A greeting from which every sweet fragrance wafted—

I sent it to the beloved's dwelling.

    May a greeting from afar

Take the place of a greeting from nearby,

And may a greeting from you to us

Come to me with the south wind.

May God water the dwellings where we once lived,

For those, with their familiar warmth, are the stranger's homeland.

I yearn for their precincts at every moment,

As the sick person longs for the physician.

And I await the breeze—perhaps it holds

A greeting for us from them as it blows.

May we be reunited after separation,

So that our sun may rise after sunset.
