1. He who rejoices in death when it comes to him unbidden
Should come to fight at Uthman's house.

2. They wear the callus of prostration proudly on their foreheads,
While they recite the Qur'an and chant praises all night long.

3. I wish I knew—would that a bird might tell me!—
What passed between Ali and Uthman's son.

4. Soon you shall hear in your own lands
"God is most great!"—O Avengers of Uthman!

5. I am content with the Syrian troops
And the Commander and the brethren as brethren.

6. I am one of them, whether absent or present,
Until death, though I was not called Hassaan.

7. Woe, oh my life I'd ransom you, mother who bore me!
Patience may avail when the hated thing comes.

8. Gird the swords about your waists
Until death comes to him whose time is due.

9. Perhaps you may one day see with joy
God's Caliph among you, as he once was.
