We said to a man with a lute who keeps quarrelling

with it endlessly, like an angered, enraged man,

and making it taste jabs and punches, seizing

it by the throat as one seizes a blue-eyed foe,

and as though he were always demanding of it something

in which it disobeys him, so he showed no pity:

“Has it disobeyed you in anything?” He said, “How could it not?

And have you not heard how often I tell it, ‘Speak!’?”
