1. If it is praise, then lineage is foremost
Every eloquent one who recites coveted poetry
١. إِذا كانَ مَدحٌ فَالنَسيبُ المُقَدَّمُ
أَكُلُّ فَصيحٍ قالَ شِعراً مُتَيَّمُ
2. Love for the son of Abd Allah is more right for he
With him beautiful mention begins and ends
٢. لَحُبُّ اِبنِ عَبدِ اللَهِ أَولى فَإِنَّهُ
بِهِ يُبدَءُ الذِكرُ الجَميلُ وَيُختَمُ
3. I obeyed passions before my eyes could covet
A spectacle they would fall short of and hold in awe
٣. أَطَعتُ الغَواني قَبلَ مَطمَحِ ناظِري
إِلى مَنظَرٍ يَصغُرنَ عَنهُ وَيَعظُمُ
4. The sword of the state fell upon the ages entirely
It folds them in their joints and holds them together
٤. تَعَرَّضَ سَيفُ الدَولَةِ الدَهرَ كُلَّهُ
يُطَبِّقُ في أَوصالِهِ وَيُصَمِّمُ
5. So it prevailed even over the sun in its rule
And its mark appeared even on the full moon
٥. فَجازَ لَهُ حَتّى عَلى الشَمسِ حُكمُهُ
وَبانَ لَهُ حَتّى عَلى البَدرِ مَيسَمُ
6. It is as if the enemies in their lands are his deputies
If he wishes they grab it or if he wishes they submit
٦. كَأَنَّ العِدا في أَرضِهِم خُلَفاؤهُ
فَإِن شاءَ حازوها وَإِن شاءَ سَلَّموا
7. None write to him but the noble scribes
None are messengers but Thursday's red camels
٧. وَلا كُتبَ إِلّا المَشرَفِيَّةُ عِندَهُ
وَلا رُسُلٌ إِلّا الخَميسُ العَرَمرَمُ
8. So none who has a hand withheld aid from him
Nor did any who has a mouth withhold thanks from him
٨. فَلَم يَخلُ مِن نَصرٍ لَهُ مَن لَهُ يَدٌ
وَلَم يَخلُ مِن شُكرٍ لَهُ مَن لَهُ فَمُ
9. His name did not fail to adorn a pulpit
Nor did a dinar or dirham fail to circulate
٩. وَلَم يَخلُ مِن أَسمائِهِ عودُ مِنبَرٍ
وَلَم يَخلُ دينارٌ وَلَم يَخلُ دِرهَمُ
10. Blows with nothing between the two swords but narrowness
Insightful with nothing between the two brave ones but darkness
١٠. ضُروبٌ وَما بَينَ الحُسامَينِ ضَيِّقٌ
بَصيرٌ وَما بَينَ الشُجاعَينِ مُظلِمُ
11. The stars of meteor showers compete each night
With stars whose flowers and buds are from him
١١. تُباري نُجومَ القَذفِ في كُلِّ لَيلَةٍ
نُجومٌ لَهُ مِنهُنَّ وَردٌ وَأَدهَمُ
12. Of champions he undertakes what no other undertakes
And of lofty aspirations what no other aspires to
١٢. يَطَأنَ مِنَ الأَبطالِ مَن لا حَمَلنَهُ
وَمِن قِصَدِ المَرّانِ ما لا يُقَوَّمُ
13. For they are honey to the lords in goodness
And foam on the water for the crocodiles
١٣. فَهُنَّ مَعَ السيدانِ في البَرِّ عُسَّلٌ
وَهُنَّ مَعَ النينانِ في الماءِ عُوَّمُ
14. They are an eager she-camel among the gazelles in the valley
And protective owls for the eagles in the nest
١٤. وَهُنَّ مَعَ الغِزلانِ في الوادِ كُمَّنٌ
وَهُنَّ مَعَ العِقبانِ في النيقِ حُوَّمُ
15. When people suffer adversity through them
And their claws his adversaries are crushed
١٥. إِذا جَلَبَ الناسُ الوَشيجَ فَإِنَّهُ
بِهِنَّ وَفي لَبّاتِهِنَّ يُحَطَّمُ
16. Known for his conquest, peace, and pilgrimage
And for giving, praise, glory, and might
١٦. بِغُرَّتِهِ في الحَربِ وَالسِلمِ وَالحِجا
وَبَذلِ اللُها وَالحَمدِ وَالمَجدِ مُعلَمُ
17. Even those who hate him acknowledge his merit
And those who do not pray for him pray for his good fortune
١٧. يُقِرُّ لَهُ بِالفَضلِ مَن لا يَوَدُّهُ
وَيَقضي لَهُ بِالسَعدِ مَن لا يُنَجِّمُ
18. He triumphed over days until I thought
Time would demand repayment from him, past and future
١٨. أَجارَ عَلى الأَيّامِ حَتّى ظَنَنتُهُ
تُطالِبُهُ بِالرَدِّ عادٌ وَجُرهُمُ
19. How astray is this wind, what does it want of him?
And this torrent, guiding it, what does it accomplish?
١٩. ضَلالاً لِهَذي الريحِ ماذا تُريدُهُ
وَهَدياً لِهَذا السَيلِ ماذا يُؤَمِّمُ
20. Did not the twisting that aimed at bending us
Inform it about you, O chipped and scarred iron?
٢٠. أَلَم يَسأَلِ الوَبلُ الَّذي رامَ ثَنيَنا
فَيُخبِرَهُ عَنكَ الحَديدُ المُثَلَّمُ
21. And when the clouds confronted you in their direction
They met you higher than them in pride and nobility
٢١. وَلَمّا تَلَقّاكَ السَحابُ بِصَوبِهِ
تَلَقّاهُ أَعلى مِنهُ كَعباً وَأَكرَمُ
22. So it engaged a face long engaging armor
And wet clothes long wet with blood
٢٢. فَباشَرَ وَجهاً طالَما باشَرَ القَنا
وَبَلَّ ثِياباً طالَما بَلَّها الدَمُ
23. Some rain follows some from Syria
The last following the first and the learned succeeding
٢٣. تَلاكَ وَبَعضُ الغَيثِ يَتبَعُ بَعضَهُ
مِنَ الشَأمِ يَتلو الحاذِقَ المُتَعَلِّمُ
24. So it visited those visited by your horses at their graves
And longing that you harbor longed for it
٢٤. فَزارَ الَّتي زارَت بِكَ الخَيلُ قَبرَها
وَجَشَّمَهُ الشَوقُ الَّذي تَتَجَشَّمُ
25. When you paraded the army, its splendor
Was above the horseman, relaxed with hanging spear
٢٥. وَلَمّا عَرَضتَ الجَيشَ كانَ بَهاؤُهُ
عَلى الفارِسِ المُرخى الذُؤابَةَ مِنهُمُ
26. Around it a sea churning with ships
In which an array of steeds, the noblest, sail
٢٦. حَوالَيهِ بَحرٌ لِلتَجافيفِ مائِجٌ
يَسيرُ بِهِ طَردٌ مِنَ الخَيلِ أَيهَمُ
27. Through it the regions became equal, as though
It gathered the parts of mountains and arranged them
٢٧. تَساوَت بِهِ الأَقطارُ حَتّى كَأَنَّهُ
يُجَمِّعُ أَشتاتَ الجِبالِ وَيَنظِمُ
28. And over the forehead of each young warrior for battle
Are lines of blows inscribed with pointed swords
٢٨. وَكُلُّ فَتىً لِلحَربِ فَوقَ جَبينِهِ
مِنَ الضَربِ سَطرٌ بِالأَسِنَّةِ مُعجَمُ
29. He extends his hands in the carnage, his fists clenching
And his eyes under the helmet, wakeful and vigilant
٢٩. يَمُدُّ يَديهِ في المُفاضَةِ ضَيغَمٌ
وَعَينَيهِ مِن تَحتِ التَريكَةِ أَرقَمُ
30. Like their breeds are their standards and emblems
And their attire and engraved weaponry
٣٠. كَأَجناسِها راياتُها وَشِعارُها
وَما لَبِسَتهُ وَالسِلاحُ المُسَمَّمُ
31. War's length trained them, so a glance
From afar signals them and they understand
٣١. وَأَدَّبَها طولُ القِتالِ فَطَرفُهُ
يُشيرُ إِلَيها مِن بَعيدٍ فَتَفهَمُ
32. They respond in deed though they know not revelation
And he whispers to them though he does not speak
٣٢. تُجاوِبُهُ فِعلاً وَما تَعرِفُ الوَحى
وَيُسمِعُها لَحظاً وَما يَتَكَلَّمُ
33. They shy from the right flank as if disdaining
To trample the fallen and show mercy
٣٣. تَجانَفُ عَن ذاتِ اليَمينِ كَأَنَّها
تَرِقُّ لِمِيّافارِقينَ وَتَرحَمُ
34. And if they were to ram it with their shoulders
Which of its weak, ruined walls would resist?
٣٤. وَلَو زَحَمَتها بِالمَناكِبِ زَحمَةً
دَرَت أَيُّ سورَيها الضَعيفُ المُهَدَّمُ
35. Upon each fallen warrior, beneath a warrior, as if
Watered with blood or fed with flesh
٣٥. عَلى كُلِّ طاوٍ تَحتَ طاوٍ كَأَنَّهُ
مِنَ الدَمِ يُسقى أَو مِنَ اللَحمِ يُطعَمُ
36. For them in fray is the mien of horsemen, and over them
Each steed draped in mail and helmeted
٣٦. لَها في الوَغى زِيُّ الفَوارِسِ فَوقَها
فَكُلُّ حِصانٍ دارِعٌ مُتَلَثِّمُ
37. Not from stinginess with souls against armor
But clashing evil with evil is more prudent
٣٧. وَما ذاكَ بُخلاً بِالنُفوسِ عَلى القَنا
وَلَكِنَّ صَدمَ الشَرِّ لِلشَرِّ أَحزَمُ
38. Do you reckon the white of India your origin?
How far astray you are in your imaginings!
٣٨. أَتَحسِبُ بيضُ الهِندِ أَصلَكَ أَصلَها
وَأَنَّكَ مِنها ساءَ ما تَتَوَهَّمُ
39. When we named you, we drew our swords
From their sheaths, smiling at your bewilderment
٣٩. إِذا نَحنُ سَمَّيناكَ خِلنا سُيوفَنا
مِنَ التيهِ في أَغمادِها تَتَبَسَّمُ
40. We never saw a king called without his aid
Pleased, though they are ignorant and you forbearing
٤٠. وَلَم نَرَ مَلكاً قَطُّ يُدعى بِدونِهِ
فَيَرضى وَلَكِن يَجهَلونَ وَتَحلُمُ
41. You seized every twist and turn against the enemies
Giving life to whom you will, and denying it to whom you will
٤١. أَخَذتَ عَلى الأَعداءِ كُلَّ ثَنِيَّةٍ
مِنَ العَيشِ تُعطي مَن تَشاءُ وَتَحرِمُ
42. No death is feared but from your blade
No livelihood divided but from your right hand
٤٢. فَلا مَوتَ إِلّا مِن سِنانِكَ يُتَّقى
وَلا رِزقَ إِلّا مِن يَمينِكَ يُقسَمُ
