لِلَّهBy God! ماأَعلَقَhow firmly attached الهوىpassion بيto me
فيin جانبthe realm of اللهوplay وَالتصابيand youthful dalliance
By God, how firmly passion clings to me
in the realm of play and youthful dalliance!
وَماand how أَشدَّintense الغَرامَardor عنديwithin me
لكلfor every مَيّاسةٍgracefully swaying كَعابِfull-breasted maiden
And how intense is my ardor
for every swaying, full-breasted maiden!
رَيّانَةِlush العِطفِof flank قدalready تَروىhas drunk its fill
كالغصنlike a bough منfrom منهَلthe spring of الرُضابِsweet saliva
Her lush flank has drunk its fill,
like a bough, from the spring of sweet saliva.
اذاwhen تَثَنَّتshe sways ثَنتshe bends قلوباًhearts
تجلُّare too great وجداًin ardor عنfor انقلابِa reversal
When she sways, she bends hearts
too deeply in love to turn away.
وانand if تَجَلَّتshe reveals herself جلَتshe brightens عيوناًeyes
بنورwith the radiance of وجهٍa face بلاwithout نِقابِa veil
And when she reveals herself, she brightens eyes
with the radiance of an unveiled face.
وانand if تفُهshe speaks شنَّفتshe delights سَماعاًthe hearing
بحسنwith the beauty of الفاظهاher words العِذابِsweet
And when she speaks, she delights the ear
with the beauty of her sweet words.
فَلاso no دَلالٌcoquetry يَذِلُّis humbled فيهِin it
صبٌّa lovesick lover غداhas become منهُbecause of it فيin عَذابِtorment
So no coquetry there humiliates
a lovesick lover whom it has left in torment;
وَلاnor نِفارُthe shying of الغَزالthe gazelle فيهاin her
عنfrom مَلَلٍboredom اوor عنfrom اضطرابِdisquiet
nor does her gazelle-like shying arise
from boredom or from disquiet.
محبُّهُone who loves it لَيسَis not بالمُحابيone showing favoritism
There, love is desirable;
its lover is not biased.
لَيسَthere is not سوىanything but الطرفthe glance فيهِin it حتىّuntil
يحلُّit is freed عنfrom شبهةa suspicion of ارتيابِdoubt
It goes no further than a glance until
it is freed from the suspicion of doubt.
وَالحُبُّand love مثلُlike الخطابspeech مِمَّنfrom one who
يُحِبُّloves مستلزِمَrequiring الجوابِa reply
And love, like speech from one
who loves, requires a reply.
فانso if أُخاطِبI address ولمand has not يُجِبنيanswered me
مُخاطَبيthe one I address تُبتُI repent عنof خطابيmy speech
So if I speak and am not answered
by the one I address, I repent of my speech.
شريعتيmy law هذِهِthis وَهَذاand this
فيin دينthe faith of اهلthe people of الهوىpassion كتابيmy book
This is my law, and this
is my book in the faith of lovers.
فدعso leave أُليthose devoted to العشقpassionate love فيin نزاعٍstrife
وَفيand in خصامٍquarrels وفيand in عتابِreproach
So leave the devotees of passion in strife,
and in quarrels, and in reproach.
يستعذِبونthey find sweet العَذابَthe torment فيهِin it
منfrom العدىenemies لاnot منfrom الصحابِfriends
They find the torment in it sweet,
from enemies, not from friends.
وَيطلِبونand they seek الرضىapproval عليهمtoward them
منfrom معشرٍa group فيin الهوىlove غِضابِangry
And they seek approval for themselves
from folk who are angry in love.
ماnot الذُلُّhumiliation واللَهِby God غيرُother than هَذاthis
اينَwhere تُرىone wonders عِزَّةُthe dignity of الشَبابِyouth
Humiliation, by God, is nothing but this.
Where, one wonders, is youth's dignity?
أَستَغفرُI seek forgiveness from اللَهَGod لَستُI am not أَرضىcontent
بَذاwith this ولاnor ذاكthat منamong طِلابيmy pursuits
I ask God's forgiveness; I am not content
with this, nor is that what I seek.
وَالحَمدُand praise لِلَّهto God إِنَّindeed نَفسيmy soul
And praise be to God: indeed, my soul
is safe from approaching humiliation.
وإِنَّنيand indeed I أَعشقlove passionately المَعانيthe inner qualities
كَعاشقlike a lover of السيفthe sword لاnot القِرابِthe scabbard
And indeed, I love the inner qualities,
like a lover of the sword, not the scabbard.
