- ابدا يسر اخو الجهالة بالذيThe ignorant man is ever pleased with what
- ابكى بني رعد إِلياس العزيز وقدBeloved Elias made the sons of Raʿd weep, and had
- ابكى عيون بني بطيخة اسفاThe eyes of the sons of Battikha were made to weep with grief
- اتى لبني الطوا غلام بوفدهA boy came to the sons of al-Tawa; at his arrival,
- اتى لبني رسلان نجل مباركA blessed son has come to the sons of Raslan;
- اجعل لعقلك مرآة تراه بهاMake for your mind a mirror in which you may see it;
- أحبك يا ظلوم فانت روحيI love you, O cruel one, for you are my soul;
- إحرص على مدح تقلد غائباSeek praise that adorns you in your absence,
- أَحسن بديوان السليم كانهHow beautiful is al-Salīm’s dīwān—as though it were
- أحلى الهوى للعاشقين أمرهThe sweetest love for lovers is its bitterest,
- أخلق بجسمك أن يبيت كليلاHow fitting that your body should pass the night exhausted,
- أدع القضاء فقد دعوت قريباSummon fate, for you have summoned one close at hand.
- إذا استعصمت بالصبر الجميلIf you seek refuge in noble patience,
- اذا انففت ايامكIf you spend your days
- إذا صبرت قوم على شدة الأمرIf people endure the harshness of a trial,
- إذا ما اجتمعنا فالطويل من المدىWhen we meet, the long span of time
- اذا ما كان نوركم ظلاماIf indeed your light is darkness,
- إذا نحن هنأناك كان لنا الهناIf we congratulate you, the joy is ours;
- أرسلت لي مع الرسول سلاماShe sent me a greeting with the messenger.
- ارى العود نشوانا يميل فقيل ليI saw the oud, drunken, swaying, and was told:
- اسكندر الشهم الرفيع مقامهAlexander the noble and high-ranking
- إسمع الماء قائلاHear the water speaking
- أسير عنك بقلب لا أراه معيI journey away from you with a heart I cannot find beside me,
- أشرب كأسين بحبيكمI drink two cups out of my love for you:
- أصبحت ذا كبد بالنار محرقةI have become one with a liver scorched by fire,
- أصبو اذا هب النسيم لاننيI yearn when the breeze blows, because I
- اضرمتم قلبي بنار هواكمYou set my heart ablaze with the fire of love for you.
- اعاد اسم انطون ابن غناجة ابنهHis son revived the name of Antoun, son of Ghannaja,
- اعاد اسم قسطنطين طواسميهHis namesake revived the name of Constantine Tawwa;
- أعلمت ما عندي من الاشواقYou knew what longing I have
- أفدني عن الدنيا فاني ما ادريTell me about this world, for I do not know:
- ألا روحوا روحي برائحة الوردAh, refresh my soul with the scent of roses;
- ألا يا حبذا يوم تجلتAh, what a welcome day, when joys appeared
- الأمس ينشرنا ويطوينا الغدYesterday unfolds us, and tomorrow folds us away.
- الجاذبية تجذب الاجسام منGravity draws bodies from
- الجاه عندك نال اكمل جاهIn you, eminence has attained its fullest height.
- الحسن يأمر والعشاق تأتمرBeauty commands, and lovers obey.
- الخصم ليس له اليك طريقThe adversary has no path to you.
- الخضر جرجس قد شدا طير الهناFor al-Khidr Jirjis, the bird of joy has sung;
- الرجل الذي يكونThe man who is
- الشهب تحت القبة الزرقآءThe shining stars beneath the blue dome
- الصبر إذ تقع المصيبة أوجبPatience is more imperative when misfortune strikes.
- الطبع يشرع بذل بعض فديةNature ordains offering a part as ransom
- المرء تضربه يد الدنيا ولاThe hand of the world strikes a man, yet
- الناس تنظر للفتى من مجهرPeople view a young man through a microscope,
- إليك عن الدنيا انقطعت باسرهاTo you I have devoted myself, forsaking the whole world;
- اليكم مثالا للمحب الذي لكمHere is a portrait of the lover, whose image of you
- أما والهوى لولا العيون السواحرAh, by love, were it not for the bewitching eyes,
- إن البلوغ الى المعالي الساميهIndeed, attaining lofty eminence
- ان الزمان لكل شيء جاعلIndeed, time appoints for everything
- إن الشفاء مجله طبيةIndeed, Al-Shifa is a medical journal;
- إن الضعيف اذا تناهى ضعفهIndeed, when the weak one's weakness reaches its utmost,
- إن اللبيب ينال منIndeed, the wise man draws from
- ان شئت أن لا تعاباIf you wish not to be faulted,
- إن ضاع قلبك فاتهمها أنهاIf your heart is lost, accuse her of being
- ان كنت تأتي المعجزات وكنت ماIf you perform miracles and are
- إن كنت قد أنذرت بالمفقودIf you have been warned of the departed,
- أنشي لسيدة البشارة من بني نفاعErected for Our Lady of the Annunciation by the sons of Naffa.

- بيوم قران ديمتري بأسماOn the day of Dimitri’s marriage to Asma,
- تاهت طرابلس عزا بسيدهاTripoli gloried in her lord,
- تجلت عند الياس فتاةA girl appeared at Al-Yasin
- تدعي الشميل تصغير الشمول علىYou are called al-Shumayyil, the diminutive of al-Shamul (wine), by way

- جاء الرسول مبشري بزيارتيThe messenger came, bringing me glad tidings of my visit
- جرت نغمات العود فيه كانهاThe lute’s notes flowed through it as though
- جردت من لحاظها أسماءThe graceful beauties have been stripped of their charms,
- جسم أخف من المياه وعكسهA body lighter than water, and its opposite,

- جعل اللسان على الفؤاد دليلاThe tongue was made as a guide to the heart
- حبذا ما به لنا الدهر جاداHow welcome is what time has bestowed on us,
- حبيب عدو لي فمنه عداوةA beloved is my enemy; from him comes enmity,
- حدث عن العرب حتى تطرب العجمSpeak of the Arabs until the non-Arabs delight
- حويت من الفضائل ما كفاكاYou have gathered virtues enough to suffice you,
- حيا الحيا زهر الربى فتبسماThe rain greeted the uplands’ blossoms, and they smiled,
- خط الهوى لي سطراLove penned a line for me;
- خليلي ما للعيش ليس بطيبMy two friends, what ails life, that it is not sweet?
- دار غدت مأهولة بقلوبناA house has become inhabited by our hearts,
- دع العتب ان اخطا صديقك فهو لوLeave off reproach if your friend errs, for if it
- دمع العيون على ترابك سائلTears from eyes stream upon your dust,
- دهر به العميان احسن حالةAn age in which the blind fare better
- ديار مكاريوس وآل نمرThe homes of Makarios and the family of Nimr
- ذكرتت عهدهن اوتار عودA lute’s strings recalled their former days,
- رأت قمر السماء فذكرتنيShe saw the moon in the sky and reminded me
- راقت بتوفيق مصر عزة فزهتThrough Tawfiq, Egypt shone in glory and exulted
- رأيت البرايا بين فان يجددI saw all creatures between those that perish and are renewed
- رأيت الورى تختار ليل غوايةI saw the world choose a night of misguidance
- رب شخص حياته دار حربMany a person's life is a battlefield,
- ربما أعجز الفتى الامر سعياSometimes a matter eludes a young man despite his striving
- رسم اليك بعثته واناI sent you a portrait, and I
- رسم له الشرف العظيم لانهA portrait enjoys great honor, for it
- رسم متى ما غبت عنكم كان ليA portrait, whenever I am absent from you, serves me
- رسموه بالشمس المنيرة مثلماThey portrayed him with the radiant sun, just as
- رقيت مقاما انت في الناس فوقهYou have risen to a rank, yet among people you stand above it,
- روت لنا عن قديم الاعصر الأولIt sets before us a tale of the earliest age,
- ريح الصبا هجت أشواقا الى الحللEast wind, you stirred longings for the encampments,
- زف الجمال على انطون غانيةBeauty led a fair maiden to Anton as a bride,
- سألته عن حالهI asked him about his condition.
- سقاك من الحيا صوب العهادMay the downpour of recurring rains water you,
- سلام فاح منه كل طيبA greeting from which every sweet fragrance wafted—
- سلام فوق ما تصف القوافيGreetings beyond what rhymes can describe,
- سلم الله رأسك الموجوعاMay Allah heal your aching head
- سليم الكاتب املقصوف ظلماSalim the writer, unjustly felled
- شكت مثل ذياك الجبين فأقبلتShe complained of what resembled that brow, then turned
- شكت وجعا في عينها فاجبتهاShe complained of pain in her eye, so I answered her:
- شمس اضاءت لنجم فاستضآء بهاA sun shone for a star, and by her was illumined
- شممت لخديها من الورد نفحةI caught a waft of roses from her cheeks.
- شوقي إليك كثير فوق ما اصفMy longing for you is great, beyond what I can describe.
- صاحبتموني فبئست صحبة لي منYou befriended me—what wretched company for me, full of
- صارخا في ربى نجد بواديهاYou who cry out on Najd’s hills, in its valley,
- صبرا بني فرج الله الكرام علىPatience, noble sons of Faraj Allah, at the loss of
- صفت بزفاف إلياس التهانيThe congratulations were sincere at Elias's wedding,
- ضربت بعناب البنان ونقلتI struck the ripe dates and transported
- ضربت فجاوبها الهزار بدوحهShe played, and the nightingale answered her from its leafy grove.
- ضريح قد ثواه كريم قومA tomb where a nobleman of his people has come to rest;
- ضريح لا براهيم جهشان قد سقتA tomb for Ibrahim Jahshan—they have watered
- طلبت من الحبيب دواء جرحI asked my beloved for a cure
- طيور الأنس قد صدحت بروضThe birds of delight have sung in a garden
- عاد الحبيب الينا بعد غيبتهThe beloved returned to us after his absence.
- عتابي اولى من عتابك لو تدريReproaching me is more fitting than reproaching you, if you knew,
- عجبا لعود بات حيا ناطقاHow wondrous—a piece of wood that came alive and spoke,
- عجبت للمال يأتي كل ذي جشعI marvel at wealth, which comes to every greedy man
- عجبت من هذه الدنيا فنعمتهاI marveled at this world, for its bounty
- عزيز مصر الخديوي بالعباد سماEgypt's mighty lord, the Khedive, rose high with his people.
- عزيزة مثل غصن البان قد ذبلتA cherished woman, like a bough of the bān tree, has withered,
- على فراقك ما لي قط مصطبرWithout you, I have no patience at all
- على قوامك تبكي أغصن البانThe moringa boughs weep for your form,
- عن بني راشد قد سارت الىFrom the sons of Rashid she has journeyed to
- عن دار مينا ابن غندور قد ارتحلتShe has departed from the house of Mina ibn Ghandur,
- عوجا بلبنان الخصيب وآلهTurn aside, you two, to fertile Lebanon and its people;
- غصن نضير من بني حوآء قدA verdant bough from among Eve’s children—
- فتاة آل صليبا قد مضت فجرىA young woman of the Saliba family has passed away, and there flowed
- فدى لعطفك غصن الرند والبانMay laurel and moringa branches be ransom for your graceful form;
- فديناك لو أن الردى يقبل الفدىWe would have ransomed you, if death accepted ransom;
- فراق تذكرنا به فرقة الدنياA parting through which we recalled departure from this world.
- فراقك ام لقآء الموت اصعبIs parting from you harder, or meeting death?
- فرنسيس الزنانيري انشاThe wedding has brought him glory and honor
- في اللحد هدلا المقدسي توسدتIn the grave, Hadla al-Maqdisi laid her head,
- في الناس من اصحابه كثيابهAmong people is one whose companions are like his clothes,
- في الناس من يألف الغريباAmong people is one who befriends the stranger,
- في دار شاهين تجلت غادةIn Shahin’s house a graceful maiden appeared;
- قالت وقد ضربت به وتبسمتShe said, having played it and smiled,
- قالوا المعادن لا تشف وليس ذاThey said, “Metals are not transparent”—but this is not
- قد جد من آل الجدي فتى علىIndeed, a youth of the al-Judayy family hastened,
- قد قال كاتب حانوت لتاجرهThe shop owner said to his merchant
- قد يحذر المرء الذيA man may fear the very thing
- قد يسيء الزمان في ظاهر الأمرTime may appear to do wrong,
- قد يعكس الامر اذا شئت انA matter may go awry when you wish to
- قد ينتج الخير شراGood may yield evil,
- قرع الزمان عليك سن النادمTime knocked on you with the years of the regretful one
- قضى الياس ديبو وهو في الست فاقتضىElias Dibo died at six, calling forth
- قف فوق رابية من طور لبنانStand atop a hill on Mount Lebanon,
- قل صبر الفؤاد والشوق غالبThe heart's patience has dwindled, and longing prevails.
- قلبي يحدثني بان فؤادهاMy heart tells me that her heart
- قلنا لذي عود يظل مشاغباWe said to a man with a lute who keeps quarrelling
- كأن فتاة الحي بعد نواناIt is as though the tribe’s maiden, after our parting,
- كأنما جسمه في لينه شمعAs though his body, in its softness, were wax,
- كتبت والشوق يملي والهوى قلمI wrote while longing dictated and love was a pen;
- كريمة لامين الله قد ولدتA noble daughter has been born to Amin Allah,
- كريمة من بني ناصيف قد رحتلA noble woman of the house of Nasif has departed
- كل شيء بالطبع يسعى لدفع الضرEverything by nature strives to ward off the
- كلما احتجت الى الناسWhenever you need the peo-
- كموصل الكهرباء العين موصلةLike an electrical conductor, the eye is a conduit
- لا بارك الله في الدنيا وطالبهاMay God not bless this world, nor whoever seeks her:
- لا بارك الله في سوء الظنون فكمMay God not bless ill suspicions—for how many
- لا بأس من ضنك السقام وبؤسهThere is no harm in sickness's distress and misery;
- لا بد في كل امر من مبالغةIn every matter there must be excess,
- لا بد من كدر يلم بما صفاSome murk must come upon what is clear,
- لا بدع إن كان أعطي القوس باريهاNo wonder if the bow has been given to its maker,
- لا تأخذن بظاهر فلربماDo not judge by outward appearance, for it may be
- لا تركب العفو ما كان الإكاف لهDo not ride the donkey colt as long as it bears a pack saddle;
- لا تطلب ما هان في الدنيا ورمDo not seek what is easy in this world; strive for
- لا تطلبن الامر بعد قواتهDo not seek a thing after it has slipped away.
- لا تعجبن اذا رأيت العود قدDo not marvel if you see the oud has
- لا تعجبوا ان طار قلبي في الهوىDo not marvel if my heart took flight in love,
- لا تقربن قوارص الكلم اللواتيNever go near biting words, which
- لا تكترث ابدا بذي لؤم اتىNever pay heed to a base man who has done
- لا لياس قد جاد الاله بفضلهUpon Elias God, through His grace, has bestowed
- لا يفتخر خداك بالجلنارLet not your cheeks boast of pomegranate blossoms,
- لابن السماط ضريح ارض لم تزلIbn al-Samat has a tomb in the earth; unceasingly
- لأسرة جبرائيل كاتب مضجعFor Gabriel Katib’s family there is a resting place;
- لآل الريس انهلت دموعTears rained for the chieftain's family
- لام فيك كل خليOn your account, every man untouched by love reproached
- لأميننا النكدي نجل طيبOur Amin al-Nakadi has a fine son;
- لبني الشويري الكرام قد انجلىFor the noble al-Shuwayri family there has appeared
- لجبرائيل كاتب قد تجلىFor Gabriel Katib there has appeared
- لحد لابرهيم سركيس الذيA grave for Ibrahim Sarkis, for whom
- لحد لميخائيل صباغ الذيA grave for Mikhail Sabbagh, whom
- لخليل برباري غلام طيبKhalil Barbari has a fine boy.
- لروزة مسك منزل حفه البهاRoza Misk has a home surrounded by splendor.
- لفتاة آل الموصلي مناحةFor a maiden of the al-Mawsili family, a lament:
- لقد شكت لا شكت بردا فقلت لهاIndeed, she complained of cold—may she never have cause to complain—so I said to her:
- لقد لحق السليم اخاه فوراIndeed, he immediately joined Salim, his brother—
- لقد لؤم الورى حتى المصلىIndeed, humanity has grown so base that even the worshipper
- لقد وافى بني الطوا غلامA boy has indeed come to the family of al-Tawa.
- لقد وافى لشاهين غلامA youth came to Shahin, radiant with joy.
- لقد ولدت لالياس فتاةIndeed, a girl was born to Elias,
- لك من قلبي المحب الودودYou have from my loving, affectionate heart
- لك مني اثر العين التيFrom me to you, a trace of my very self,
- لله حصن ببعلبك ولاWhat a fortress at Baalbek! And no
- لله ما أعلق الهوى بيBy God, how firmly passion clings to me
- لله معجزة لعودك محيياWhat a divine miracle your oud works, bringing to life
- لله يا در المباسمGod be praised, O pearls of smiling mouths!
- لما تملكتم على قلبي ولمWhen you gained dominion over my heart, and I
- لنا بك خير تهنئة وبشرThrough you, the finest congratulations and joy are ours,
- لو استطعت جعلت البرق لي قلماIf I could, I would make lightning my pen,
- لو كان يحدو بشجوي سائق الابلIf the camel-driver were to chant my sorrow,
- لو كنت تصحبني الى وادي النقاIf you had accompanied me to Wadi al-Naqa
- ليوسف من آل الصليبي منزلYusuf of the al-Salibi family has a home;
- ما أعجب الدينار حين يكون معHow wondrous the dinar when it is with
- ما شاهدان الى الشهادة ألجئاWhich two witnesses were compelled to testify,
- ما كان احلى المنى لو أن لذتهاHow sweet wishes would be, if their delight
- ما مثل شخصك بين الناس إنسانNo human among the people is like you;
- متأنق لا شيء يعجبهA perfectionist, nothing pleases him,
- مثل الجاهل في إعجابهThe likeness of the fool in his self-admiration
- مثل العقل وما يجهلهThe mind and what it does not know are mirrored
- مخافة واش اسبلت غاسق الشعرFearing a talebearer, she let down the darkness of her hair,
- مذاكرة الآداب ما بين اهلهاThe discussion of literature among its devotees
- مرحبا بالشمس التي قد تجلتWelcome to the sun that has shone forth!
- مرض الحبيب بجسمه من لطفهThe beloved fell ill in body from his delicacy.
- مضى الى الله انطون الكريم وقدNoble Antoun has gone to God, having
- مضى إلى الله قسطنطين مصطحباConstantine departed to God, taking along
- مطراننا الزغبي يوسف قد بنىOur bishop Yusuf al-Zoghbi has built
- من ارتقي عاداه اقرانهWhoever rises is opposed by his peers,
- من آل حلاق عزيز راحلA dear one of the Hallaq family has departed.
- من آل رحال عزيزة معشرOf the Rahhal family, beloved of her people,
- من آل رعد الاكرمين مودعA man of the most noble house of Raʿd, bid farewell,
- من آل عبوج شهم سار مرتحلاA noble man of the house of ʿAbbūj journeyed away
- من آل قطان عزيز راحلA beloved one of the Qattan family has departed.
- من الغرب وافى كوكب الشرق عن قربFrom the West the star of the East has lately come,
- من شم تفاحة لا بد يأكلهاWhoever smells an apple is bound to eat it.
- من صحب الدنيا ولم يستفدWhoever keeps company with the world and gains no benefit
- ناحت عيون بني فركوح بعد فتىThe eyes of the sons of Farkouh wept at the loss of a young man,
- نبض الصوارم تفدي الأعين السوداThe pulse of keen swords ransoms the black eyes;
- نبهني الحب من رقاديLove roused me from my slumber,
- نجل به جاد المهيمن حيث قدA son whom the Guardian generously bestowed, for indeed
- نجم من القمرين النيرين بداA star appeared from the two radiant moons.
- نزلت عليك من البها آياتهSplendor's verses have descended upon you,
- نسيبنا الجنبلاطي الكريم سمتOur noble Nasib al-Jumblatti—there has risen
- نعم الزفاف زفاف البدر مقترناSplendid is the wedding—the full moon's wedding, united
- نور التجارب يستفادThe light of experience is gain—
- هذا الضريح شهم في التراب ثوىHere in this tomb a valiant man came to rest in the dust;
- هذا المحرك بالمياه وإنهThis water-driven engine—indeed, it is
- هذا خليلك يا حبيب خليلهThis is your Khalil, O Habib, beloved of his friend.
- هذا فؤادي رهن في يديك الىThis heart of mine is held in pledge in your hands—to
- هذا كتابي نائبا عني وقدThis is my book, standing in for me, and I have
- هذا مثال محبThis is a lover’s likeness;
- هذا مثال محب رسمكم ابداThis is the portrait of a lover, with your image forever
- هذا مثالي ان أغبThis is my likeness, should I be absent;
- هذا مثالي فهو لي مشبهIt is my ideal example, it resembles me
- هذا مثالي في يديك جعلتهI have placed this likeness of mine in your hands,
- هذا هلال من شهاب نيرThis is a crescent sprung from a radiant meteor;
- هذي الثريا بدت في منزل الملكThis chandelier appeared in the king's palace
- هذي ثريا الارض لاحت في سماThis earthly chandelier appeared in a sky
- هو الموت الا ان خطبك اعظمIt is death, yet your calamity is greater;
- هوى بين التحرك والسكونLove between motion and stillness,
- هويت بدرا اذا ما لاح مكتملاI fell in love with a full moon when he appeared in all his fullness;
- هي الدنيا محاسنهاThe world—its beauties,
- وإذا اليراع تداولته يمينهAnd when his right hand wields the reed pen,
- وجماعة تلقاك باسمةAnd many a group greets you smiling,
- وجودك فضل للزمان وجودYour presence is a boon to the age and a bounty
- ورب حبيب لي عدو علي لاAnd many a beloved of mine is an enemy to me; I never
- ورب حبيب لي عدو علي لم يزلAnd many a beloved of mine—an enemy to me—has never
- ورب ضارب عود كلما نعستAnd many a lute-player, whenever drowsiness overtook
- ورب مصاحب لك لاعتزارAnd many a companion befriends you to feel superior
- وريشة ذكرت عهدا لصاحبهاAnd a plectrum recalled its former bond with its player—
