فَقَدfor indeed جاءَناhas come to us فصلthe season of الرَبيعspring منfrom البُعدِafar
Ah, refresh my soul with the scent of roses;
for spring has come to us from afar.
أَلاAh! متعونيlet me enjoy مرَّةًonce منsome of شَميمِهits fragrance
فيذهبَso that … may depart عنيfrom me بعضsome of ماwhat بيis within me منof الوَجدِpassionate longing
Ah, let me delight once in its fragrance,
so some of the longing within me may pass away.
هُوَhe الوَردُthe rose طيباًin fragrance وازدهآءًand in radiance ومنظراًand in appearance
وزهرتُهُand its blossom منهُfrom him علىupon ذلكthat الخَدِّcheek
He is the rose in fragrance, radiance, and appearance,
and its blossom is upon that cheek of his.
وأَشواكُهُand its thorns اشواقُناour longings لجمالِهِfor his beauty
وَحاشاهُand far be it from him منfrom شوكٍthorns علىupon ذلكthat القدِّfigure
Its thorns are our longings for his beauty,
yet far be thorns from that figure of his.
وَلِلَّهِand to God (in admiration) وَردٌa rose لَيسَdoes not يبرحُcease to be ناضِراًfresh
فَلَمfor … did not يَكُbe مختصّاconfined بشهرٍto a month لهُfor it فردِsingle
God be praised for a rose that never ceases to be fresh,
for it was never confined to one particular month.

I yearn for him as a stag longs
for the water with which it quenches its thirst.

لناto us منfrom لَدُنهُhis presence حامِلاًbearing ارَجَthe fragrance of النَدِّaromatic incense
And I yearn for the breaths of the breeze when it comes
to us from him, bearing the fragrance of incense.

مَحاضِرُgatherings لاnot تُنسىare forgotten علىdespite قِدَمthe remoteness of العَهدِthe former time
May God water a garden of his, where we once held
gatherings never forgotten, however long ago.
محاضِرُgatherings كانَwas الدهرُTime بعضَone of حضورهاthose attending them
مَعwith الصفوفthe ranks الايناسcompanionship والبِشرand cheer والسَعدِand good fortune
Gatherings where Time was among those present,
alongside the ranks, companionship, cheer, and good fortune.
رأَىhe saw ماwhat بهاwas in them منof رائقdelightful الأُنسfellowship فاِنثَنىso he turned
اليناtoward us وَحيّاناand greeted us تحيَّةthe greeting of ذيone possessing ودِّaffection
He saw the delightful fellowship there and turned
toward us, greeting us as an affectionate friend.
وَقالَand he said انظِمونيinclude me بينكمamong you متمتَّعاًenjoying
بهاin them مَعكمwith you بالشرwith evil (as written) منيَfrom me وَالحَمدِand praise
And said, “Include me among you, to enjoy
them with you—with evil from me, and praise.”
وَعاهَدَناand he pledged to us انthat لاnot يكدّرhe would disturb صفَوناour serenity
وَهَيهاتِand how far from possible انthat يَبقىshould remain الزَمانTime علىfaithful to العَهدِthe pledge
And he pledged to us not to disturb our serenity;
yet how far Time is from keeping its pledge!
فجمَّعناso he brought us together تجميعَthe joining of احرُفِthe letters of شملِناour union
وَفرَّقَناand he parted us تَفريقَهُhis separating of احرُفَthe letters of الوَردِthe rose
So he joined us as the letters of shamlunā, ‘our union,’ are joined,
and parted us as he parts the letters of ward, ‘rose.’
