مَنِwhoever ارتقيrose عاداهُopposed him اقرانُهُhis peers
مَنِ ارتقي عاداهُ اقرانُهُ
مِمَّنamong those who رَبيgrew up معهُwith him ولمand did not يرنقِflutter his wings
مِمَّن رَبي معهُ ولم يرنقِ
Whoever rises is opposed by his peers,
He who rises is envied by his peers,
among those who grew up with him but never fluttered their wings.
Unlike those who were raised with him, but did not excel.
ياO عجباwonder! ماذاwhat يضرُّharms الفَتىthe young man
يا عجبا ماذا يضرُّ الفَتى
سَبقُgetting ahead سواهُsomeone other than him وهوwhile he لمnot يوثَقِbe fettered
سَبقُ سواهُ وهو لم يوثَقِ
How strange! What harm is there to a young man
How strange! Why should it hurt the young man
in another's getting ahead, when he himself is not fettered?
If another outperforms him when he did not try his best?
