ابكى عيون بَني بطيخةٍ اسفاً

غصنٌ نضيرٌ لواهُ البين فانكسرا

غصنٌ نضيرٌ لواهُ البين فانكسرا

The eyes of the sons of Battikha were made to weep with grief

The eyes of the sons of Batikhah weep in sorrow,

by a verdant bough that separation bent until it broke.

A tender branch whose separation caused us pain and thus it broke.

لَم تبلغ الخمس والعشرين مدَّتُهُ

لَم تبلغ الخمس والعشرين مدَّتُهُ

فراح كالغصن لم نجني لهُ ثمرا

فراح كالغصن لم نجني لهُ ثمرا

His lifespan had not reached twenty-five years;

It had not reached twenty five years of age,

so he departed like a bough whose fruit we had not gathered.

So it departed like an unripened fruit that gave us no harvest.

مضى إِلى المنزل الباقي المُعَدِّ لَهُ

مضى إِلى المنزل الباقي المُعَدِّ لَهُ

وَغادر الحزن في الاحشآءِ مستعرا

وَغادر الحزن في الاحشآءِ مستعرا

He went to the everlasting abode prepared for him,

It went to the eternal abode prepared for it,

and left sorrow blazing in our entrails.

And left behind in our hearts a blazing grief.

فقل لجرجُسَ قد نلتَ النعيمَ بِهِ

فقل لجرجُسَ قد نلتَ النعيمَ بِهِ

ارّخ وقد بتَّ فيهِ لابساً ظفرا

ارّخ وقد بتَّ فيهِ لابساً ظفرا

So say to Jurjus: 'You have attained bliss therein.'

Say to Gergis you have attained the bliss through it,

Record the date: 'And now you dwell therein, clad in triumph.'

Inscribe that you have achieved a triumph while wearing it.
