O master who travels
لعدل إله العرش أشكو ظلامتي
To the justice of God, Lord of the Throne, I complain of my darkness
أفدي الذي وافى إلي بباقة
I sacrifice myself for the one who brought me
حمى ورد الرضاب العذب كي لا
The sweet wild rose fever, lest
وافى بشير النصر
brings the good news
سقى الغيث قبرا حله من ذوي الهدى
The rain watered a grave, made pure by guidance's folk,
أرجى الوسائل طه أكرم الرسل
I beseech the best of messengers, Taha, the most generous of prophets
سؤال سوى مليك الأمر شرك
Asking other than the King of kings is partnering
هذا كتاب في الحساب لقد حوى
This book on arithmetic has encompassed
هنيئا لعبد الباسط الفاضل الذي
Blessed is the generous servant Abdel Basset, whom
حتام يمنع جفني هجرك الوسنا
Your estrangement prevents my eyelids from closing
زفت على بدر العلى الأفراح
Joy was brought to the full moon at dawn
وفى لنا الدهر إسعادا بما وعدا
Time has fulfilled our happiness with what it promised
روحي فدى القرشي أكرم سيد
My soul I sacrifice for the Qurayshi, the noblest master
من لصب صبا المعاهد أشجاه
For one whose youth poured treaties as sapling trees
قضى تذكار أبكار الليالي
The recollection of the virginal nights has passed,
قال لي المحبوب يوما
The beloved once said to me,
الملك لله من شاء الإله به
The kingdom is God's; whom God wills
بلغا عني ربوع الصالحيه
Deliver on my behalf to the virtuous meadows
يا راحلين بقلبي والنهى أفلا
O my companions, though we parted, don't you see
مؤدب الأطفال أهدى امرئ
The teacher of children gifted a man
إن كان ردفك على عادل قوامك جار
If your companion is just, keep him as a neighbor
حمدا لك اللهم يا من قد قضى
Praise be to You, O Allah, O You Who has decreed

مطالع سعد قد تجلت كواكبه
The auspicious stars of Sa'd have risen
مستهام رق وانتحبا
He who seeks beauty's affection unreturned
يا للهوى من لصب لم ينل أربا
O love, for one smitten with passion unquenched
انحل الجسم يا هذيم الغرام
The body wastes away, O you who pine for love
قضت ببعادي ربة التيه والعجب
The mistress of loss and wonder decreed my removal
إذا حزت مجدا شامخا فاتخذ له
If you gain lofty glory, take for it
يا روضة الأدب التي فيها الأرب
O garden of literature in which Arab nobility reside
بدا لنا الخال في وردي وجنته
The cheek's green mole in his rosy garden appeared
طريفا كان مجدك أم تليدا
Whether your glory was new or long-standing
أما والهوى لولا الألى نزلوا السفحا
Were it not for the torment of love, they would not have descended the slopes
أصاحي ما لطير العز صاحا
Why does the bird of glory cry out?
حيا الندامى بشمس الراح مصطبحا
The repentant were revived by the rising sun,
رياض الهنا باليمن فاحت ورودها
The gardens of bliss in Yemen have blossomed
السعد أصبح كاملا بمحمد
Happiness is now complete with Muhammad,
سبحان من أنشأ بان القدود
Glorified is He Who originated the curtains of modesty,
قالوا اغترب في طلاب الرزق قلت لهم
They said, "Emigrate in seeking provision." I said to them
عذرت في حب أسماء العذول فما
I made excuses for loving Asma the coy, so what
رأى المحبوب في جفني كحلا
He saw the beloved in my eyes as kohl
الجهل أسوء ما مات الشقي به
Ignorance is the worst thing the wretched die of
هواك بفاتر الأجفان زنه
His love enslaves my heavy eyelids
علام فدتك النفس تجفو وتهجر
Why does my soul sacrifice itself for you though you spurn and abandon it?
تقارن النيران الشمس والقمر
The sun and moon are compared to fires
قد أتعب الدهر قوى همتي
Roses are red, violets are blue
أرى الإنسان ما بلغ المعالي
I see man has not reached glory
خسيس لا يشابهه خسيس
A despicable man, no despicable man resembles him,

A tale of wisdom gathered arts,
نصال الحادثات لهن فتك
The swords of events, their blows
إلهي بما أسبغت من فيض نعمة
My God, with the abundant grace
أديمي وصالي وامزجي باللمى كأسي
My hand is stretched out in yearning, and I mix my cup with tears
دع السفلاء واختر ذا وفاء
Leave the lowly and choose one faithful
أعد ذكر ربع البان سفحا وأجرعا
I yearn for the dwellings of Banu Lihyan on the slopes and meadows
يا عصبة الود كونوا في مودتكم
Brothers of affection, be in your affection
الشمس غابت ببرج الثور واحتجبت
The sun set in Taurus' sign and was veiled
ما احتمل العقل على بأسه
The mind cannot bear its torment
يا صاح إن جمال المرء ليس سوى
O companion, verily a man's beauty is naught but
أتى عارف بالظلم للشام مرة
A knowledgeable one came to Damascus once in darkness
أما وبسام المحيا الطلق
With a radiant smile that shines
زجرت بحرا طمى عزا بساحة من

أدار سلاف الراح من سلسبيله
The breeze turned the drink from his pure spring
ما ترى البدر حين حاز كماله

تبا لشيشة تنباك ولعت بها

يا رزق ما مثلك من أَغيد
O livelihood, none can compare to you
أنسايم الأحباب من روض الحمى
The breezes of loved ones from the meadow of ambition
صبح أفراح الملا قد أسفرا
The morning of the Master's joys has dawned
فؤاد على حفظ الوداد مقيم
A heart steadfast in friendship’s preservation
وتذكرت عهد الهوى
I remember the era of passion
هناء بالسلامة مستديم
Continuous joy and well-being
لقد أودى الفراق بقلب صب
Separation has surely destroyed a steadfast heart
زفاف بالسرور وبالتهاني
A wedding with joy and congratulations
ولما أتينا للمغيرية التي
And when we came to Mughairiyah, which
بتزاحم الأقدام في طلب المنى
Amidst the throng of feet in quest of wishes
أدر راح الصفا ولك الأمان
The breeze of al-Safa blew, and you are safe
خذي من ودادي العين يا قرة العين
Take from my love, O apple of my eye

منازل الجهال في عصرنا

من لعين اروقة لا تنام

لنا ليلة بالسعد آياتها بدت
A night has come to us, and its signs appear to be auspicious
جانب معاشرة الملوك لزينة
The company of kings is for adornment
لا تحكموا بقصاص من شرب الطا

ليهن ورق الحمى في الأيك تغريد
Why does the foliage of the fever-trees twitter in the groves?
تسلى بالمدام فؤاد قوم
The heart of a people found solace in wine
تصاحى نديم الحان من نشوة السكر
The companion woke from the intoxication of wine
قل لخليلي يا خلي الهوى
Tell my beloved, O kindest of all
يا ملجأ والكل تحت لوائه
O refuge, and all are under your banner
قم بالتهاني أيا نديم
Rejoice, my friend, and fill the cups with old wine,
ألا لله عاقبة الأمور
Lo! God's will govern things alway
يا لابسا ثوب المذمة لقطة
Oh you who wears the garment of blame as a patch
تبارك من له الألطاف دوما
Blessed is He who has kindness everlasting
يا مفردا بين أرباب المروءة في
O you who stand alone among the noble in
يا من رماه زمانه بعنائه
O you who his time has afflicted with its troubles

ويح قلبي كم يقاسي شجنا

زن بالفضائل مجد جدك
Adorn yourself with the virtues of your ancestors,
صلوا حبل ودي يا كرام وزوروا
Connect the rope of affection, O honorable people, and visit,
ظبي كحيل الجفون بالوسن
A gazelle-eyed one with eyelids like Indian musk
يا سر الوجود
O secret of existence
ما للمتيم حائما حول الحمى
Why does the lover roam around the abode,
يا من تنزه عن إبن ووالدة
O You who transcends having a son or daughter
بالمحيا حييني
Greet me with a smile
يا سقى عهدي وسكان الغضا
O you who tended to my covenant and the dwellers of meadows,
يا مشير الدولة العليا ومن
O counselor of the sublime state and he
تجنب عن معاشرة السفيه
Avoid the company of fools
صاح غي الهوى أثار الجوى بي
The passion's confidant has stirred my love
حبائل البر في استعطاف ذي الهيف
The cords of innocence in appeasing the stern
سعيد قارنته شمس سعد
Blessed is he whose sun is Saad's sun
ألا يا رشيد الإسم والفعل والحجا
O Rashid, blessed with name, deed, and pilgrimage
تعز ولا تكثر من النوح إنني
Be patient, do not excessively mourn, for I
أيا حسن حمام حوى الحسن والبها
O beauty of a bathroom that contains beauty and splendor
نصحت أولي الغباوة فاسترابوا
The foolish rejected my counsel and so misjudged me;
توسلت للرحمن أدعو بعبده
I implored the Merciful, calling upon His servant,
لاح العذار فخلت ليلة قدره
The full moon of his beauty shone, and the night of destiny arrived,
بليت بأزرق العينين أحوى
I am smitten with eyes of blue, the longing is sweet agony
دعينا من بعادك أو عدينا
Whether you call us from afar or bring us near
يا لائمي بهوى الذي في ذاته
O you who blame me for the love that dazzled
ألام بحبه فأزيد وجدا
My love for him increases my passion
يا سميري في السرى عرجا بي
O my companion in captivity, come visit me
خذ في هوى الغيد عني أحسن الخبر
Take good tidings from me about the beloved,
خلياني وصبوتي وشجوني

هيجت أشجان صب للربوع هفا

أفدي الذي إذ سألت عنه
The one I ransom when asked of him
غيث أفراح الملا قد وكفا
The rain of joys for the king has stopped
خليلي لا تذكر أخاك بريبة
My friend do not suspect your brother
هوانا هوى الغيد الحسان بلا مرا
My love for the tender gazelle is without blame
بشرى مشير المجد بدر العلى
Good tidings, counselor of glory, full moon of nobility
قل للفتى المعصراني ليس يحسن في
Tell the young man from Ma’asiran that there is no good
عطفا على مستهام رق وانتحبا
O passion, what a persistent love whose ardour was never quenched,
يا للهوى من لصب لم ينل وطرا
O passion, what an unrelenting tormentor
عاني المها مستهل الدمع هاطله
O love, who has tasted passion unrequited?
لولا البشائر في لقا الأحباب
Without the good tidings of meeting loved ones,
أترع الأكواب من صافي الشراب
I quaff the cups with the drafts so pure
أتى وفي يده نار فقال لنا
He came with fire in his hand and said to us
إلهي بتقديس النفوس الذكية
O my God, by sanctifying keen souls
يا شمس أنس عيوني لو تشاهدها

رب فتى ناولته شيشة
Many a youth handed a pipe,
بعين الشمس قد جلس الشيوخ
The elders sat in the sun's eye
بني خالد ما في بني الدهر خالد

وجاهل يدعي نظم القريض ولا
A fool claims to compose poetry, yet doesn't know

They taunt me for my silence, not knowing
قبلت منية قلبي فانثنت خجلا
I kissed Muniya my heart's desire, she bent abashed
عجبت لصياد على البحر لم تزل
I wondered at a fisherman in the sea continuously
حلي العذار الغوالي
My sweet, pure love
صل ما استطعت على أغر محجل
Connect with the one veiled in beauty as much as you can,
شكا ثقل الذنوب لنا ثقيل
He complained of the heaviness of sins upon us, so burdensome
لست بتزيينك مستقبح الص
I do not disfigure your image among people
قالوا اركب البحر لنيل المنى
They said, "Set sail upon the sea to attain your wishes"
لا تذكرن بسوء من نظرت به
Do not speak ill of one you gazed upon
أظباء رامة بالظبى آرامها
The gazelles of Ramah peacefully graze
دع الأجفان تسلب منك جسما
Let your eyelids steal from you a body
أنسمة فاحت بنشر الخزام
A breeze blew, spreading the aroma of flowers,
أخو المجد باذل إحسانه
The brother of glory, spending his kindness,
يا حسن بهجة روضة الأدب التي
O beauty of literature's garden that is
نجلا بني البربير والفرقدان
Two shining stars of the Arabs and Persians
وأغيد معسول الرضاب رجوته
I yearn for the honeyed nectar of his lips,
حسن الوجه والشمائل يمم
The beauty of his face and character designated him
يا من بفن الأحاجي
O you whose excellence at riddles
أفدي غزال الحمى
I sacrifice the gazelle of longing
بدر الدجا راح يجلو كاس شمس الراح
The full moon of Dujaila went away to polish the glass of the sun's wine
ما للحواسد بحب الظبي تهذي بي
What ails the enviers with my love for the gazelle that fascinates me
اعمل بدنياك واحذر من عواقبها
Do as you will in this world but beware the consequences,
قيل لي لم تركت نظم القوافي
I was asked, "Why did you abandon composing poetry with rhyme
وافى وقد لعب النسيم بردنه
He came while the breeze played with his softness,
شيئان أثارا لوعة الأحزان
Two things stirred the pangs of sorrow -
أما وليل عذاريه وما وسقا
By night's passion, by morning's drink,
إن العطاء عطاء الله جاد به
The gift is God's gift, with which He is generous
يا أيها الغصن انعطف نحونا
O you, the bending branch, turn towards us,
يطارحني هذا الزمان بهمه
This time treats me carelessly as though
وفاتنة من الغيد الغواني
A beauty, from the slender, flexible branches,
أقل عثرة العالين ترق ذرى العلى
Lessen the stumble of the exalted, and ascend the highest peak
ما فاح طيب شذا صبا نجد
No scent of gentle breeze has spread in Najd,
تحت الغلائل بانة تترنح
Under the locks of hair a gazelle sways
منهل العشاق مورود
The lovers' spring is flowing,
فدى لك ذا العبد مع ما ملك
For you, this servant and all he owns are ransomed
إذا هبت صبا الأسحار فاذكر
When the morning breeze blows, remember
أرى الدهر بالإقبال جادت يمينه
I see fate smiling upon him,
عواقب محنة الإنسان خير
The consequences of man's tribulation are good,
يا ربة الخدر
O mistress of intoxication
كتم الهوى جلدي فليس بذائع
My restraint concealed my passion, so it was not spread
يا كاشفا سر الرمو
O revealer of concealed mysteries
بالله يا ذات الخال
By Allah, O you of beauty
لو كان بدري بحالي في هواه داري
If my full moon was in the state of my love in its passion for my home
على حكم الهوى أدر المداما
Turn the wine round in circles, and blame not the bending of inclination,
بدا وسقاة الراح تجلى بدورها
The butlers of comfort have appeared in their abodes
يا عاذلي ليه بترك الحب تغري بي
O reproacher, why do you spurn love and tempt me,
يا آل بيت الشرف
O House of nobility
وبارد يحتد منا حمقا
He foolishly contends with us in anger
لي في الحمى خل خلا عن نية
I have a friend who feigned affection
أحبة قلبي والمنى طوع أمركم
O beloveds of my heart, my wish is at your command
أرى ما كل من يدعى حبيبا
I see not everyone who claims "love"
أتى في بشرف فرأيت شخصا
He came with good news, so I saw a man
ألا يا قادما بالخير يسعى
O you who comes seeking goodness,
انظر مناقب فرقدي فلك التقى
Look at the virtues of Farqadi's heaven, abode of piety,
لك الحمد يا مستوجب الحمد والثنا
You deserve all praise, O You Who merits all praise and thanks!
يا طالبا نيل السعادة والمنى
O seeker of happiness and wishes fulfilled
من لصب لم ينل أربا
He whose love did not reach the one he desired
وطرف رد عنه الطرف لما
A glance averted when the dawn did gleam,
قصاص مضر الناس عندي مقدم
Punishing the harm of people takes precedence for me
الحمد لله أَتم الحمد
Praise be to Allah, perfect praise
أيا صبح أفراح الملا عمك السعد
O dawn of the King's joy, you are enveloped with bliss,
لا تعتب الوغد اللئيم إذا أسا
Do not blame the despicable scoundrel when he does wrong,
دعوني بين ندمان وساقي
Let me be between repentance and a cupbearer
طالع البشرى لنا قد بشرا
Good tidings have come to us, so rejoice,
أسفا على بيت القري
Alas for the house of Kari
ساقي المدام غن غن
O bearer of wine, sing sing
بدت غراء كالقمر التمام
She appeared white like the full moon
يا أميرا حاز غايات العلى

كم ليلة ناجيت من أحببته
How many nights have I confided in the one I loved
سيدي ما قد مننت به

يا سادة بمديحهم حزت العلا
O masters, by praising them I gained elevation
مر الجميل قلت يا غصن النقا ما لك
The beautiful one passed, I said: "O branch of nāqā, what is wrong with you?
جازى الإله حواسدي بفعالهم
May God requite my enviers for their deeds,
بلينا من الدنيا بصحبة كاتب
We suffered in life with the company of a writer
من ولي الأحكام بين الورى
The one who judges mankind
سحقا لقهوة من أمسى يجود لنا
Alas for the coffee of one who in the evening is generous to us
بدر تبارك باري الخلق مبدعه
The full moon blessed the Creator of existence, its Originator
قيل لي ما لعصبة
They said what of a people
يا منيتي يا غالي السوم
O my wish, O precious intimate
رد الجدول الصافي الذي ضم أبحرا
Return the clear table that contained seas,
زال العنا بتباشير المنى ومضى
The hardships have departed with the signs of wishes, and passed away,
قل لوحيد العصر سامي الفخار
Tell the one alone in this era, exalted and refined
خلا الفضل من بيت القريض فمن غدا
The grace departed from Quraysh's abode, so he who tomorrow
يا صاح لا تذكر زمانا قد مضى
O friend, do not mention a past time
يا للأماجد هل يقاس لديكم
Oh glories, is there one among you
ألا هل لقلب عنك قد فقد الصبرا
Alas! Does my heart not grieve for you, having lost all patience?
مدح بني الأيام لي شغل
Praising them is my daily occupation
حوراء سرب اللوى
Maiden of the gazelle herd
أهوى رشا إن مشى أزرى غصون البان
I love when Rasha walks, her swaying branches oppress my heart
تعس الهلال القهوجي لأنه
Woe to this crescent moon of bent stature
راح ساقي الراح يجلو القدحا
The cupbearer went to quench thirst with the cup,
هنأت إسحاق بالإقبال حين أتى
I congratulated Isaac when he returned
إذا ما جئت مجلس روض أنس
When you come to a garden of intimacy
أشاقك صوت غنا الأورق
The voice of your singing enchanted the meadows
يا أخا الرشا والغزلان

ولما ضاقت الأسباب فينا

ومهفهف سلب العقول بحسنه

عار على مثلي سماع نصيحة
في المغيرية الردئية قوم
المجد كبر بالسرور وهللا
لله در الحبيب بالوعد ما أوفاه

أحيي زروة المشتى الملوكي

عليك بالسعي في نيل المراد ولذ

رأيت أقيرعا في الرأس منه
وافت تتيه فما رنت لك جذرا
عذيري بمن قد لامني وهو مالك
بقدر النهى بين الورى يشرف القدر
شجن تحار بدرك غايته الورى
أكثر الناس ضجة
أشبه بالكواكب كل خود
شمسان في فلك الجمال تقارنا
مرت بنا بيضاء أعطافها
ته دلالا أيها القمر
قم بنا أيها الحبيب
يا من بحل الأحاجي
يا من بكل دقيق
يا أيها القمر المضيء بمنزلي
وإذا رأيت من اللئام مؤخرا
يا جنة حار لبي في محاسنها
يا ظبي أنس قاهري بالنوى
جلت لنا هذه الآداب والصور
يد اليسر كم نبت من العسر قد زوت
رغبت عن الدنيا وزخرف أهلها
وقائلة ما لي أرى الناس أصبحت
قل لي سمي أمير المؤمنين لما
بروحي جميلا أبدل الشين عامدا
ذكر المعاهد والوقوف على الصفا
نظف القلب من الشك ولا
ما راح بدر المعالي يمتطي الفلكا
قلت يوما لزائر فيه ساءت
مدحي خسيس الأصل لي مثلة
قالوا فلان غليظ الجسم ذو ثقل
بروحي فتاة الحي من أنا في الملا
سلام على تلك المعاهد والحمى
أرى البحر والبر الفسيح تلاقيا
وبائع بعت روحي في محبته
لا تحسبوا الجاهل من جهله
ولقد نظرت دمي على خد الذي
أشرقت تتلو الهنا شمس التهاني
نداماي هيا بي إلى الروضة الغنا
خطبتك بعلا للزواج إمارة
أدي الرسالة يا ريح الحجاز لنا
نح يا حمام وصوح أيها البان
صبرا وإلا فماذا ينفع الحزن
لقد كرم المولى بني آدم على
بروحي من قد حل في القلب ساكنا
أدم شرب الأتاي فإن فيها
بشرى مليك المؤمنين
يا سرورا على القلوب تجلى
خذ حل إشكال أشكال أشرت لها
حمدا لمن جعل التاريخ عقد حلى
إذ زرت من يستثقلوا منك جانبا
يا غنيا بالحسن إني فقير
في طالع السعود
يا بدر يا للي مليك الحسن أوصا بك
ساقي الطلا ما رأت عيني نظير وساق
