1. Wherever he went, the gazelle of Kenan greeted him,
Praised him, sacrificed itself for him.
١. وَشَادِنٍ مَا رَنَا إلاّ وَغَازَلَهُ
ظَبْيُ الكِنَاسِ وَحَيَّاهُ وَفَدَّاهُ
2. The wind was his perfume, musk his scent,
Myrtle his cheek, rose his temple.
٢. الرَّاحُ رِيقَتُهُ وَالمِسْكُ نَكْهَتُهُ
وَالآسُ عَارضُهُ وَالوَرْدُ خَدَّاهُ
3. Flowers blossomed for him, pearls adorned him,
Loquats tendered him, pomegranates endowed him.
٣. وَالزَّهْرُ مَبْسَمُهُ وَالدُّرُّ منطقهُ
وَالبَانُ عِطْفَاهُ وَالرُّمَّانُ نَهْدَاهُ
4. The night was his veil, dawn his rising,
The moon and sun through it all his servants.
٤. وَاللَّيْلُ طرتُّهُ وَالصُّبْحُ طلعتُهُ
والبدرُ والشمسُ في الحاليْنِ عَبْداهُ
5. For him the gazelle was sick with love, and all the people of the neighborhood -
Each dead person you saw was his ransom.
٥. ظَبْيٌ به هامَ أهلُ الحيّ قَاطبةً
فكلُّ مَيْتٍ تَرَاهُ فَهْوَ أرْدَاهُ
6. My heart says his charming gaze has bewitched me.
Oh, if only I knew who had cast that spell!
٦. يقولُ قلبي عَدَانِي سحرُ نَاظِرِهِ
يا ليتَ شعرِيَ مَنْ بالسَّحرِ أعْداهُ
7. No - may God take my heart in its love for him.
For the state of love, its results and beginnings are his.
٧. لاَ واخذ اللهُ قَلْبِي فِي محبتهِ
إذْ حالة الحب عقبَاه ومبُدَاهُ
