Greetings beyond what rhymes can describe,
Abundant beyond what vast deserts can contain;
وَشَوقٌand longing فيin فؤادٍa heart ضمَّharbored ناراًa fire
فكانَso it became بهاwith it كثالثةlike the third of الأَثافيthe hearthstones
And longing in a heart that harbored fire,
So, with that fire, it became like the third hearthstone.
حَرامٌwrong أَنthat يُشاقَbe made to yearn القَلبُthe heart منيof mine
اليكَfor you وانتwhile you منهُof it فيin الشغافِthe heart's core
It is wrong for my heart to yearn
For you, when you dwell in its innermost core,
وانand that يَجريflow لبُعدكَbecause of your distance دمعthe tears of عينيmy eye
وَعنهاwhile from it نورُthe light of وجهكَyour face غيرnot خافِhidden
And for my eye's tears to flow because you are far away,
While the light of your face is not hidden from it.

Whenever mention of you passes over my tongue,
It grows sweet, until it recalls the taste of choice wine.

فَكانَso it became طبيعةًa natural disposition وبهاand by it اتّصافيmy being characterized
Ah, you whom I grew up loving,
So that love became my nature and my defining trait.
احبُّكَI love you لاnot أُلامI am blamed ولستُand I am not اخشىI fear
كَعُشّاقlike the lovers of الورىhumankind مُرَّthe bitterness of التَجافيestrangement
I love you, and am not to blame; nor do I fear,
As the world's lovers do, the bitterness of estrangement.
مضىhas passed زَمَنٌa time سترجعyou will return عَنin قَريبٍa short while

A time has passed; you will soon return
To it, and all that is destined will come to pass.

I have tasted union in many forms, and I
Have now become content with the barest sustenance.
