عِتابيَreproaching me اولىmore fitting منthan عتابكَreproaching you لَوif تَدريyou knew
لانيَbecause I قدindeed خالفتُI went against ماwhat اِعتدتُI was accustomed to فيthroughout عمريmy life
Reproaching me is more fitting than reproaching you, if you knew,
My reproach is better than your reproach, if only you knew
for I have gone against what I was accustomed to all my life.
For I have gone against what I was used to all my life
تعوَّدتُI became accustomed أَنّيthat I لاnot أُعاتبI reproach مذنِباًan offender
وَلَوand even if كُنتُI were صُحراًṢuḥr وهوand he كانwas أَباfather of صُحرِṢuḥr
I have made it my habit never to reproach an offender,
I was accustomed never to reproach a sinner
even were I Ṣuḥr and he Abū Ṣuḥr.
Even if I were a desert and he the father of deserts
لأَنيbecause I أُلفيI find العتبَreproach إِماeither تَرَضيّاًappeasement
وإِماor else تَشَفٍّvindictive satisfaction فهوso it يقبحُis unbecoming بالحُرِّto a noble man
For I find reproach either an attempt to appease,
Because I'm used to reproach, either to please
or vindictive satisfaction, which ill becomes a noble man.
Or to avenge, which is ugly in the noble
فأَمّاso as for الترضيَappeasement فهوthen it شَرُّthe worst مَذَلَّةٍhumiliation
وامّاand as for التَشَفيvindictive satisfaction فهوthen it كالأَخذlike taking بالثأرِvengeance
As for appeasement, it is the worst humiliation,
As for pleasing, it is the worst humiliation
and vindictive satisfaction is like taking revenge.
And as for avenging, it is like taking revenge
اذنtherefore فالتشفيso vindictive satisfaction يعدلequals الذنبthe offense والَّذيand what
أَلومI blame علىfor إِجراهُcommitting it كيفَhow لَهُto him أُجريI carry out
Thus vindictive satisfaction equals the offense; and what
So avenging equals the sin, and what
I blame him for doing, how could I do to him?
I blame for committing it, how can I allow it
وَلكنand yet كَلاميmy speech لَيسَis not هَذاthis وليسand is not ذاthat
فَلَيسَso it is not عتاباًreproach بَلrather ضروبٌkinds منof الذكرِreminding
But what I say is neither this nor that;
But my words are not this, nor that
it is not reproach, but various kinds of reminders.
It's not reproach, but ways of remembrance
كَلامٌspeech يُسمىis called بالعتابby the name reproach كماjust as الطِلاwine
تسمىّis called عَجوزاًan old woman وَهيand it أَفتىyounger منthan البِكرِa maiden
Words called reproach, just as wine
Words called reproach, like an old woman
is called an old woman, though younger than a maiden.
Called barren, yet more fertile than a virgin
وانand if شِمتَyou discerned فيهِin it بعضَsome عتبٍreproach فاننيthen I
اسميهِI call it تبكيتاًa rebuke لِمرتكِبto the perpetrator of الوِزرِsin
And if you discern in it a trace of reproach, I
And if you detect in it some reproach, I
call it a rebuke to the perpetrator of sin:
Call it lament for the committer of sin
لمرتكبٍto one committing ماwhat العقلreason بكرههُwith abhorrence of it
يُناقضهُopposes it الطبعnature السَليمsound منof النُكرِevil
to one who commits what reason holds in abhorrence,
For a committer, whom reason does not hate
and sound nature rejects as evil.
Contradicted by sound natural instinct
وماand not هُوَhe الّاexcept انتَyou بلindeed لستَyou are not غيرَهُother than him
وَلِمand why لاnot وقدand indeed افرطتَyou went to excess فيin العجبconceit والكبرِand pride
And he is none other than you—indeed, you are none other than him.
It is none but you, or rather, it is not but you
And why not, when you have gone to excess in conceit and pride?
Why not, when you have gone too far in self-conceit and pride
رُوَيدَكَrestrain yourself يَكفيsuffices بعضُsome of كبركyour pride إِنَّهُindeed it
علىfor الشجرthe trees العاليtall يُخافone fears منof الكسرِbreaking
Easy now! A little of your pride is enough, for
Restrain yourself, some of your arrogance is enough
one fears that tall trees may break.
For tall trees are feared to break from it
وَماand not ينفعbenefits الاشجارَthe trees طولٌheight لساقهاof their trunks
اذwhen لمnot يُقابلهُmatches it التعمُّقُdeepening للجِذرِof the root
And the height of their trunks does the trees no good
And it does not benefit trees to have long trunks
when it is not matched by the depth of their roots.
If not matched by deep roots
