فيamong الناسpeople مَنsomeone اصحابُهhis companions كثيابِهlike his clothes
وكانهُand as though he ابداًalways بحفلةat a gathering عيدِa holiday
Among people is one whose companions are like his clothes,
Among people are those whose friends are like their clothes,
As though he were always at a holiday gathering.
As if he is always at a feast.
لاnot يطمعنَّlet him hope بِهِin him الجديدthe new companion فانهُfor the fact is
كَمhow many منof قَديمٍan old companion قبلهُbefore him وَجديدِand a new companion
Let the new companion place no hope in him, for
Do not hope for him with anything new, for
How many old companions and new have preceded him!
How many old and new before him there have been.
وَلربماand sometimes اضحىbecame لَهُto him متقذّراًrepulsive
فَنَفاهُso he cast him out نفيَthe casting out of الدرهمthe dirham المَردودِrejected
And sometimes the newcomer becomes repulsive to him,
And perhaps he has become despised to him
So he casts him off as one discards a rejected dirham.
So he discards him like a rejected coin.
