جِسمٌa body أَخفُّlighter منthan المياهِwater وعكسُهُand its opposite
وُزِناthe two were weighed بهاin it فالكلُّso the whole يَنقُصdecreases ثقلهُits weight
A body lighter than water and its opposite
A body lighter than water, yet
Were weighed in it; their total weight decreases.
Weighed in it, all lose some weight.
وَالنقصُand the loss قدhas عدَلequaled الخَفيفَthe light one وفوقهُand beyond it
جزءٌa portion منof الثانيthe second فَيَبقىso remains فضلهُits surplus
The loss equals the lighter body's weight and, beyond that,
The loss balances the light and tops it -
A portion of the second's weight, so its surplus remains.
Part of the second remains in excess.
فَكلاهماso both of them فيin المآءِwater اثقلُheavier منهماthan both of them
وزنُthe weight الثَقيلof the heavy one اذwhen الهوآءُair محلهُits setting
Thus both together in water are outweighed
So both in water are heavier than themselves.
By the heavy body's weight when it is in air.
The weight of the heavy - air takes its place.
وَكلاهماand both of them كلٌّa whole وذلكand that جزؤُهُits part
فالجزءُso the part باتhas become يقلُّis less عنهُthan it كلهُits whole
The two together are a whole, and that is its part;
Both are wholes and this is a part of it.
So the whole has become less than its part.
The part now weighs less than the whole of it.
ومنand of الضرورةnecessity انthat يزيدis greater الجزءُthe part عنthan
كلٍّa whole بقلبهماby reversing them both فذلكso that مثلهُits equivalent
And necessarily the part must exceed
And necessarily the part exceeds
A whole when the two are reversed; it amounts to the same.
Any whole by reversing them - this is its example.
واذاand if اِعتبرتَyou consider الامرَthe matter هانbecomes easy عليكfor you انto
تُبقيهاkeep it منfrom دونwithout ثقلٍweight فابلُهُso test it
And if you consider the matter, it is easy for you to
And if you consider the matter, it is easy for you to
Keep it weightless—so put it to the test.
Keep them without any weight - so speak to him.
فَتَرىso you see بذاكby that الكلَّthe whole معدوماًnonexistent وقدthough already
كانwas الوجودُexistence بِهِwith it يَفوزُattains اقلهُits lesser part
Thus you see the whole nonexistent, although
You will then see the whole annulled, and existence
Its lesser part had enjoyed existence.
Was winning through it at its lowest.
وَلِمَنand for whoever يجيءُcomes لناto us ببرهانٍwith a proof لذاfor this
فضلٌcredit وَنشكرهُand we thank him بماwith what هوhe اهلهُdeserving of it
And whoever brings us proof of this
And whoever brings us proof of this
Deserves credit, and we thank him as he deserves.
Has favor - we thank him as befits him.
