1. Badr bin Ammar is but clouds
Bearing reward and punishment rain.

2. Badr is but grace and gifts,
And death, and pierce of lance, and strike of sword.

3. Naught allures the eyes but his praise—
Arms exerted themselves in his deeds, necks blamed him.

4. Not thereby he killed his foes, but
He fears breaking what wolves hope.

5. So he has the awe of the peerless one,
And the generosity of the hoped-for, the fearless one.

6. Piercer of horsemen through the pupils—
Clamor of war to the sun a mask.

7. Rouser of the soul to dreadful horrors
From which no soul that meets them returns.

8. By my father, your wind—not our narcissi!
And your tales—not this wine!

9. It is no disgrace if you displayed
An uncatchable lead before the swift sand-riders.
