1. Astray I was led by ignorance from the paths of guidance
When I mounted the steeds of misguidance

2. Had I been granted the gift of success
Right conduct would have steered me from the ways of ruin

3. I am the one excessive in my love of God
Woe to me! My excess led to my destruction

4. I am the evildoer, the naive liar, I am
The essence of villainy, the pillar of sin

5. What can I offer in excuse when asked
When my back is burdened with the loads of lapses?

6. What plea can I make that will stand
When arguments are made against me?

7. Oh heart! How long will you not devote
Yourself, and turn on the cradle of will?

8. Oh tongue! How long will you not guard
Against uttering that which is futile?

9. Oh eye! How long will you not refrain
From sights that are worthless visions?

10. Oh ear! How long will you not block
Hearing that which is fruitless talk?

11. Oh self! How long, and do you not know
That tomorrow is the day of reckoning?

12. Oh Most Merciful, forgive the terrified
Whose knowledge did not bar him from ignorance

13. Oh Most Merciful, pardon the abject
Whose medicine did not cure his worldly ills

14. Oh Most Merciful, rescue the drowning
Whom swimming did not save from the sea of loss

15. He obeyed the call of discord and desire, alas
How can one who obeys temptation be saved?

16. He wallowed in sins and wrongs, and who
Is saved when floundering in the sea of sin?

17. Oh woe to an evildoer, abhorred are his states
You see him in the worst of states

18. None but You can have mercy on him
So have mercy on him, O Originator of the seven heavens

19. O God's Mercy, send down on me bounty
For my domains have been seized by drought

20. O God's Mercy, send down on me favor
For deprivation has wasted my time

21. O God's Mercy, send down on me veiling
Forgiveness, for hostility has exposed my wrongs

22. Years of vanity passed like days gone by
In months I spent my youth like hours

23. Should I not lament what I wasted of my life
With tears that ignited the fires of anguish?

24. Perhaps a gentle breeze of forgiveness may blow
Dispelling sorrow, heralding joy

25. How can I not hope for God's pardon when
I have given my excuse to the Knower of secrets?

26. And I have come seeking intercession for what I gained
From the one granted intercession amongst sinners

27. Muhammad the Chosen One, the Guide, the Messenger
To all people with clear, shining verses

28. The Final One, the Particular, the Chosen
Whose claim was proven by arguments and proofs

29. The Opener, the Seal, the Ob literator
With whom prophecy was concluded with messages

30. Firm of purpose, seizer of booty
Forgiver of sins, discloser of tribulations

31. Of mighty lineage, uprooter of enmity
Auspicious, bestower of abundance

32. Revealer of wonders, victorious over regiments
Praised, elucidator of guidance

33. Treasure of beacons, proof for times to come
Key to horizons, lamp of stations

34. Possessor of miracles none before obtained
Mightiest in clear, magnificent signs

35. When he was born the stars fell from the sky
And the fires of Persia were extinguished

36. The mute beasts spoke in clear words
Proclaiming his truth with eloquent expressions

37. The small provision satisfied the army
Despite their great numbers, they feared no hunger

38. From his fingers poured clear water, scarce
Would be the Nile in times of flooding

39. The noblest if the messengers came before
And greatest if miracles are considered

40. In him combined all aspects of perfection
As in him united attributes of glory

41. If the sea obtained a part of his virtues
It would not harm the deepest souls

42. If the sun borrowed one of his beauties
The horizon would not darken with gloom

43. Purifier of hearts, elucidator of authority, moon
Exonerating speech, fragrant greetings

44. Adorned in the raiment of victory, assuming
The Spirit and Self with Mightiest Honor

45. He continues to strive as mountains yield to him
Against enemies with secrets of the unseen

46. Until the egg of Islam was protected in its nest
By his piercing, resolute lances

47. The light of the day of religion shone bright
The sun of guidance emerged, and the night of misguidance faded

48. Amongst the multitude who reaped the harvest of error
With the blades of their glances and piercing white swords

49. Clad in the armor of resolution on a day when
The arenas of religion awoke from slumber of raids

50. And wearing the garb of humiliation, each one
Thrown down by the foes with sharp swords

51. Achieving glory and high rank with their resolve
And noble lineage of lofty, refined ancestry

52. Inscribing with lance-pens lines of courage
When arms wrote down the prose of calamity

53. Without complaining or being complained against, in war
Made them drink from cups of annihilation

54. Their lightning in battle did not thunder in the sky
Except to revive and dress wounds

55. With him they were the best of mankind
And were characterized, when tried, with noble lineages

56. The exalted, proud ancestry of princes
The clear text of the book, they are the noblest masters

57. Radiant lights, saturating lights
Floods of bounty, shining moons

58. Standing lions, lions in battlefields
Massive mountains, lions of the jungle

59. As if for the glory they built a lofty house
The Prophet's light, therein a lantern niche

60. He is the Beloved whose sole purpose
Was important affairs from all people

61. He is the Noble mentioned on the Day
Of Judgment, for tremendous sins

62. I strive to attain his favour hoping
To achieve what I wish of sweet gifts

63. So I may attain through praising him favour
Whose attainment requires the sea of nobility

64. O people of the Messenger convey what I direct
To the Intercessor hoped for calamities

65. And inform mankind that I am a guest who
Fears no distress in erasure or record

66. Encircled with gifts, loudly singing praise
Forgetting doves in lyrical cooing

67. I have composed this ode of praise hoping
To attain success and escape misfortunes

68. So I win a sublime prize though I am
A fearful sinner hoping for your noble hands

69. How can I not hope for such triumph when
My sincerity in praising him is a secret of love?

70. In my dream, he appeared with every
Attribute of perfection and signal of beauty

71. He stretched out his hands to me, then welcomed me
Good tidings emanating from him, promising bliss

72. O Most Generous of Messengers in lineage and kingdom
And most noble of mankind, past and future

73. I praised you hoping to free myself
From associating partners with God, my sins, and lapses

74. I did not praise you with my verses
But praised your sublime qualities through verses

75. Intercede with your favour for his wrongs, and who
Hopes for intercession but for crimes?

76. O Lord, be generous to Uthman, my master
And protect him from the evils of afflictions

77. Aid him with a clear, manifest victory
And be his aid in dire, weighty affairs

78. Protect him from the deceit of aggressors and enviers
As you have protected the people of Your care

79. Forgive him, pardon him, and grant him favour
By which eternity in the abode of nobility is attained

80. Guard for him the abode of Islam, and protect with him
The fortresses of the kingdom from evils of harm

81. So religion attains honour and tranquility
And disbelief falls into humiliation and confusion

82. Protect the sanctuary of your fortunate deputies
And oversee the stewardship, O Master of fortune

83. Gaze upon him with an eye of affection and generosity
And grant him your munificence, O Giver of gifts

84. Sanctify him with Your purest eternal prayer
The best of men, hoped for in intercession

85. The hand of youth has not brandished a spear
And the charming have not bent the boughs of sprouts

86. Nor have the gazelles of dawn grazed
In the crescents of homesteads
