When the moonbird trills amid the boughs
ومعذر سلب الحدائق آسها
And the excuser robbed the gardens of their myrtles
وسائلة تذكرنا بعدن
With grace and charm she reminds us of paradise
كيف المفر وقد وافى تقاصينا
How can there be escape when our disputant
جرحته باللحاظ حين غدا
I wounded him with a glance as he passed by
يا رسولي بلغ كتابي إلى من
O my messenger, convey my letter
قد زارني من غير وعد سابق
He visited me without prior promise
يا خالق الخلق يا قهار يا أحد
O Creator of all things, O Almighty, O One
كعب جدواك هامة الكرم
The peak of your generosity is sublime
الله أكبر حسب العبد مولاه
Allah is greatest, sufficient for the servant is his Master
يا غاية السؤل والمراد
O the ultimate goal of my questions and desires
أضلني الغيى عن سبل الهدايات
Astray I was led by ignorance from the paths of guidance
نار شوقي وهول يوم بعادي
The fire of my passion and the horror of our separation
يا أرحم الراحمين العفو عن وجل
O Most Merciful of the merciful, forgive the servant
أيا رب يا الله يا بارئ النسيم
O Lord, O Allah, O Originator of the breeze
قابل النور ظلمة الحلك
The light met the darkness of space
يا مجيب الدعا وغوث الأسير
O Responder to supplication, and aid of the captive,
وليل جمعنا فيه أوصاف روضة
And a night in which we gathered descriptions of a garden
أضرم الوجد في الحشاشة نارا
The passion kindled a flame in my inner being
تراءت لعيني وهي بالشعر تحجب
She appeared before my eyes as her hair concealed her
وإذا البلابل رجعت ألحانها
When the nightingales return their melodies
وحمام حكتني في التهاب
And a dove cooed to me in fervent tones
ورند إذا ما النور كلل قضبه
When the light crowns its stalk
أجل نظرا في حسن ذاتي وبهجتي
Delay your gaze, behold my beauty and joy,
أعيذت بمسراك النجوم الغوارب
The setting stars sought refuge in your abode,
هل الشمس خيلت من خلال السحائب
Did the sun peek through the clouds
يا مليكا أخجل الشمس سنا
O luminous king who shamed the sun with your youthful face
أصبت عين المها يا موت بالرمد
My eye has been struck with blindness, oh Death, with cataracts,
أوقدت من دمع عيني في الحشا لهبا
I lit a fire with tears from my eyes in the darkness
دب بسفح الخد ورد عارض
A blush creeps over the cheek's slope,
وغزالة غازلتها فتبسمت
A gazelle I courted, she smiled
بصباح خدك أو بليل العارض
With your morning cheek or transient night
عبث الدلال بصدغه فتجعدا
The guide jested with his cheek, so it wrinkled,
يا ليل ويحك إن صبحك قد سفر
O night, alas for you, your dawn has departed
والغصن شمعه والثريا النوار
The branch is its candle, and the chandelier
وفوق بان قد والأسمر
With rosy cheek and graceful neck
ونمدح خير مرسل
We praise the best messenger
وغاية ما تأتي ولو طرت للسهى
The height of what comes to you, even if you aspire for delights
الروض زها وعارض النهر بدا
The garden is adorned and the riverbank is displayed
يا رب غزالة كشمس وضحت
O Lord of a gazelle, like a sun when it rises
والصدغ لوى سلاسل الريحان

شبهت خيلانا بخد معذبي

وسرى نبت عارض النهر

أفديه غصنا ما بدا وجهه
I offer him a branch, his face not yet seen
يا وجنة الورد وصدغ الدجى
Rose garden blushing in the dusk
شبهت فرق معذبي في فرعه
I likened my tormentors' separation in its branches
لئن طبت نفسا عن وصالي فإنني
If you are happy without my company
رضيع الضيا للبين قد طر شاربه
The infant of light has grown accustomed to separation
يا نير الخد ولا نير
O light of my cheek that has no light
عجبت وشأن محبوبي عجيب
I wondered at my beloved's way
أصبت بالعين وسحر الحدق
You have struck with a glance and the magic of eyes,
من لم ترعه صوارم الأحداق
He who has not been awed by love's sharp swords
وروضة أنف أبدى الغمام بها
A garden the clouds have revealed
جرى في سماء الدجن فلك كواكب
A vessel of stars sailed across the gloomy sky
عليك توكلي ولك افتقاري
You are my reliance, to You my need
لشاهد الدمع بالتجريح تعديل
The tears of anguish flow uninterrupted
يا بارقا يهدي سناه من دجت

No glance has pierced the eyelids drawing a rueful blade
ريم حجبت فاسفرت عن قان
A maiden unveiled and dawn disclosed
شقت يد الإصباح
The dawn's hand has torn
أقول لها وقد مزجت دموعي
I say to her, as she mixed my tears
وعاتبة تقول وقد
With reproach she says, while
ومدامة في الكاس تحسب أنها
A goblet of wine she mistakes for a rose
من روى المجد عن علا عمر
Who irrigated glory from the elevation of a lifetime
قالوا بما تلقى الإله
They said, "How do you meet God while you are disobedient and aggressive?"
لا تسألوني ما الزمان فإنه
Do not ask me what time it is, for it
سلبت أسود الغاب لما أن رنت
The dark forest lions stole a doe's bleat
وحاسب خط في المحيا
And a face drew a line in the cheek
شبهت وصلك يا نفور كبارق
I likened your affection, O aloof one, to flashes of lightning
وصلنا حبكم فقطعتمونا
We reached out to you with love, but you cut us off
شنفت بالخمراء سمعي فاغتدى

هاك يا مولاي من نظم الخلوف

والله والله والله العظيم

جرد الأفق صارم الفجر
The dawn stripped the horizon of the severity of first light
على وجنتيها الورد إن فقد الورد

والموج في لجج البحار كأنه
And the waves in the depths of the seas are like
هي زهرة للمجتني المتنشق

يا زهر روض يقتطف
O flower of the garden to be plucked
عوذتها بالمرسلات دموعي

عوذت حاجبه ذا النون بالنون

اهنأ برؤية قبر طه المرسل
I congratulate you on seeing the grave of Taha the Messenger
وكلب إذا ما قص جرة صيده
When a dog has missed his prey and sees it before him,
وبي بدر تجلى فوق غصن
A full moon appeared above a branch
يا أرحم الراحمين ارحم وجد كرما
O most Merciful of those who show mercy, have mercy and be generous,
على بابك العالي أنخت مطيتي
At your lofty door I tethered my she-camel
ألا يا فتى العليا الهمام المفضل
O you, the sublime youth, the noblest of the noble,
صن فؤادي فهو يا بدر معك
Guard my heart, for it is with you, O full moon
فاجر بالبر عادة الخضر
Make virtue your habit like the green
إني توجهت لباري الورى
I turned to the Creator of the universe
أحرق الفجر عنبر السحر
The dawn burned the amber of magic
وغيم كثيف حجب البدر خلته
Thick clouds obscured the moon that I miss
رقم الغيم على ردن الصبا

أبدر الدين لا تخشى كسوفا

What ails the anemones when the meadow dons attire
وزنج شببوا لما شجاهم
When they were smitten with longing in youth,
زارني طيف الحبيب بعدما
The specter of my beloved visited me after
يا مليكا لبابه ارتحلا
O King who left his gate
ولو عظم ووقر
If he were to revere and glorify
وشادن أبدى لنا
And cheeks that displayed for us
ويوم فاختي اللون خلنا
And on a day pale of color we strolled
طلبت الشمس لا زهر الدراري
I sought the sun, not flowers of pearls
خلت الشقائق إذ بدا في زرعه
When the cornflowers appeared in bloom
نول العافين ما شاء القدر
The fate of those who chose to flee was decreed
وبدر على غصن ضللت بحسنه
The moon's beauty led me astray
يا رب قد ساءت ظنوني إذ سجا
O Lord, my suspicions have worsened as the darkness of my misguidance has prevailed, and the dawn of guidance has disappeared.

How long will you be so aloof and unkind
أيا رباه يا غوثاه يا هو
O my Lord, O my Savior, O He
ناديت يا بدر لما
I called, "O full moon!" when
أإبراهيم لم أعرضت عني
Why, Ibrahim, have you turned away from me
في قاعة الروضة سلاح للأزهار
In the garden hall are weapons for the flowers -
بأبي الظباء الفاترات جفونا
With the languid gazelles whose eyelids are weary,
حجبوا فأي مدامع لم تهرق
They departed, so what tears were not shed
ريم أنست للصد لما نفرت
A doe accustomed to separation when she shied away
أيا خالها الشحرور في روض خدها
O her mole, the mischievous one, in the garden of her cheek
وحمام دخلناها فخلنا
And we entered a dove-cote and saw there
عرضت بها ومنزل القرآن
With it I begin, and the lodging place of the Quran—
بي شادن تم سناء وسنى
My cheeks have been afflicted with leanness and emaciation
حبيبي اسمر مخنكر
My beloved, brown-skinned and rebellious
ذكر الفؤاد حبيبه فارتاحا
The heart recalled its beloved, so it found peace,
أبحر الندى ما بال ظنك بعدما

وشادن شبهت أوصاف بهجته
The attributes of his delightful beauty
أيا من جل عن كيف وأين
O You Who is exalted above "how" and "where",
كأنما خاله المسكي حين بدا

By night that reveals her, as if the Pleiades appeared,
أرخى على الخد شعرا

وراح إذا ما المزج خاصم صرفها
When the destiny quarrels with the course of the breeze

And a young man I compared when he appeared,
ويم هاجت الأمواج فيه
The waves surged in turmoil,
في الجو كحال كم كحل من أجفان
How the air is kohl, how much kohl from eyelids,
سدلوا الشعور على غصون البان
They let down their hair over the twigs of acacia
زرت أزرتها على الأقمار
She donned her veil over the moons,
تبسم عن شذى زهر مطير
He smiled with the fragrance of a scented flower,
قم زوج ابن غمام بنت زرجون
Arise and wed the son of mist to the daughter of basil,
يا صاحب التاج والمقلد والخال
O friend of the crown, necklace, and mole
أتاج ملوك الأرض والجوهر الذي

أجال الصدغ فوق الخد ليله
He leaned his cheek upon the cheek at night
يا له من عارض راق النظر
O what a visage, alluring to behold
وبي شادن بين الحشا ولحاظه
My companion camping between the bushes and his blanket,
وبي شادن لا يخطىء الفتك لحظه
My father wields a flawless striking blade,
حسبت المدام وزهر الكمام
I deemed wine and the blooms of vines

رأى الفجر تعبير الدجى فتبسما
سلوا النار عما شب بين الأضالع
رعى الجدي المغير رياض زهر
ويوم هلت الأمطار فيه
يا جوهر البدء ومسك الختام
نسل مولانا أبي حفص عمر
لتهن شهر العيد يا مالكا
وكأنما شمس الأصيل وقد كسا
كأن النجوم خلال الدجى
الوجد كوى حشاشتي بالنار
ما فاح نشر الصبا في روضة السحر
سبلت من أجل الرسول وقوله
وكيف أقول آثامي عظام
يا أكرم العرب الكرام ومن له
لمرسل الصدغ في خديه آيات
أضاءت بك الدنيا وغاب ظلامها
غمام لثام حط عن برق مبسم
ببابك يا مختار أوقفت ضمرا
قابل الصبح الدجى فانهزما
وشاد تغنى فوق كرسي قده
أقول لوجنتي خود تجلت
وقائلة وقد رأت اصفراري
بليت بلحظ غير واف لأنني
لا ومسك اللمى وورد الخدود
جرحت خد الذي تملكني
تعذر من أحب فطاب عذري
وشادن لاح بدرا فوق غصن نقا
لواحظه والخال والصدغ والسنا
إقبل هدية مادح متشفع
غزالة الصبح تحكي نرجس الغسق
الليل سجا ووافد الصبح قضى
في وجنتها النعيم قد شب لهيب
يا أشرف مرسل ويا خير نبي
واجزل صلتي ومن بالرضوان
رسا الحب في قلبي ولم يبق مغرسا
نفسي قضت بالتأسي
لا والخدود وما بها
سألته في خده قبلة
استحى النور من سنا الفلق
واجتل زهر أنجم الفكر
حسر اللثام عن المحيا الأزهر
يا خدها وتثني قدها الألف
يا مقلة الظبي وغصن النقا
قفا نسأل الحادي عن البان والحمى
لو عشت في الحب ألف يوم
كأن شعاع الشمس عند طلوعها
كسرى الأقاح أكسى نجاشي الأدواح
والجوزا مثنى والثريا تقليد
جرى في ثغرو الأعطر

إلى باري الورى وجهت وجهي
ما جرد من معاطف الأغصان
والنوفر قد شكا إلى الغدران
البدر أضا وبالسعود اتصلا
والطل كسا عرائس البستان
يا ابهج من غدا على الناس سعوف
يا خير معد يا فتى عدنان
يا ناعم الخد بل يا ناعس الطرف
وفشت ألسن نمام السحر
ومليك حسن صان ورد خدوده
غازلني بالعيون فاحتجبت
وما بال برق الثغر في غيهب اللمى
قم أنجز الوعد يا حبيبي
قم بنا يا ظبي أنس
أفدي البدور المظهرات كمالا
وبدر في الجيد قلت لما
يا بدر تم على قضيب
في روضة وجهها وسيم
أقول لها وكأس الخد يجلى
وسرو كزنج شمروا الذيل إذ غدا
انظر إلى الجو ما أحلى شمائله
ما سل من أسود المحاجر
هلا ترى الغيث قد فاضت مآقيه
قد قلت للخال إذ عم الجمال به
وشادن أنبت في خديه ما
يا بدر يا نجم يا صباح
يا بدر هندي لحظك الحد
تنبه فداعي الطير في أيكه يشدو
أرانا الورد في حمر الخدود
سل عن ذوائبها مساحب ذيلها
وبي حاسب مثل بدر الدجى
توج بدر الماء هام الراح
وعشية خلت الهلال بأفقها
لتهن شهر الصوم يا مالكا
سبت أيدي السماء لجين شمس
ويوم أدكن الجلباب أبدى
