يا موت زُر فَحياتي لست ارضاها
بعدafter الاحبَّةthe loved ones اذwhen زُمَّتwere bridled مَطاياهاtheir mounts
بعد الاحبَّة اذ زُمَّت مَطاياها
O Death, visit me, for I am not content with my life
O death, visit me, for I do not delight in life
Since my loved ones departed, their mounts bridled.
After my loved ones, now that their abodes are desolate
ليتif only الاحبَّةthe loved ones اذwhen سارَتset out رَكائِبُهاtheir riding beasts
ليت الاحبَّة اذ سارَت رَكائِبُها
تحمَّلتنيcarried me along فَلَمso did not أَحمِلI bear بَلاياهاits afflictions
تحمَّلتني فَلَم أَحمِل بَلاياها
If only my loved ones, when their mounts set out,
If only my loved ones, when their mounts departed
Had taken me along, so I would not have borne life's afflictions.
Had taken me along, and I had not borne their tribulations
احبابَناour loved ones ماwhat لَناfor us وَالعيشَand life بعدكُمafter you
احبابَنا ما لَنا وَالعيشَ بعدكُم
فَلفظةfor the word العيشlife انتمyou جلُّthe greater part of مَعناهاits meaning
فَلفظة العيش انتم جلُّ مَعناها
Our loved ones, what is life to us after you?
Our loved ones, what is life to us without you?
For you are most of what the word 'life' means.
For the word 'life' - you are its full meaning
لَقَدindeed فَقدناwe lost لذيذthe sweetness of العيشlife بعدكمُafter you
لَقَد فَقدنا لذيذ العيش بعدكمُ
وحبذاand how welcome الروحُthe soul ماemphatic particle لَوif فقدناهاwe lost it
وحبذا الروحُ ما لَو فقدناها
Indeed, we have lost life's sweetness since you left,
We have lost the sweetness of life after you
And how welcome it would be if we lost our souls!
If only the soul had left us too
رحلتمُyou departed فرأَيناand so we saw الارضthe earth مُوحَشةًdesolate
رحلتمُ فرأَينا الارض مُوحَشةً
كانناas though we فيin ديارٍlands ماnot وطئناهاwe had set foot in them
كاننا في ديارٍ ما وطئناها
You departed, and we saw the earth desolate,
You left, and we saw the earth desolate
As though we were in lands we had never set foot in.
As if we were in lands we had never trod
وَلَمand did not نَجدwe find بعدكمafter you فيin غيركمothers besides you عوَضاًa replacement
وَلَم نَجد بعدكم في غيركم عوَضاً
عنكمfor you فآهاًso, alas علىover ترحالكمyour departure آهاalas
عنكم فآهاً على ترحالكم آها
And since you left, we have found in no one else a replacement
And found none after you as solace
For you—alas for your departure, alas!
Ah, for your departure - Ah!
واحسرتاoh, my sorrow ليستis not الدنياthe world بنافعةٍof any use
واحسرتا ليست الدنيا بنافعةٍ
ياoh ليتهاif only it تركتناit had left us اوor تركناهاwe had left it
يا ليتها تركتنا او تركناها
Alas! The world is of no use.
Woe that the world is of no use
Oh, if only it had left us, or we had left it!
If only it had left us or we had left it
ضاقَتgrew narrow بناfor us وَعليناand upon us وهيand it is واسعةٌvast
ضاقَت بنا وَعلينا وهي واسعةٌ
واقفرتand became deserted بعدكمafter you والناسand the people تملاهاfill it
واقفرت بعدكم والناس تملاها
It grew narrow for us and closed in upon us, though it is vast,
It narrowed on us while being vast
And became deserted after you, though people fill it.
And was emptied after you though filled with people
