Except the Suhail star and intimate friend

5. A love when the breeze blew, shedding his tears
To water yearnings in ardour consuming

6. How long will separation take us in tow
Grasping the lead of estrangement, so noxious?

7. For one who complained of life and refined one
His wish in deprivation, though unjust

8. Should he appease it with righteous rain, it would pour
Upon him clouds, wholly gloom

9. By your life! Naught is the world but a corpse’s cavity
Round which expectant hounds mill and rove

10. Indistinct in it are their woe and joy
For neither endures nor permanent proves

11. So grasp moderation and middle way seek!
For extremism in affairs is pernicious

12. If one owns affluence but self-restraint lacks
Bare living expenses do not suffice him, blameworthy is he!

13. So never trust time, howsoever unclouded
For every era to the noble is rival

14. The world's most foolish dullard is its beloved
And its most hostile foe is the patient one
