A grave for Ibrahim Sarkis, for whom
A grave for Ibrahim Sarkis, who
Every tear has flowed in sorrow.
Every tear shed grieves for him
فيat سنِّthe age of خمسينfifty اِنقضتended ايامهُhis days
في سنِّ خمسين اِنقضت ايامهُ
فَمَضىso he departed وأَخلفand left behind حرقةًburning grief وتحسُّراand regret
فَمَضى وأَخلف حرقةً وتحسُّرا
At fifty years of age, his days came to an end;
At fifty his days were completed
So he departed and left behind burning grief and regret.
So he left, leaving behind burning and regret

والبرَّ وَالتَقوى كَما ابكى الوَرى
His loss made learning and reason weep,
Friends and neighbors weep his loss
And righteousness and piety, just as it made humankind weep.
As all creation weeps virtue and piety

This is the close friend of God and humankind, whom
This friend of God and people whom
The Lord of the Throne called from the loftiest summits.
The Lord of the Throne called from the Highest Heaven

كالسيف بالتأريخ يُغمد في الثرى
They buried him in the folds of the earth, and he remains
They buried him in the bosom of the earth yet he remains
Like a sword—in the chronogram—sheathed in the soil.
Like a sword engraved in history, sheathed in the soil
