He kept to melancholy and grief and so

8. Taught sorrow and crying to the birds
So he lost patience and solace and thus

9. Shows ardour and borrows feelings of burning
And sickness clothed his body so he became

10. The wakefulness of his eyes being a banner
Oh my people is there no helper helping

11. Other than tears pouring forth seas
Or a brother flashing lightning to me or a friend

12. Who would guard a neighbour or heed the neighbourhood
Or a true loyal friend fulfilling a promise competing

13. To break my vow and conceal secrets
Or a friend listening to the plight of my condition

14. Thus my discourse brings joy to gatherings
What has happened, O my heart, then leave it

15. For what I had feared has come to pass
The matter is finished so resolve what you can resolve

16. For you, with estrangement the abode of reunion
Alas from separation and overflowing eyelids

17. That made the eyes and heart lost
Who is my victorious when none other than a heart

18. That died of longing and did not know deliverance
Woe to the people of passion whom they see intoxicated

19. With their passion yet they are not intoxicated
They made humiliation a law for people

20. Too proud for humiliation in passion and belittlement
Oh hard-hearted have mercy on a heart

21. That has never been wont to befriend stones
You have forgotten our vows and my heart

22. Distance only increased its reminders
How many eyelids have you clad in wakefulness

23. And hearts you have robbed of tranquility
Every day passion deals me a death blow

24. With a fire kindling in the ribs
And when darkness creeps up to overtake me

25. An arrow of love that stirs up thoughts
My night grew long and the face of my dawn did not appear

26. I wonder, will I see the darkness disappear?
If the morning were to come alive with hope

27. You would not see flowers lost in the sky
