ذي المعالي فليعلون من تعالى
They exalt themselves, let them know who truly exalts
إن يكن صبر ذي الرزية فضلا
If the patience of the resolute is excellence
إن كنت عن خير الأنام سائلا
If you seek the best of all men
لئن مر بالفسطاط عيشي فقد حلا
Though my powers are great
أتاني عنك قول فازدهاني
A saying about you came to me, so I was overjoyed,
الرأي قبل شجاعة الشجعان
Opinion before the bravery of the brave
باد هواك صبرت أم لم تصبرا
My longing has endured—or has it failed to endure?—your parting
أفيقا خمار الهم نغصني الخمرا
The wine of sorrows intoxicated me, not the forbidden drink,
على قدر أهل العزم تأتي العزائم
According to the resolve of the resolute ones, resolutions come,
في الخد أن عزم الخليط رحيلا
In cheek decided the mixture to depart
لا تحسبوا ربعكم ولا طلله
Do not think your encampment or your ruins
مالنا كلنا جو يا رسول
What ails us all, O Messenger
أي محل أرتقي
Where can I climb
حاشى الرقيب فخانته ضمائره
The censor betrayed him, so his conscience stung him
جاء نيروزنا وأنت مراده
Our New Year came while you were its purpose
لقد حازني وجد بمن حازه بعد
Longing has saddened me for one longed for by remoteness
اليوم عهدكم فأين الموعد
Today you promised, so where is the promise?
ضروب الناس عشاق ضروبا
People are lovers of diverse passions,
ليس العليل الذي حماه في الجسد
The sick is not who fever grips his body
ألا كل ماشية الخيزلى
Behold, all cattle of el-Khaizuran
أقل أنل أن صن احمل عل سل أعد
I see light in your darkness
تضاحك منا دهرنا لعتابنا
Our time mocks us for blaming it
أفاعل بي فعال الموكس الزاري
Transgressors commit immoral acts,
أبعين مفتقر إليك نظرتني
With yearning eyes I looked to you,
أرى الشطرنج لو كانت رجالا
If chessmen could but speak and fight,
بدر فتى لو كان من سؤآله
A full moon is he; were his generosity
كفى بك داء أن ترى الموت شافيا
It is enough of an illness that you see death as a healer,
مغاني الشعب طيبا في المغاني
The songs of the common people are good songs
زال النهار ونور منك يوهمنا
The day has passed, yet your light still deludes us
كتمت حبك حتى منك تكرمة
I kept my love for you a secret even from you as a courtesy
ملومكما يجل عن الملام
Blameworthy are you though blame recoils from you,
حتام نحن نساري النجم في الظلم
We ride the stars in darkness
أعن إذني تهب الريح رهوا
So my soul can sense when gentle winds breathe free
فراق ومن فارقت غير مذمم
Parting, and the one I parted from was not disgraced
نرى عظما بالبين والصد أعظم
We see greatness in the evident, and estrangement is greater
عذلت منادمة الأمير عواذلي
The Prince's boon companions chide me for drinking
ألا لا أرى الأحداث حمدا ولا ذما
Alas! I see not the events either praised or blamed,
حييت من قسم وأفدي المقسما
You were greeted with an oath, and I ransom the swearer
ضيف ألم برأسي غير محتشم
A guest has squeezed my head without modesty
قد سمعنا ما قلت في الأحلام
We heard what you said in dreams
عقبى اليمين على عقبى الوغى ندم
My right foot regrets following my reckless left
أبعد نأي المليحة البخل
The stinginess of the fair one is distant from me
كدعواك كل يدعي صحة العقل
They all claim you lack reason
إثلث فإنا أيها الطلل
One third, for lo! O ruins
لك يا منازل في القلوب منازل
To you, O dwellings in hearts, dwellings
قد أبت بالحاجة مقضية
My need fulfilled is destiny's decree
محبي قيامي ما لذلكم النصل
My rising lovers, why do you attack me
لا تحسن الوفرة حتى ترى
Abundance does not become you until it is seen
قد بلغت الذي أردت من البر
You have achieved the righteousness you sought
أعلى الممالك ما يبنى على الأسل
The highest kingdoms are built on foundations,
نعد المشرفية والعوالي
We prepare the heights and summits
وجدت المدامة غلابة
I found the wine oppressive
أركائب الأحباب إن الأدمعا
The ships of loved ones, truly the tears
تذكرت ما بين العذيب وبارق
I remember what's between Al-‘Udhayb and Bāriq
لعينيك ما يلقى الفؤاد وما لقي
For your eyes what the heart has found and what it did find
أرق على أرق ومثلي يأرق
Sleepless night upon sleepless night for one like me
بأبي من وددته فافترقنا
By the one I loved, we parted
لا الحلم جاد به ولا بمثاله
Not a dream fulfilled nor ideal attained
أيدري الربع أي دم أراقا
Does the desert know whose blood it shed
لجنية أم غادة رفع السجف
For a flirtatious girl or a singing gazelle was the curtain raised
به وبمثله شق الصفوف
With it and its like the ranks were cloven,
كفرندي فرند سيفي الجراز
My sword, my dear friend, is the weapon of warriors
ألا أذن فما أذكرت ناسي
Shall I not call though you forget the intimates?
أطاعن خيلا من فوارسها الدهر
I storm the cavalry of time alone
أفكر في ادعائهم قريشا
I think of their claim, Quraish,
إذا لم تجد ما يبتر الفقر قاعدا
If poverty sits beside you, do not sit
رضاك رضاي الذي أوثر
Your pleasure is my pleasure that I prefer
أرى ذلك القرب صار ازورارا
I see that closeness has become rare
طوال قنا تطاعنها قصار
Long lances assail her, yet the short ones defame her,
لقيت العفاة بامالها
You met the barefoot with their hopes
أزائر يا خيال أم عائد
Visions, are you returning or going?
سر حل حيث تحله النوار
The secret unfolds where the lights illuminate,
حسم الصلح ما اشتهته الأعادي
Reconciliation has settled what the enemies desired,
أما الفراق فإنه ما أعهد
Parting is nothing new to me
أحاد أم سداس في أحاد
Alone or in a group of six in solitude
إن القوافي لم تنمك وإنما
The rhymes did not make you drowsy, rather
أهلا بدار سباك أغيدها
Welcome to a house whose inhabitants I lament,
جارية ما لجسمها روح
A doll without a soul
ذي الأرض عما أتاها الأمس غانية
The land he comes to is singing with joy,
تعرض لي السحاب وقد قفلنا
The cloud turned against me as we were turning back
يا أخت خير أخ يا بنت خير أب
O sister of the best brother, o daughter of the best father
بأبي الشموس الجانحات غواربا
With the suns setting their wings aflutter
أحسن ما يخضب الحديد به
The best with which iron is dyed
أسامري ضحكة كل راء
My friend, your words cut deep
لقد نسبوا الخيام إلى علاء
They attributed Khayyam to Ala
أما ترى ما أراه أيها الملك
Do you not see what I see, O King
لكل امرئ من دهره ما تعودا
Each person is accustomed to his own time,
أغالب فيك الشوق والشوق أغلب
I am overwhelmed by longing, and longing overwhelms me,
مبيتي من دمشق على فراش
My night in Damascus, on a bed
إلى أي حين أنت في زي محرم
How long will you remain forbidden fruit,
يا من رأيت الحليم وغدا
O you whom I saw the forbearing one and tomorrow
يا أكرم الناس في الفعال
O most generous of men in deeds
أي شعري نظرت فيه لضب

الحب ما منع الكلام الألسنا

عواذل ذات الخال في حواسد
The coquettish one with the mole incites jealousy in me
وفاؤكما كالربع أشجاه طاسمه
Your loyalty is like a spring whose branches the storm rends
روينا يا ابن عسكر الهماما
We have narrated, O son of the brave leader,
إذا كان مدح فالنسيب المقدم
If it is praise, then lineage is foremost
لهوى النفوس سريرة لا تعلم
The passions of souls hold a secret that's not known
أعددت للغادرين أسيافا
I have prepared swords for the deserters
إني لأعلم واللبيب خبير
Indeed I know, and the wise one is aware,
خذ في البكا إن الخليط مقوض
Take to weeping, for mingling is destructive,
زعم المقيم بكوتكين بأنه
The resident of Kokotkin claimed that he
عزيز أسى من داؤه الحدق النجل
The beloved's sorrow is dear, whose malady is longing eyes,
يا آل حيدرة المعفر خدهم
O people of Haydara, their cheeks smeared with dust
سقاني الخمر قولك لي بحقي
The wine of your words intoxicated me, though their taste
ألا لا خلق أشجع من حسين
None braver than Hussein there is,
أين أزمعت أيهذا الهمام
Where are you headed, O noble soul?
إنما بدر بن عمار سحاب
Badr bin Ammar is but clouds
جزى عربا أمست ببلبيس ربها
Her Lord has rewarded the Arabs for spending their night in wakefulness
عش ابق اسم سد قد جد مر انه رف اسر نل
Live, my name is already engraved. Though adversity may strive, as long as passions survive, this prayer needs no vocable sound
عذيري من عذارى من أمور
My excuse, from the excuses of affairs
وجارية شعرها شطرها
A girl with hair split in two
عذل العواذل حول قلب التائه
The reproaches of reproachers surround the heart of the wanderer
أجارك يا أسد الفراديس مكرم
Your protection, O lion of paradises, is honorable
غيري بأكثر هذا الناس ينخدع
Others are more easily deceived than most people
إنما أحفظ المديح بعيني
I memorize praise with my eyes,
لهذا اليوم بعد غد أريج
For this day after tomorrow's fragrant dawn
شغلي عن الربع أن أسائله
My preoccupation from the quarters is to ask about them
قد شغل الناس كثرة الأمل
People have been preoccupied by abundant hopes,
ألذ من المدام الخندريس
Sweeter than honeyed wine
ومنتسب عندي إلى من أحبه
And ascribing to me one whom I love
أفاضل الناس أغراض لذا الزمن
The best of people are but means in this age
أود من الأيام مالا توده
I prefer days that you do not like,
وشادن روح من يهواه في يده
The spirit of the one who loves Him is in His hand
فديناك أهدى الناس سهما إلى قلبي
You gifted the best of men an arrow into my heart
أمن ازديارك في الدجى الرقباء
Do the lofty ones fear your disdain in the dark night
أرى حللا مطواة حسانا
I see robes, beautifully folded,
مجدولة في حسنها
Majdoolah in her beauty
وسوداء منظوم عليها لآلئ
With dark braided hair adorned with pearls
نار الذراية من لساني تقتدح
The fire of passion blazes from my tongue
جللا كما بي فليك التبريح
Glory as my house, so let there be congratulations,
أباعث كل مكرمة طموح
I send forth every ambitious spirit
إيها أتاك الحمام فاخترمك
The pigeons came flocking to you, offending you,
غير مستنكر لك الإقدام
Without blame, I venture forth
ذكر الصبى ومراتع الآرام
The memory of childhood and abodes of tranquility
لا خيل عندك تهديها ولا مال
You have no horses to gift nor wealth,
أماتكم من قبل موتكم الجهل
Ignorance killed you before your death
قالوا لنا مات إسحاق فقلت لهم
They said to us Isaac died so I said to them
أحب امرئ حبت الأنفس
I love a man whose love fills souls
أنشر الكباء ووجه الأمير
I spread the wine cups and the prince's face
زعمت أنك تنفي الظن عن أدبي
You claimed that you deny any suspicion about my manners,
بسيطة مهلا سقيت القطارا
O Basiyta, slowly the train passed by
أريقك أم ماء الغمامة أم خمر
Is it your saliva or the water of a cloud
بكتب الأنام كتاب ورد
A book has come to us, all people,
أحلما نرى أم زمانا جديدا
Dreams we see or a new era,
محمد بن زريق ما نرى أحدا
Muhammad ibn Zuriq, we see no one
فارقتكم فإذا ما كان عندكم
I left you, so if it was
كم قتيل كما قتلت شهيد
How many slain like me were martyred,
أتنكر يا ابن إسحاق إخائي
Do you deny, O son of Isaac, my brotherhood
أتراها لكثرة العشاق
Does she think, for the abundance of lovers,
وذات غدائر لا عيب فيها
With languid eyes that held no blemish
ترك مدحيك كالهجاء لنفسي
I left praising you like slander to myself
يا ذا المعالي ومعدن الأدب
O you of high morals and the source of courtesy
يستعظمون أبياتا نأمت بها
They marvel at verses with which I consoled
بم التعلل لا أهل ولا وطن
Why make excuses - no family, no homeland
عدوك مذموم بكل لسان
Your enemy is blamed by every tongue,
لأحبتي أن يملأوا بالصافيات الأكوبا
For my loved ones to fill
وحبيب أخفوه منى نهارا
A lover they hid from me by day
أدنى ابتسام منك تحيا القرائح
The slightest smile from you brings life to feelings
ما أنا والخمر وبطيخة
I am not one for wine and watermelon
لعيني كل يوم منك حظ
My eyes have their share of you every day
عيد بأية حال عدت يا عيد
The feast, in what state have you returned, O feast?
فهمت الكتاب أبر الكتب
I understood the Book, the most righteous of books,
ألا ما لسيف الدولة اليوم عاتبا
Alas! Why does the sword of the state reproach me today?
ما سدكت علة بمورود
No affliction befell a noble man like Taghlib bin Dawud
أنبئت أن سخيف العقل قال لكم
I was told that a fool said to you all
أنصر بجودك ألفاظا تركت بها
With your support I left behind in East and West
يقاتلني عليك الليل جدا
The night battles me so hard for your sake
أيا ما أحيسنها مقلة
Oh how graceful when she sways
أبا عبد الإله معاذ إني
O Abdu Al-Ilah Mu'adh, I am
أحق دار بأن تسمى مباركة
Is there a home more deserving to be called blessed,
أتنكر ما نطقت به بديها
Do you deny what I have openly declared?
رويدك أيها الملك الجليل
Go gently, O noble king
الحزن يقلق والتجمل يردع
Worry disturbs while composure holds back,
من الجآذر في زي الأعاريب
Who is the roused one in the garb of nomads
لا افتخار إلا لمن لا يضام
None but the tireless champion merits praise,
ليالي بعد الظاعنين شكول
Nights after the wailers are long
معاذ ملاذ لزواده
Mu'adh is a refuge for his intimates
أغلب الحيزين ما كنت فيه
Most of the space you once occupied
يقل له القيام على الرؤوس
Standing tall is hard for one
بيدي أيها الأمير الأريب
In my hands, O dubious prince
يؤمم ذا السيف آماله
He who wields the sword fulfills his hopes
أتظعن يا قلب مع من ظعن
Does my heart grieve with the one who grieves
وتركت مدحي للوصي تعمدا
I left off praising the guardian deliberately
اخترت دهماءتين يا مطر
I have chosen two darknesses, O rain
أريك الرضا لو أخفت النفس خافيا
I show you contentment though the soul hides discontent,
إن الأمير أدام الله دولته
The prince - may God prolong his rule -
أقصر فلست بزائدي ودا
You gave too little, you are not my friend
تجف الأرض من هذا الرباب
The earth becomes dry of this downpour
المجلسان على التمييز بينهما
The two councils are unable to distinguish between them
رأيتك توسع الشعراء نيلا
I saw you enrich the poets lavishly
منى كن لي أن البياض خضاب
Wishes were that for me whiteness is dye
بقية قوم آذنوا ببوار
The remnant of a people who announced ruin
أبلى الهوى أسفا يوم النوى بدني
My body wasted away the day I resolved to love
تهنا بصور أم نهنئها بك
Should we congratulate you on the images, or should we congratulate the images on you?
أصبحت تأمر بالحجاب لخلوة
You now command that there be a veil for intimacy

أيا خدد الله ورد الخدود
O He who shaped the cheeks and returned the rosiness,
أنا عين المسود الجحجاح
I am the eye of the blackened, unlucky one
هو البين حتى ما تأنى الحزائق
He is evident until the meadows appeared
إنما التهنئات للأكفاء ولمن يدني من البعداء
Congratulations are for equals,
إني لغير صنيعة لشكور
Indeed I do not complain of the doing of one who is ungrateful
وطائرة تتبعها المنايا
A plane, pursued by doom,
ماذا يقول الذي يغني
What does he who sings say
أحيا وأيسر ما قاسيت ما قتلا
The easiest and happiest of what I endured was that which killed me,
كفي أراني ويك لومك ألوما
Enough of my blame while I blame you,
بكيت يا ربع حتى كدت أبكيكا
I wept, O dwelling, until I almost made you weep,
برجاء جودك يطرد الفقر
By your generous grace, poverty is banished
قضاعة تعلم أني الفتى الـلذي

فعلت بنا فعل السماء بأرضه

مضى الليل والفضل الذي لك لا يمضي
The night has passed, but your virtues do not fade away,

أهون بطول الثواء والتلف
I care not for captivity’s pains, my friend,
لو كان ذا الآكل أزوادنا
Had this devourer of our provisions been
وصفت لنا ولم نره سلاحا
دروع لملك الروم هذي الرسائل
من الشوق والوجد المبرح أنني
لا عبت بالخاتم إنسانة
لي منصب العرب البيض المصاليت
وبنية من خيزران ضمنت
ماذا الوداع وداع الوامق الكمد
نال الذي نلت منه مني
الخيل والليل والبيداءُ تعرفني
أآمد هل ألم بك النهار

لم لا يغاث الشعر وهو يصيح

لئن تك طيئ كانت لئاما
قالوا ألم تكنه فقلت لهم
الناس ما لم يروك أشباه
أنا بالوشاة إذا ذكرتك أشبه
صحب الناس قبلنا ذا الزمانا
من أية الطرق يأتي نحوك الكرم
قد علم البين منا البين أجفانا
يا بدر إنك والحديث شجون
ثياب كريم ما يصون حسانها
نزور ديارا ما نحب لها مغنى
يذكرني فاتكا حلمه
أما في هذه الدنيا كريم
إذا غامرت في شرف مروم
ما نقلت في مشيئة قدما
فؤاد ما تسليه المدام
أحق عاف بدمعك الهمم
ملامي النوى في ظلمها غاية الظلم
إذا ما شربت الخمر صرفا مهنأ
أيا راميا يصمي فؤاد مرامه
أراع كذا كل الملوك همام
المجد عوفي إذ عوفيت والكرم
أنا منك بين فضائل ومكارم
أتحلف لا تكلفني مسيرا
أتاني كلام الجاهل ابن كيغلغ
قفا تريا ودقي فهاتا المخايل
يا أيها الملك الذي ندماؤه
لم تر من نادمت إلاكا
ملث القطر أعطشها ربوعا
شوقي إليك نفى لذيذ هجوعي
حشاشة نفس ودعت يوم ودعوا

أنوك من عبد ومن عرسه
هذي برزت لنا فهجت رسيسا
أظبية الوحش لولا ظبية الأنس
ووقت وفى بالدهر لي عند واحد
لا تنكرن رحيلي عنك في عجل
غاضت أنامله وهن بحور
الصوم والفطر والأعياد والعصر
أمساور أم قرن شمس هذا
وشامخ من الجبال أقود
أمن كل شيء بلغت المرادا
وزيارة عن غير موعد
فدتك الخيل وهي مسومات
لنا ملك لا يطعم النوم همه
لما نسبت فكنت ابنا لغير أب
آخر ما الملك معزى به
ما أنصف القوم ضبه وأمه الطرطبه
الطيب مما غنيت عنه
ألم تر أيها الملك المرجى
لأي صروف الدهر فيه نعاتب
أيدري ما أرابك من يريب
فديناك من ربع وإن زدتنا كربا
لا يحزن الله الأمير فإنني
القلب أعلم يا عذول بدائه
