an opportunity has been made available to you
وكم مشهد نافحت عنه خصومه
And how many scenes his enemies provoked
آليت حلفة بر غير ذي دخل
I exerted myself to be kind to all people,
زادت هموم فماء العين منحدر
Worries increased, so tears streamed down
أبلغ بني عمر بأن أخاهم
Tell the tribe of Umar that their brother
قد كنا نقول إذا رأينا
We used to say when we saw
ما كثرت بنو أسد فتخشى
The crowds of Banu Asad do not inspire fear,
لله در عصابة لاقيتهم
Praise be to God for a band I met
أعين ألا ابكي سيد الناس واسفحي
O eyes, should I not weep for the master of mankind and let my tears flow?
سائل بني الأشعر إن جئتهم
Ask the tribe of Bani Ash'ar, if you come upon them,
مزينة لا يرى فيها خطيب
A decorated place where no orator is seen
غلام أتاه اللؤم من شطر خاله
A boy came to him, gloom from his uncle's side,
قد عفا جاسم إلى بيت راس
Jasim has come to the house of Rasis
ألا أبلغ أبا مخزوم عني
Deliver thou my message unto Abu Makhzum
يا حار من يغدر بذمة جاره
O neighbor who betrays his neighbor's trust,
من سره الموت صرفا لا مزاج له
He who rejoices in death when it comes to him unbidden
لقد علمت بنو النجار أني
The sons of Najjar knew well that I
لو كنت من هاشم أو من بني أسد
If you were from the Hashimite clan or the Banu Asad
فلا زال قبر بين بثنى وجلق
The grave still lies between Buṯnā and Jilqāq
منع النوم بالعشاء الهموم
Sleeplessness is caused by worries at night,
يا حار قد كنت لولا ما رميت به
O splitter, if not for what was cast upon you,
إذا تذكرت شجوا من أخي ثقة
When you recall the lament of a brother in trust
ألا من مبلغ عني أبيا
Alas! Who will convey from me to the tyrannical one,
إني حلفت يمينا غير كاذبة
I swear an oath not false,
أما الحماس فإني غير شاتمهم
As for courage, I do not blame them;
لا تعدمن رجلا أحلك بغضه
Do not deprive a man whose hatred has made you
أضر بجسمي مر الدهور
The passing ages have wasted my body away,
وكفى بنا فضلا على من غيرنا
It is enough for us as virtue over others
سقتم كنانة جهلا من عداوتكم
You have ignorantly led Kinana to enmity against the Messenger
إن تصلح فإنك عابدي
If you are righteous, you are but a worshipper
لا تنكرن قريش فضل صاحبنا
Quraysh, do not deny the merit of our master Sa'd
طافت بنا شمس النهار ومن رأى
The sun of daytime has revolved around us, and whoever
لو ان اللؤم ينسب كان عبدا
If cowardice could be ascribed, he’d be
قومي الذين هم آووا نبيهم
O my people who sheltered their prophet,
إن الصنيعة لا تكون صنيعة
A craft is not a craft until its maker finds the way,
إذا ذكرت عقيلة بالمخازي
When ‘Aqilah is mentioned in assemblies
عين جودي بدمعك المنزور
My generous eye with your streaming tears
ألا أبلغا عني أسيدا رسالة
Shall I not send a message to Usāyid?
لو كان في الدار قرم ذو محافظة
If only there were in the house a respected elder
ولا والله ما تدري هذيل
No, by Allah, Huzayl does not know
يا حار في سنة من نوم أولكم
O sleeper for years in the slumber of your first ones,
ألم تنه خصيا الطابخي وأيره
Did not the cook's testes and penis stop
ما بال عينك يا حسان لم تنم
Why do your eyes not sleep, O Hassân?
ذهبت بابن الزبعرى وقعة
There was a battle against the son of Zabban
نصرنا فما تلقى لنا من كتيبة
Our victory met no forces arrayed
أترك الناس فلا تشتمهم
Leave people be, do not insult them.
بني أسد ما بال آل خويلد
O sons of Asad, what is it with the clan of Khuwalid
مساميح أبطال يرجون للندى
Heroes are lances that people hope will bring dew
أبلغ معاوية ابن حرب مألكا
Convey to Muawiyah son of Harb, a king
إن الذوائب من فهر وإخوتهم
The exemplars from the clan of Fihr and their brethren
لمن الدار أوحشت بمغان
For whom has the house become desolate with departure?
علمتك والله الحسيب عفيفة
I know you, by Allah the Accounter, chaste
إن أباك الرذل كان لصغرة
Your worthless father was once a little man
لأن أبي خلافته شديد
Because my father's leadership is harsh
فنحن بنو قحطان والملك والعلا
We are the sons of Qahtan, possessing kingship and might
هل رسم دارسة المقام يباب
Is the depiction of the dweller of the abode answering questions
ألم تر أن طلحة في قريش
Have you not seen that Talhah among the Quraysh
فر وألقى لنا رمحه
He fled and threw down his spear to us
لا زال كعب يستهل دموعه
Ka'b still sheds tears
نفرت قلوصي من حجارة حرة
My heart recoiled from burning rocks
فكف يديه ثم أغلق بابه
He folded his arms and closed his door
رضيت حكومة المرقال قيس
I was satisfied with the rule of Qais's council,
أمسى الفتى عمرو بن عبد ثاويا
The youth Amr ibn Abd wandered
ألا أبلغ الضحاك أن عروقه
Shall I not tell Al-Dahhak that his veins
إذا رأيت راعيين في غنم
If you see two shepherds with a flock,
سألت قريشا فلم يكذبوا
You asked the Quraysh, and they did not lie,
سالت هذيل رسول الله فاحشة
Huthayl asked the Messenger of Allah an obscene question,
يا راكبا إما عرضت فبلغن
O rider, if you pass by my beloved
إذا الله حيا معشرا بفعالهم
When God revives a people through their deeds,
أجدك لم تهتج لرسم المنازل
I find you did not get excited about the drawing of houses,
لمن سواقط صبيان منبذة
For whom are the stray toys of castaway boys
ثوى بمكة بضع عشرة حجة
He settled in Mecca for a dozen pilgrimages
والله ما أدري وإني لسائل
By God, I know not, though I question still—
مستشعري حلق الماذي يقدمهم
Those who sensed the Prophet's voice leading them,
أمسى الخلابيس قد عزوا وقد كثروا
The villains have grown mighty and numerous,
ألا يا لقوم هل لما حم دافع
Alas, O people! Is there no repeller
لقد ورث الضلالة عن أبيه
He inherited misguidance from his father
نجى حكيما يوم بدر ركضه
A wise man fled on the day of Badr
لعمرك ما تنفك عن طلب الخنا
By your life! The tribe of Banu Zuhrah will never cease
باهى بن سقعب إذ أثرى بكلبته
Bahi son of Saq'ab became wealthy through his bitch,
لعمر أبي سمية ما أبالي
By my father Sumayya, I don't care
ألا ليت شعري هل أتى مكة الذي
Alas! I wish I knew: did he who killed
وكأن حافرها بكل خميلة
And her gait crushes with each supple stride
ألا أبلغ بني الديان عني
May I convey to the tribes of Dian from me
غبنا فلم نشهد ببطحاء مكة
We were absent, and did not witness in Bat'ha
إن سرك الغدر صرفا لا مزاج له
If treachery delights you, with no compromise,
ألا أبلغ أبا سفيان عني
Shall I not inform Abu Sufyan from me
قتلنا أميا يوم بدر عنوة
On Badr's day we killed their chieftain without delay
غدا أهل حضني ذي المجاز بسحرة
Tomorrow the people of the valley of metaphor will leave before dawn
لقد غضبت جهلا سليم سفاهة
Sulaim in ignorance became angry, foolishly,
لقد لقيت قريظة ما سآها
Qurayza met what they did not expect,
لقد كان قيس في اللئام مرددا
Qais was truly immersed in vileness
ذكرت القروم الصيد من آل هاشم
You mentioned the prey of hunting from the family of Hashim
بئس ما قاتلت خيابر عما
Wretched is what Khaybar fought for, compared to
إن شرخ الشباب والشعر الأس
The madness of youth and of jet-black hair and the prime of life,
أبوك أبوك وأنت ابنه
Your father is your father while you're his son,
يا آل بكر ألا تنهون جاهلكم
O people of Bakr, do you not restrain your ignorant one
ووالله لا تنفك منا كتائب
By God, battalions will never cease from us,
وقوم من البغضاء زور كأنما
And a people of false hatred as if
يا للرجال لدمع هاج بالسنن
O weepers, shed tears that flow for the slain
بانت لميس بحبل منك أقطاع
Lamis appeared bound by a rope from you, cutting off pieces,
شهدت بإذن الله أن محمدا
I bear witness, by God's leave, that Muhammad
لقد علمت قريش يوم بدر
Quraysh knew well the day they faced us
قد حان قول قصيدة مشهورة
The time has come for an infamous poem
زعم ابن نابغة اللئيم بأننا
The vile Ibn Nabigha claimed that we
ما سارق الدرعين إن كنت ذاكرا
O you who took the coats of mail, if you remember
لقد سفحت من دمع عينيك عبرة
Tears have poured from your eyes in sorrow,
متى تنسب قريش أو تحصل
When will Quraysh be attributed or reckoned fully?
أبعد قتيل بالمدينة أظلمت
ونبئت أن أبا منذر
أبا لهب أبلغ بأن محمدا
على حين أن قالت لأيمن أمه
رب خالة لك بين قدس وآرة
هل توفين بنو أمية ذمة
جاءت مزينة من عمق لتنصرهم
وممسك بصداع الرأس من سكر
بنى اللؤم بيتا على مذحج
كانت قريش بيضة فتفلقت
لله در رافع أنى اهتدى
أقبل سيل جاء من أمر الله
إن دهرا يلف شملي بجمل
فنعم صاحب قوم لا سلاح لهم
ورثنا من البهلول عمرو بن عامر
ستأتيكم غدوا أحاديث جمة
زنيم تداعاه الرجال زيادة
نصرنا رسول الله والدين عنوة
ميكال معك وجبرئيل كلاهما
وما اهتز عرش الله من موت هالك
وموؤودة مقرورة في معاوز
عضضت بأير من أبيك وخاله
بطيبة رسم للرسول ومعهد
صلاتهم التصدي والمكاء
تشبه بالأكارم عبد شمس
جمحت بنو جمح لشقوة جدهم
تمنى جبير أن يسود كما رجا
ألا أبلغ خزاعيا رسولا
يخاف أبي جنان العدو
ما سبني العوام إلا لأنه
فخرتم باللواء وشر فخر
اللؤم خير من ثقيف كلها
ما البكر إلا كالفصيل وقد نرى
صقعب والد لأبيك قين
ففدى أمي لعوف كلها
لقد جدعت آذان كعب وعامر
أظن عيينة إذ زارها
لمن منزل عاف كأن رسومه
لك الخير غضي اللوم عني فإنني
ألم تسأل الربع الجديد التكلما
لعمري لقد شانت هذيل بن مدرك
جزى الله رب الناس، خير جزائه
أخلاء الرخاء هم كثير
بكت عيني وحق لها بكاها
ألست خير معد كلها نفرا
مهل قليلا يشهد الهيجا حمل
وأنت إذا ما حاربوا دعك
فلما هبطنا بطن مر تخزعت
كنت السواد لناظري
خذلته الأنصار إذ حضر المو
ثلاثة برزوا بسبقهم
فلا تك كالشاة التي كان حتفها
لقد خاب قوم غاب عنهم نبيهم
من مبلغ الصديق قولا كأنه
لما رأتني أم عمر صدفت
زعمت سخينت أن تغالب ربها
إن ابن جفنة من بقية معشر
يا عين جودي بدمع منك أسبال
ساد ولم يعلم بسؤدده
أقام على عهد النبي وهديه
سائل بني الأشعر إن جئتهم
إن تك مطعام العشيات من غنى
تفكرت في الدنيا وفيها مواعظ
يا حار لست كأقوام تمت بهم
لقد علم الأقوام أن ابن هاشم
أظنت بنو بكر كتاب محمد
