A grave for Mikhail Sabbagh, whom

the hands of parting snapped—a green bough.

For him, the garments were dyed a black hue,

and the eyelids’ tears a red hue.

He bore afflictions patiently and steadfastly,

and decreed that hearts should have no patience.

So he departed for Paradise, toward his namesake,

among the angels, exalted to the heights.

And showers of tears flowed over his tomb,

watering, as my chronogram records, a bough in the earth.
