هَويتُ بدراً اذا ما لاحَ مكتملاً

هَويتُ بدراً اذا ما لاحَ مكتملاً

تَوارَت الشَمسُ حتىّ ما تلاقيهِ

تَوارَت الشَمسُ حتىّ ما تلاقيهِ

I fell in love with a full moon when he appeared in all his fullness;

I loved a full moon: whenever he appeared in his fullness,

the sun withdrew so that she would not meet him.

The sun hid herself, lest she meet him.

لامت على حبِّهِ الغيد الملاح الى

لامت على حبِّهِ الغيد الملاح الى

ان لاحَ وَالزُهرُ قد نُظِّمنَ في فيهِ

ان لاحَ وَالزُهرُ قد نُظِّمنَ في فيهِ

The graceful beauties blamed me for loving him, until

The graceful beauties reproached me for loving him, until

he appeared, with gleaming pearls arrayed within his mouth.

He appeared, with bright stars strung in his mouth.

فَقلنَ اذ هِمنَ مِمّا قد شُغِفنَ بِهِ

فَقلنَ اذ هِمنَ مِمّا قد شُغِفنَ بِهِ

ماذا الفَتى بشراً سبحان مُنشيهِ

ماذا الفَتى بشراً سبحان مُنشيهِ

Then, once they had become infatuated and smitten with him, they said:

Then, love-distraught by what had enthralled them, they said:

“What a youth! Joy be yours—glory to his Creator!”

“This youth is no mortal! Glory be to his Maker!”

فَقُلتُ باللَه هَل تعذُلنَ عاشقَهُ

فَقُلتُ باللَه هَل تعذُلنَ عاشقَهُ

فَقُلنَ كَيفَ وإِنّا من مُحبيِّهِ

فَقُلنَ كَيفَ وإِنّا من مُحبيِّهِ

I said, “By God, will you blame the one who loves him?”

Then I said, “By God, do you reproach his lover?”

They said, “How could we, when we too are among his lovers?”

Then they said, “How could we, when we are among his lovers?”

فَقُلتُ اذ ذاكَ لا تعذلنَني ابداً

فَقُلتُ اذ ذاكَ لا تعذلنَني ابداً

فذلكُنَّ الَّذي لمتنني فيهِ

فذلكُنَّ الَّذي لمتنني فيهِ

I said, “Then never blame me again,

Then I said, “In that case, never reproach me,

for this is the very one for whom you blamed me.”

For that is the one you blamed me for loving.”
