What a fortress at Baalbek! And no

wonder if we call it a mountain.

A mighty tower—all towers are to it

stones that scorn the mountain peaks.

If the jinn were real, we would ascribe

it to them in the remotest past.

How did the people who are gone build it?

And who were they, I wonder, among the nations?

A people who are lions, while other mortals are cattle—

if the workers' stature matches their work.

    As though gravity had ceased

for a time, so that no weight remained there.
