The tears of eyelids water your dust.

O branch of a bān tree—rather, a little bān twig!

You are the little branch that sprouted, but did not grow

Enough to be counted among the branches.

Time snapped your tender, dewy frame,

And such is the way of fate's sudden blows.

They planted you in earth, hoping you might live through it,

And watered you with a flood of streaming tears.

    But those tears are hot,

And so are the tears of sorrow.

So then you withered a second time:

    Seeking increase brings decrease.

So let us weep there and water your grave with our tears,

For we no longer fear any loss.

Perhaps we may at least moisten its soil,

And sprigs of basil may grow upon it,

So they may show that within it, beneath them,

Lies one like them in delicacy and swaying.

And so they may sway when winds blow from opposing sides,

Like the swaying of a weeping, sorrowful sufferer.

And the leaves may clap like the clapping of a man

In pain, or a lover distraught with longing.

And from them their blossoms may breathe forth fragrances,

Sweet-scented in their hems and sleeves.

So when a youth passes there, he turns aside to them,

Reciting over you the greeting of brethren.

And their roots draw sustenance from you, so you return in

Their branches, alive in another form.

Thus you return as a branch, as you once were in

This life, in the realm of living creatures.

And you return as a radiant blossom full of delight,

Just as you were in the world of humankind.

And sweet fragrances waft from you,

Telling of the delicate qualities within you.

And your lovely appearance returns, and your mouth,

Ever smiling, like necklaces of pure gold.

Alas for these words, for they

Scorch hearts with the searing blaze of fire,

And add to sorrows; yet grief

Could not be borne as sorrows increased.

You left your mother with your father in anguish,

And mourning too great for consolation.

Why did you not hear them, when parting's hour came,

Both weeping in sorrow and sobbing?

They weep for you; fate overtook you

Before tender youth, your fingertips still soft.

At nine, death claimed you too soon; their weeping

Has a duration no reckoning of time can measure.

If you were counted among boys in

Age, you are not one of them.

You had the mind of mature men; indeed, there came

Time itself to you, bearing proof:

It erred, thinking you their equal in years—and how many

Errors this treacherous, guilty Time has made!

They gave you the rock's name for its steadfastness,

So it made you firm—but in the perishable tomb.

And there you became a rock, with neither hearing nor

Sight—may my soul and both my eyes ransom you!

You dashed their hopes of you, though it was not

Your habit to disappoint and forsake.

Blessed is one like you, since you departed free

From sin of heart, hand, or tongue.

And left this deceitful world, hastening

To meet your namesake in the sanctuary of the All-Merciful.
