1. Adam shed his modesty without excuse
Say, "O for love's passion, my excuse!"

2. Indulge in the fever of dissolution and intimacy
And leave those who know not of love's ways to judge

3. Gratify a soul with each delicious draft
And heed not each lofty dignity

4. Unseal the seal of the cup of passion and drink
Full drafts of wine, all sorts of wine

5. Intoxicate not but with love's wine
And love not but for intoxication's sake

6. Drink only the limpid white wine
That shone like the morn in a virgin's palm

7. Delight only in joyous singing
That extols each high and noble thing

8. Obey not passion blindly, else you fall
As passion caused Hammal ibn Badr to fall

9. Blame not time, for every sin
Was wrought by time's sons, every burden theirs

10. All this talk dispraising nights
Is idle talk, O mother of Amr!

11. By your life, this is naught
But the planets' prescribed courses

12. So states come upon each state
And hours pass upon each passing

13. Thus has God judged all creation
In every rank and every age

14. And to submit all affairs to You is incumbent
O You of kindness, Master of all command

15. How much relief I gained from You after straitness
How much ease You granted after hardship

16. How many woes afflicted in nights of calamity
Then their cure came with dawn

17. Consider matters and be wise
Else refrain from all thought

18. Leave off delving, much reflection
On some matters breeds but disbelief

19. Grumble not if you're free
For patience is the trait of each freeman

20. Bitter patience, taste it, and you'll find it sweet
Many a hurt is cured by patience
