1. The stars of morning faces shone in poetry's robes,
Yet darkness mourned the night that has no dawn.

2. O Fate, come to my aid that I may gain my hopes,
And love's affliction finds once more its cure.

3. I see the heart's delight is scent and wine and cheer,
No blame is on the heart if it can rest.

4. Eyes like the doe have beauty and charm so dear,
Dear loveliness, how great the gifts you bring!

5. My soul bears witness, and desire makes clear,
All that these subtle weavings intertwine.

6. Let him excuse who sees the strange and queer
Among the youths, made strange by pain like mine.

7. Not I in spirit risk with lances bright,
Midst archer's darts, that threaten as they quiver.

8. No, by the Lord who knows the secrets of the night,
Save but to meet the pleasure of the Giver.

9. Make haste o friend to gardens of delight,
Where bulbuls sing as feathered choirs deliver,

10. The praise of that great Lord, God's Caliph, Might
Of Mighty Lords, Protector named forever.

11. I weave these strands of pearl, these treasures won
From virtues that belong to him alone.

12. Now hark to me, and witness what he's done,
The wonders he has made that I make known.

13. To right and left his aid is always sure,
Rewards forthose who know true openhandedness.

14. For foes the white blades and the dark doom pure,
But victory and triumph for nobleness!
