1. Let me be between repentance and a cupbearer
My resurrection takes place through the unveiling of the shin

2. Leave me, and passionate love has set my heart aflame
I experience from my yearnings that which I experience

3. Leave me be, if I enter the meadows of intimacy
I release my bound mind from its shackles

4. A female announcer sang to me melodiously
"To whom do you come for shade like a portico?"

5. So I said to her, "O sister of Najd
Is it out of affection or separation that you wail?"

6. Both of us in the meadows are comrades in yearning
And in sorrows, longing, and craving

7. Stop at the bank of tears, solace and ecstasy
Equal between one offering drink and partaking

8. That you may steal and I pilfer wishes
So woe to your stealing and my pilfering

9. I stayed up as a gazelle stained my cheek
With the witnesses of my blood, dripping

10. He toys with me so I hope for intimacy
But I find him keeping his distance from me

11. I almost say, O oft-repeating coyness
When I say, O sweetest taste

12. With your aloofness, stop blaming an aloof one
For he mixed advice with hypocrisy

13. And perhaps an erring piece of advice was
Sharper than a well-honed blade

14. With my soul I surrendered my soul to one
Who exchanged it for bliss with misery

15. Had the steeds of his passion galloped in my heart
They would have burned, while my heart was atop an excellent steed

16. Oh branch, why have you turned away from me
After affection split the staff of discord?

17. I ransom you, you are the full moon but
I am the one singled out for misfortune

18. O you who the messenger of glances sent
My heart shot with the miracle of splitting

19. With the tear of an eye that knows no peace
And a lip that finds no friend among people

20. Whenever I conceal my love for you I find my tears expose
The ambiguities of the subtle secret

21. I will make my tradition my cup and my companion
Mentioning you in my mornings and evenings

22. Oh company who emerged and were
Like aligning stars in coordination

23. Stop and compete to plunder the pleasures
And leave no pleasure among them remaining

24. Take refuge in playfulness and merriment
According to the measure of licentiousness in agreement

25. And lean wherever the slender waists lean
Like the bending of a nimble fawn

26. And do not neglect a delicate waist
And make embracing necks your sin

27. For our gathering of intimacy is yours, greetings
While we are ferocious lions in our layers

28. In it are generous souls, each valorous
Abstaining from immorality in passion

29. Joys ascended with the excellence of Ali
And we spent time in harmony

30. Call him Iraqi, and we have not seen
Anyone rival him in Syria or Iraq

31. If he heads to Hejaz, he travels to Egypt
You see lovers heading to Iraq

32. Passion drives her to him, fervently
And she recalls the day of their agreement to depart

33. He came to Beirut so it rejoiced
Meeting with him and shaking hands

34. Sometimes he brings every heart to life
With the fires of playfulness blazing

35. And he sings, so how many souls did he give joy
And he composes, so how many tears fell

36. A young man who did away with worries through every art
His memory remains forever beautiful

37. Without a tune, his melodies moved
Cups around which a cupbearer circled

38. A flirtatious singer that charmed my heart
So I returned to passion, difficult to relinquish

39. He quenched Damietta’s thirst, and it
Smiled and contained the sweetest taste

40. It reached glory with Al-Alusi the Master
And surpassed in advancement and ascent

41. Through him its lofty homes became
Like necklaces in their rising

42. A resolute man who never neglected
The burdens of the sublime beyond ability

43. Good-natured with a friend, he has solidarity
Like the rain's lightning in its solidarity

44. Like the Hamada clan who reached greatness
And it embraced them in an embrace

45. They exceeded the debt of loftiness generously
And their praise is guaranteed by us

46. Men whom none can be measured against
So do not measure seas by cupbearers

47. No wonder they preceded in virtue
For precedence is among the traits of the noble

48. Their homes are the rise of high ambition
May God protect them, for He is the best protector

49. In them is the shining moon, Abu Khalil
Surrounded by celestial bodies from his comrades

50. They hastened to him out of love
As if their hearts were steeds racing

51. And they circled around his protectorate, a house of virtue
Containing the essence of perfection without pretense

52. A station of arrival, sublime in ascension
Through the breeze of the All-Powerful and Lofty

53. A generous man, attained precedence in generosity
And fell short of him, unable to reach him

54. He is humble, eminent in dignity and forbearance
Perfect in generosity and integrity

55. Through the breaths of his sanctity, souls come alive
When they burst open upon contact

56. You see him through the overflowing of divine lights
Disappearing like one drinking the mind-blowing cup

57. Disappearing with the witnesses in intense rapture
As he meets his beloved in encounter

58. Can an intimate friend be without his friend
Without a secret between them and an embrace?

59. Brides from the inner sanctums of the unseen
Were sent to him without dowry or marriage payment

60. For God’s grace is not through exerted effort
Or attained by race and pursuit

61. When the glance of divine aid falls upon you from Him
And you cross the sea, it signals splitting

62. I beseech you by the Friend, Abu Khalil
And by your lofty name, noble steed

63. Muhammad who granted you praise
And through his name you attained the best derivation

64. To pray for us with a prayer of goodness
Encompassing all your companions and comrades

65. That it includes me, for I have succeeded
Since I am not one who aspires to emancipation

66. I yearn for your dwellings at all times
As the foal yearns for the female ostriches

67. You are my means, and the universe will perish
With a view none but God will remain

68. Your peer in character and natural disposition
And none among your critics has a character
