حَوَيتَyou have gathered منof الفَضائلthe virtues ماwhat كفاكاsufficed you
وجدتَand you were generous بماwith what تركتَyou left لمنfor those who سواكاare other than you
You have gathered virtues enough to suffice you,
and were generous with what you left for others.
وَجُزتَand you passed الىto مدىthe reach of زُهرِradiant الدراريthe brilliant stars
فكُنَّso they became مَناقِباًvirtues لكَfor you فيin علاكاyour eminence
And you reached the realm of the radiant stars,
and they became your virtues in your exalted station.
فَماso not يُثنىpraise is bestowed عليكَupon you بأَنfor the fact that تُحاكيyou imitate
وَلَيسَand not تُعابُyou are faulted إِلّاأَنexcept that تُحاكىyou are imitated
So you are not praised for imitating others,
and your only fault is that others imitate you.
وَلَيسَand not ثناؤُناour praise منّاfrom us ولكنbut
صدىthe echo of افعالكَyour deeds الحُسنىnoble ثناكاpraise of you
Our praise comes not from us; rather,
your praise is the echo of your noble deeds.
أَلاbehold ياO نخلةًa palm tree فيin روضِa garden of فَضلٍvirtue
وَلَيسَand not سوىother than المآثرglorious deeds منfrom جناكاyour fruit
Lo, O palm tree in a garden of virtue,
your fruit is nothing but glorious deeds.
وَماand not سُميتَwere you named عنout of عَبَثٍidle whim ولكنbut
رأىsaw فيكَin you العُلىeminence منthe one who قدindeed دَعاكاnamed you
You were not named on a whim; rather,
the one who named you saw eminence in you.
علوتَyou rose high بهمةٍthrough resolve عزَّتwas mighty وَطالَتand rose high
فماso not إِنindeed (emphatic) نَستَطيعُwe can لهاto it دَراكاattainment
You rose through resolve both mighty and lofty,
so we cannot possibly attain it;
وَنَفسٍand a soul لاnot ترىdeems شَيئاًanything خَطيراweighty
لديهاin its eyes غيرَexcept أَنthat تقضيit fulfills مُناكاyour wishes
and through a soul that deems nothing weighty
save the fulfillment of your wishes.
تَبارَكَblessed be مَنHe who بَراكَfashioned you أَجلَّthe noblest شهمٍgallant man
وَفيand in كبدِthe liver of العدىthe foes سهماًan arrow براكاHe shaped you
Blessed be He who made you the noblest of gallant men,
and fashioned you as an arrow in the liver of the foe.
ثناؤُكَpraising you فيamong البَريَّةِhumankind فرضan obligation عينٍon each individual
فَمَنso whoever لمdid not يمتدحكَpraise you فقدthen indeed هجاكاhas reviled you
Praising you is an individual duty for all mankind;
so whoever fails to praise you has indeed reviled you.
لَئِنif indeed قصرَّتُI fell short فيكَregarding you فَلَيسَthen it is not بدعٌa novelty
فقدfor indeed قصرَّتُI fell short عنكَof you كمثلِjust like ذاكاthat
If I have fallen short in praising you, it is no wonder;
for I fall just as short of your stature.
ذكرتُI mentioned مودَّةًan affection لكَfor you أَدَّعيهاI claim it
بحقِّby right of الارثِinheritance يعضدهُsupports it وَلاكاyour friendship
I spoke of an affection for you that I claim
by right of inheritance, upheld by your friendship;
وَفَضلاًand a kindness فوقهاbeyond it لاnot تدَّعيهِyou claim it
للطفٍout of graciousness منكَfrom you فاِقتضياso both required وفاكاloyalty to you
and of a kindness beyond it, which you do not claim,
out of your graciousness; both called for loyalty to you.
ورُمتُand I sought وَفاfulfillment of الحقوقِthe obligations فطالبتَنيso you demanded of me
بماfor what لاnot استَطيعُI am able بِهِwith it حراكاa movement
I sought to fulfill these obligations, but you demanded of me
what leaves me unable to stir.
فانso if تمنُنyou graciously grant بعذركَwith your pardon عنfor قصوريmy shortcoming
فذلكthen that بعضpart of ماwhat اِصطَنعتhave wrought يداكاyour two hands
So if you grant me pardon for my failing,
that is but one of the kindnesses your hands have wrought.
