    بين العدى لم تلقَ الّا مُنكِرا

    If you perform miracles and are

    Among foes, you meet none but a denier;

    Or if you commit outrages and are

    Among loved ones, you find no one to condemn you.

    ومِن العدى والصَحب تأخذ مَظهَرا

    Thus the true nature of deeds has no effect;

    And they take their outward guise from foes and friends,

    Like water, whose color is that of its vessel.

    And you have vessels at hand, so choose with care.

    And who is there who has no foes?

    And some of them may muster an army.

    And one of them alone is enough to plague you,

    As a mosquito does when it keeps you from sleep.

    And so the author remains ever a target,

    As though, by God, he were committing an outrage,

    Expecting the horror of what befell

    Those before him, like sheep entering a slaughterhouse,

    And as though this were a cup chilled for him

    After his toil, his journeying, and his night travel.

    Why, then, do you labor tirelessly for perfection

    Among a people who choose to fall behind?

    واربأ بنفسك أَن تُذال وتحقرا

    So break your reed pen and rest, you who have taken pains;

    And hold yourself above being debased and despised.

    Utter obscurity is more honorable in our lands

    Than fame that leaves you reviled and scorned.

    Indeed, your friends, when you commit a fault,

    Conceal it; and if you do well, they proclaim it to the world.

    As for your foes, even if you filled their eyes,

    They would cover them with their palms and say, "We see nothing."
