1. His smile revealed pearls arrayed,
And the dawn of his visage shed radiance.

١. تَبَسَّمَ عَنْ سَنَا دُرّ نَظِيمِ
وَأسفرَ عَنْ ضِيَا صُبْحٍ وَسِيمِ

2. His slender form swayed like a willow wand
As he flirted through a diaphanous veil.

٢. وَمَايَسَ عَنْ قَوَامِ قضيبِ بَانٍ
وَغَازَلَ عَنْ لحاظ رَشًا رخيمِ

3. The eyes of a gazelle captivated my heart,
So hear the truth from one heartsick and frail.

٣. غزَالٌ غَازَلَتْ عَيْنَاهُ قَلْبِي
فَخُذْ خَبَرَ الصِّحَاحِ عَنْ السَّقِيمِ

4. When he appeared, my beauty was outshone -
What wonder in such a noble full moon!

٤. وَجَادَ بِفِتْنَتِي لَمَّا تَبَدَّى
فَوَا عَجَبَاهُ مِنْ بدرٍ كَرِيمِ

5. His cheek took on the hue of a blushing rose,
Did you ever see a rose in hellfire bloom?

٥. تَضَرَّجَ خَدّهُ فَأرَاكَ وَرْداً
وَهَلْ أبْصَرْتَ وَرْداً في جَحِيمِ

6. With that face he torments me – marvel how
One suffers bliss in the heat of his doom!

٦. وَعَذَّبَنِي بِهِ فَاعجبْ لِخَدّ
يُعَذّبُ فِي لظَاهُ بِالنَّعِيمِ

7. The breeze of his charm called out to my mind,
“I am maddened by the love of this breeze!”

٧. رَخِيمُ الدَّلّ عَقْلِي فِيهِ نَادَى
أنَا بِاللَّهِ وَالدَّلّ الرَّخِيمِ

8. When his glances speak to the heart within,
Ask not after the silent heart in me.

٨. إذَا مّا كَلَّمَتْ عَيْنَاهُ قَلْبِي
فَلاَ تَسْألْ عَنِ الْقَلْبِ الْكَلِيمِ

9. Those are the eyes that seduce whom they gaze on,
Beware the sorcery of their art supreme!

٩. هِيَ الالحَاظُ تُغْرِي مَنْ غَزَتْهُ
فَحَاذِرْ فِتْنَةَ السِّحْرِ العَظِيمِ

10. Erect of stature, he bent his slender frame
To deftly stab with the upright spear.

١٠. قَوِيمُ القَدّ هَزَّ العِطْفَ كَيْمَا
يُجِيدَ الطَعنَ بِالرّمحِ القَوِيمِ

11. His cheeks say “Come!” at the high recess,
To the consecrated rock amid ruins.

١١. تَقُولُ الْوَجْنَتَانِ لَنَا هَلُمُّوا
إلَى الحَجَرِ المُقَبَّلِ فِي الحَطِيمِ

12. The straightness of his brow guides us
Into dangerous paths blow adversely.

١٢. وَتَهْدِينَا اسْتِقَامَةُ عَارِضَيْهِ
فَنُفْتَنَ فِي صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمِ

13. I told his kind glance of my condition -
What can the frail one do for one so frail?

١٣. شَكَوْتُ لِطَرْفِهِ السَّاجِي سَقَامِي
وَمَا يُغْنِي السَّقِيمُ عَنِ السَّقِيمِ

14. My heart inclined toward the sweetness of his memory
As the spear inclines along the breeze.

١٤. وَمَالَ لِطِيبِ ذِكْرَاهُ فُؤَادِي
كَمَا مَالَ القَضِيبُ مَعَ النَّسِيمِ
