1. With the conquest, joy dawned upon us heralding good news,
And fortune stood exulting and glorifying,

2. And victory and triumph whose might is immortalized
Raised its banners amongst mankind.

3. And the suns of the spheres of felicity shone,
And the morn of divine care dawned radiant.

4. And from the minds the illusions disappeared,
And the heedless woke from the slumber of apathy.

5. And tidings of joy came to the assembly,
As the garden of glory became verdant.

6. Good tidings of the most auspicious victorious king,
Who, were he to shake a dry branch, would make it fruitful,

7. Our exalted sultan, atop the sphere of sublimity,
Abdülmecid, the unique, the lofty, the elite,

8. And God granted him glories as He made him eminent with mighty glory.
O opener of the new conquest, and owner of the auspicious kingdom, aided and victorious,

9. And clother of the commendable with probity,
And guider of sound opinion with insight.

10. Your pearl of a king whose clemency encompassed the world, beyond doubt or demur,
The minaret of mighty glory stands with his sword erect,

11. Until he prevailed over the enemy and became dominant.
And providence assisted his destiny,

12. And God facilitated his desires.
So make his felicity and aid endure, O You whose generosity is beyond measure,

13. And cast over him the shade of Your might which has always been his shield and pardon,
And with utter sincerity, strive to favor the men of his state so its pillars grow firm,

14. Especially the governor of our province, whom the splendid years have adorned,
I mean, the companion of fortune, Mahmud Pasha, among the notables with merits that none can deny,

15. If I say he is like the famed scholar among mankind,
His merits were more precious and renowned,

16. And if he contained all pride, yet he is the cub of the noble and deserves to take pride,
A resolve that when mentioned in the assembly of lords,

17. Humbled them, and the eminent speaker became fragrant,
And traits from the essence of his pure nature,

18. A spring whose perfection burst forth,
And the clarity of manners whose purity,

19. None ever muddied at its springs,
And the radiance of a face that if it appeared to you in darkness

20. You would behold the dawn bursting forth,
And the generosity of a hand that if destitution befell you

21. You would witness from it copious fresh water for your rose garden,
And the soundness of an opinion whose circumspection decides for him

22. Perplexing matters without contemplating,
And indeed I repeat his praise delightedly,

23. For honey is best when reiterated,
Valor is his nature for doing good, it is praised,

24. And for benevolence it was a source,
His feats captivated souls, so they became devoted to him,

25. Refusing to be freed,
And his traits captivated hearts' love,

26. So it manifested, and was latent in the conscience,
Joy unto you, O wise advisor, for God has favored you,

27. So rejoice in it and take glad tidings,
The tidings of fortune arrived, and how excellent are those delegations,

28. Our praises are their neighbors,
God's gift is the victorious army, how much glory among the people and pride it attained,

29. Its horsemen ripped their enemies apart as the lions of valor ripped gazelles,
All intrepid, fearing no audacity and fearing the disgrace of retreating,

30. And its fierce lions crushing skulls aflame,
Roaring hotly and prancing proudly,

31. And its stalwarts offering up souls cheaply on the day of thrusting when passions intensified,
Death is more coveted by them than living disgraced among the people,

32. And its biting blades hot with warring, whetting,
Are dearer to it than embracing an ignoble wretch,

33. And the eggs of starlings mixed up are dearer to it
Than stirring the sides of the brown lionesses,

34. And the smoke of the gunpowder of battle is more vital to it
Than perfume of ambergris wafting from censers,

35. The day it confounded darkness with its light
And its light with its darkness was the strangest sight,

36. As if the sounds of the cannons in the darkness
Were lightning whose flashes thundered a pouring rain,

37. And the clashing of arms dyed with blood
Were like the tinkling of bejeweled anklets,

38. And in pursuing the horses the falconry
Tied its jesses upon them in flocks,

39. And the war pigeons built next to the vultures
A canopy that prevented their suns from rising,

40. If you wish to attain honor, then set out early for battle
And rise up with your sleeves rolled,

41. I see esteemed glory attained in a market
Where souls are sold and bought.

42. Do you not see that there is nothing above the dust except glories for the dust?
A man's honor is the speech of his enemy, saying

43. "I see such resoluteness in so-and-so."
And it suffices him disgrace that his friend says

44. "Zayd was deficient in battles."
We have praised striving to attain the sublime,

45. And at dawn the band will praise the hidden.
By God's aid we were saddened as we wished,

46. As that was decreed in the Book.
So victory exulted with felicity nearing,

47. And its opposite turned away in misery departing.
By the conquest of Sevastopol we attained our wishes,

48. Until the voice of joy ascended the pulpit,
And the herald came with glad tidings dated with
