من آل قطّانٍ عزيزٌ راحلٌ
كالبدرlike the full moon قدindeed خسفeclipsed القضاfate انوارَهُhis lights
كالبدر قد خسف القضا انوارَهُ
A beloved one of the Qattan family has departed.
A noble one from the family of Qattan is departed
Like the full moon, fate has eclipsed his radiance.
Like the full moon whose light fate has eclipsed
كانَhe was الوَحيدَthe only child ولمand did not يزلcease فيin مضجعa resting place
كانَ الوَحيدَ ولم يزل في مضجع
غيثُa shower المدامعtears والمراحمand mercies زارَهُvisited him
غيثُ المدامع والمراحم زارَهُ
He was the only child, and still lies in a resting place;
He was an only child though he still lay in bed
A shower of tears and mercies has visited him.
The rain of tears and mercy visited him
فيat التسعِnine ولّىhe departed فالشَبابso youth ينوحهُmourns him
في التسعِ ولّى فالشَباب ينوحهُ
كالجارlike a neighbor عندat البينparting يندبlaments جارَهُhis neighbor
كالجار عند البين يندب جارَهُ
At nine he departed, and youth mourns him,
At nineteen, youth mourns him
Like a neighbor lamenting his neighbor at parting.
Like a neighbor weeping for his neighbor when distant
قَدindeed كانَhad been منتظراًwaiting لهُfor him فَسَطاbut assailed القَضاfate
قَد كانَ منتظراً لهُ فَسَطا القَضا
غدراًtreacherously عليهِupon him فخيَّبَthus thwarted اِستنظارَهُits expectation
غدراً عليهِ فخيَّبَ اِستنظارَهُ
It had been waiting for him, but fate struck
He had waited for it so fate betrayed him
Him treacherously, dashing its hopes.
Deceitfully disappointing his waiting
أبقىhe left behind لوالدهِfor his father الحَزينgrieving وامهِand his mother
أبقى لوالدهِ الحَزين وامهِ
حزناًsorrow بقلبهماin both their hearts يؤَجِّجkindles نارَهُits fire
حزناً بقلبهما يؤَجِّج نارَهُ
He left his grieving father and his mother
Leaving grief in the hearts of his grieving father and mother
A sorrow in their hearts that stokes its fire.
Sorrow that keeps the fire of grief burning
وَلّىhe departed الىto دارthe abode of البقآءِeternity مغادِراًleaving behind
وَلّى الى دار البقآءِ مغادِراً
ربعَthe dwelling of الشقاmisery فيin ذيthis الحياةlife وَدارَهand its home
ربعَ الشقا في ذي الحياة وَدارَه
He departed for the abode of eternity, leaving
He left for the eternal abode abandoning
The dwelling and home of misery in this life.
The region of misery and its dwellings
فيهاin it التقىhe met ارَّختهُI recorded his date بسميهwith his namesake
فيها التقى ارَّختهُ بسميه
طوبىblessedness لِبُطرُسَfor Peter فالمسيحُfor Christ اختارَهُhas chosen him
طوبى لِبُطرُسَ فالمسيحُ اختارَهُ
There he met his namesake; I dated his passing:
There he met the date fate had written for him
Blessed is Peter, for Christ has chosen him.
Blessed is Peter for Christ chose him
