If people endure the harshness of a trial,

then you endure even the bitterness of endurance.

For not everyone with patience can bear its burden,

nor is everyone with patience granted a reward,

except you—may God heal you of what you complained of.

For you earn reward because you give thanks.

    You endured affliction beyond endurance,

for a long time, and won reward coupled with glory.

Yet what has passed is greater than what remains,

and had it befallen rock, it would have left its mark on the rock.

You held firm until no time for fortitude remained,

through an ordeal—God bless you for such excellence!

Let the steadfast always extol one such as you,

as they did Job in ages long gone by.

If you do not endure Time willingly,

you will endure it unwillingly—one evil upon another.

And if a man does not console himself in calamity,

then friends' consolation is a kind of idle talk.

And forgetfulness may quench the embers of his affliction,

then condolences come like someone stirring those embers.

This age has made a habit of deceiving its people,

and infected them until they were reared in deceit.

It is ever treacherous to people, yet they show

toward themselves a treachery greater still.

People have been this way since the time of Adam,

and grew worse as the years of Time mounted upon them.

A legacy we inherited—and how many traits,

fine traits of theirs, have never once come to mind!
