عجباً لعودٍ بات حيّاً ناطقاً
اذwhen ماتit died عنfrom بَسٍunclear; likely dryness وجفَّand dried out العودُthe wood
اذ مات عن بَسٍ وجفَّ العودُ
How wondrous—a piece of wood that came alive and spoke,
when it had died from [dryness] and the wood had dried out!
فبأيّthen by what حكمdecree كانwas هَذاthis قيلit was said فيunder
فبأيّ حكم كان هَذا قيل في
حكمٍa decree عجيبٍwondrous سنَّهُhe laid it down داوودُDavid
حكمٍ عجيبٍ سنَّهُ داوودُ
Then by what decree did this happen? It was said: under
a wondrous decree that David laid down.
