A dear one of the Hallaq family has departed.
At his death, the eyes shed their blood.
غصنٌa bough لَقَدindeed ابكىmade weep الحمائمَthe doves عندat the time ماthat
غصنٌ لَقَد ابكى الحمائمَ عند ما
قَصَفتsnapped صباهُhis youth منof المنونdeath يداهاits two hands
قَصَفت صباهُ من المنون يداها
A bough that truly made the doves weep when
death's two hands snapped his youth.
قَدindeed سارَwent جرجسJirjis نحوtoward جرجسَJirjis عمِّهِhis paternal uncle
قَد سارَ جرجس نحو جرجسَ عمِّهِ
وَالنفسand the soul عندbeside سميِّهhis namesake مثواهاits resting place
وَالنفس عند سميِّه مثواها
Jirjis has gone to Jirjis, his uncle,
and the soul's resting place is beside his namesake.
ياO تربةَearth of الغصنthe bough الرَطيبthe tender سقىmay water الحياthe rain
يا تربةَ الغصن الرَطيب سقى الحيا
ارّخmark the date بأَنوآءِwith the showers of الغمامthe clouds ثراهاits soil
ارّخ بأَنوآءِ الغمام ثراها
O earth of the tender bough, may the rain water—
mark the date—its soil with the clouds' showers.
