The rain greeted the uplands’ blossoms, and they smiled,
The rain greeted the flowers of the hills, and they smiled,
revealing a mouth’s pearls, strung with dew.
revealing a mouth’s pearls, already strung with dew.

سحراًbefore dawn علىabove الروضthe meadow الهَزارَthe nightingale فنغمّاso it sang
The breeze stole on, and its stirrings awakened
And the breeze wafted through; its stirrings awakened
at dawn above the meadow the nightingale, which poured forth melody.
the nightingale above the meadow before dawn, and it sang.
وَعيونand the eyes اكمامof the flower-buds الرياضof the meadows تفتَّحتopened
منfrom بعدafter انthat كانتthey had been ثِقالاًheavy نُوَّماasleep
The eyes of the garden’s buds opened
And the eyes of the meadows’ flower-buds opened,
after they had lain heavy, fast asleep.
after they had lain heavy with sleep.
فَبداso ... appeared لناto us زَهرthe blossoms النجومof the low-growing plants كأَنَّهُas though it were

Then the low plants’ blossoms appeared to us as though
So the blossoms of the low-growing plants appeared to us as though they were
radiant stars were gleaming in heaven’s heart.
bright stars gleaming in the heart of the sky.
وَالغصنand the bough يرقصdances فيin الرياضthe meadows مصفِّقاًclapping
وَالطيرand the birds يَشدوsing فوقهُabove it مترَنِّماwarbling
The bough dances in the garden, clapping,
And the bough dances in the meadows, clapping,
while the bird sings above it, trilling melodiously.
and the birds sing above it, warbling.
وَالماءُand the water جاراهُkept pace with it النَسيمُthe breeze مطارداًpursuing
متسابِقَينِthe two racing each other تأَخُّراًfalling behind وتقدُّماand advancing
The breeze raced alongside the water, pursuing it,
And the breeze kept pace with the water, pursuing it,
the pair vying—now falling behind, now drawing ahead.
the two racing, now falling behind, now pressing ahead.

أَوَand ...? ماnot يُرىis seen متجعّداًrippling متهشِّماbreaking apart
Part of the water resisted it, so that its flow might slow:
And some resisted it, so that its flow would slow—
is it not seen all wrinkled and shattered?
and is it not seen rippling and breaking apart?
وَالزهرand the blossom فوقabove الغصنthe bough فيamid اثمارهِits fruits
خدٌّa cheek علىupon نهدٍa breast وقدٍّand a figure قدhas سماgrown tall
The blossom above the bough, amid its fruits—
And the blossom above the bough, amid its fruits,
a cheek upon a breast, and a slender form risen tall.
is a cheek upon a breast and a figure that has grown tall.
