    Gravity draws bodies from

all directions toward a center of which it is the source.

And the earth keeps whatever lies above it from that center,

so its weight then bears upon the earth.

And water is part of the earth, except that it is

more yielding, so it holds back a portion and bears it up.

And this restraint varies with density, wherever

the weight of bodies is reckoned according to density.

So, in proportion to the water's weight, it keeps from that center whatever

is above it or within it, as it occupies its space.

So when a light body settles in it, we have

a subtraction of some weight when we release it.

So it then seeks to rise; and if there is

a heavy body with it, an equal amount is taken from its weight.

Since it prevented its rising, it grew lighter by as much as

it had held it back; thus its surplus remained there.

So the light body became as though it were nothing; for

the entire subtraction from it passed to the heavy body.

And likewise the heavy body has grown lighter in weight

in water; so the two reductions combine, and this is the explanation.
