1. Love did not prevent tongues from speaking
Nor did the most delicious complaint of a lover manifest
١. الحُبُّ ما مَنَعَ الكَلامَ الأَلسُنا
وَأَلَذُّ شَكوى عاشِقٍ ما أَعلَنا
2. I wish my beloved had deserted the towns
Without sin, while joining me in estrangement's connection
٢. لَيتَ الحَبيبَ الهاجِري هَجرَ الكَرى
مِن غَيرِ جُرمٍ واصِلي صِلَةَ الضَنا
3. We, if you had adorned us, you would not have known what
Our colors were, from what we were stained as we changed
٣. بِنّا فَلَو حَلَّيتَنا لَم تَدرِ ما
أَلوانُنا مِمّا اِمتُقِعنَ تَلَوُّنا
4. And our breaths ignited until, indeed
I worried the maidens would burn between us
٤. وَتَوَقَّدَت أَنفاسُنا حَتّى لَقَد
أَشفَقتُ تَحتَرِقُ العَواذِلُ بَينَنا
5. I sacrifice she who bid farewell whom I followed
With a look, alone, between sighs and moans
٥. أَفدي المُوَدِّعَةَ الَّتي أَتبَعتُها
نَظَراً فُرادى بَينَ زَفراتٍ ثُنا
6. I denied the knocking of events once
Then admitted to it, so it became our habit
٦. أَنكَرتُ طارِقَةَ الحَوادِثِ مَرَّةً
ثُمَّ اِعتَرَفتُ بِها فَصارَت دَيدَنا
7. And I roamed the world, aimless, and passed my time
In it, and my prime and those deceived
٧. وَقَطَعتُ في الدُنيا الفَلا وَرَكائِبي
فيها وَوَقتَيَّ الضُحى وَالمَوهِنا
8. And I stopped where the morning dew stopped me
And I reached the full moon of the son of 'Ammar
٨. وَوَقَفتُ مِنها حَيثُ أَوقَفَني النَدى
وَبَلَغتُ مِن بَدرِ اِبنِ عَمّارِ المُنا
9. For Abi al-Husayn, my grandfather, whose capacity
Falls short of him, even if the vessel were most vast
٩. لِأَبي الحُسَينِ جَدىً يَضيقُ وِعائُهُ
عَنهُ وَلَو كانَ الوِعاءُ الأَزمُنا
10. And a courage that made its mention suffice him
And its discourse prevented the coward from cowardice
١٠. وَشَجاعَةٌ أَغناهُ عَنها ذِكرُها
وَنَهى الجَبانَ حَديثُها أَن يَجبُنا
11. Its reins were tied to the shoulder of a warrior
Who never retreated, does he retreat? Nor bend
١١. نيطَت حَمائِلُهُ بِعاتِقِ مِحرَبٍ
ما كَرَّ قَطُّ وَهَل يَكُرُّ وَما اِنثَنى
12. So it was as if, while stabbed from the front
He frightened from behind that he may be stabbed
١٢. فَكَأَنَّهُ وَالطَعنُ مِن قُدّامِهِ
مُتَخَوِّفٌ مِن خَلفِهِ أَن يُطعَنا
13. The sharpness of his mind dismissed from him delusions
So the unknown matters were decided with certainty for him
١٣. نَفَتِ التَوَهُّمَ عَنهُ حِدَّةُ ذِهنِهِ
فَقَضى عَلى غَيبِ الأُمورُ تَيَقُّنا
14. The tyrant is startled by his suddenness
So he remains shrouded in his privacy
١٤. يَتَفَزَّعُ الجَبّارُ مِن بَغَتاتِهِ
فَيَظَلُّ في خَلَواتِهِ مُتَكَفِّنا
15. He accomplished his will so soon he will have power
And drew nearer the furthest so there he attained
١٥. أَمضى إِرادَتَهُ فَسَوفَ لَهُ قَدٌ
وَاِستَقرَبَ الأَقصى فَثَمَّ لَهُ هُنا
16. He finds iron against the softness of his skin
A garment lighter than silk and smoother
١٦. يَجِدُ الحَديدَ عَلى بَضاضَةِ جِلدِهِ
ثَوباً أَخَفَّ مِنَ الحَريرِ وَأَليَنا
17. And more bitter to him than the loss of loved ones
Is the loss of swords with missing sheaths
١٧. وَأَمَرُّ مِن فَقدِ الأَحِبَّةِ عِندَهُ
فَقدُ السُيوفِ الفاقِداتِ الأَجفُنا
18. Neither does fear reside in his ribs one day
Nor generosity that he should not be generous
١٨. لا يَستَكِنُّ الرُعبُ بَينَ ضُلوعِهِ
يَوماً وَلا الإِحسانُ أَن لا يُحسِنا
19. Inferring from his knowledge what tomorrow holds
As if what will happen in it is documented
١٩. مُستَنبِطٌ مِن عِلمِهِ ما في غَدٍ
فَكَأَنَّ ما سَيَكونُ فيهِ دُوِّنا
20. Minds fall short of comprehending him
Like the heavens and the earth in which we and creation are
٢٠. تَتَقاصَرُ الأَفهامُ عَن إِدراكِهِ
مِثلَ الَّذي الأَفلاكُ فيهِ وَالدُنا
21. Who is not of those he killed of his peers
Who is not of those who yielded of those weAlerted?
٢١. مَن لَيسَ مِن قَتلاهُ مِن طُلَقائِهِ
مَن لَيسَ مِمَّن دانَ مِمَّن حُيِّنا
22. When you turned from the coasts toward us
Desolation turned to them from our side
٢٢. لَمّا قَفَلتَ مِنَ السَواحِلِ نَحوَنا
قَفَلَت إِلَيها وَحشَةٌ مِن عِندِنا
23. The path swayed so you did not pass a place
Except the wild beasts dwelt there as residents
٢٣. أَرِجَ الطَريقُ فَما مَرَرتَ بِمَوضِعٍ
إِلّا أَقامَ بِهِ الشَذا مُستَوطِنا
24. If the trees you met could think
They would stretch greeting branches to you
٢٤. لَو تَعقِلُ الشَجَرُ الَّتي قابَلتَها
مَدَّت مُحَيِّيَةً إِلَيكَ الأَغصُنا
25. The spirits of domes' statues walked from
Yearning through them so their eyes turned to you
٢٥. سَلَكَت تَماثيلَ القِبابِ الجِنُّ مِن
شَوقٍ بِها فَأَدَرنَ فيكَ الأَعيُنا
26. Our ships were disturbed so we thought
If not for modesty, they would have danced with us
٢٦. طَرِبَت مَراكِبُنا فَخِلنا أَنَّها
لَولا حَياءٌ عاقَها رَقَصَت بِنا
27. You came smiling and the steeds frowning
Biting the doubled bridle and cheekpiece
٢٧. أَقبَلتَ تَبسِمُ وَالجِيادُ عَوابِسٌ
يَخبُبنَ بِالحَلَقِ المُضاعَفِ وَالقَنا
28. Their braids coiled upon them abundantly
If you sought a neck over them it enabled
٢٨. عَقَدَت سَنابِكُها عَلَيها عِثيَراً
لَو تَبتَغي عَنَقاً عَلَيهِ أَمكَنا
29. And the matter is your matter, and hearts in harmony
In a stance between demise and purpose
٢٩. وَالأَمرُ أَمرُكَ وَالقُلوبُ خَوافِقٌ
في مَوقِفٍ بَينَ المَنِيَّةِ وَالمُنى
30. So I was amazed until I was not amazed by gazelles
And I saw until I did not see from beauties
٣٠. فَعَجِبتُ حَتّى ما عَجِبتُ مِنَ الظُبى
وَرَأَيتُ حَتّى ما رَأَيتُ مِنَ السَنا
31. I see you a garrison of honors
In a garrison, and a mine of sublimities
٣١. إِنّي أَراكَ مِنَ المَكارِمِ عَسكَراً
في عَسكَرٍ وَمِنَ المَعالي مَعدِنا
32. So the heart perceived when I came by yearning
And when I left fearing you would perceive
٣٢. فَطِنَ الفُؤادُ لِما أَتَيتُ عَلى النَوى
وَلِما تَرَكتُ مَخافَةً أَن تَفطُنا
33. Your separation has become a punishment upon it
Not easy, that which I suffered from it
٣٣. أَضحى فِراقُكَ لي عَلَيهِ عُقوبَةً
لَيسَ الَّذي قاسَيتُ مِنهُ هَيِّنا
34. So forgive, a ransom for you, and love me after it
To confer upon me a gift from it, I
٣٤. فَاِغفِر فِدىً لَكَ وَاِحبُني مِن بَعدِها
لِتَخُصَّني بِعَطِيَّةٍ مِنها أَنا
35. And he who counseled you about me in error
For the free man is tested by the sons of fornication
٣٥. وَاِنهَ المُشيرَ عَلَيكَ فيَّ بِضَلَّةٍ
فَالحَرُّ مُمتَحِنٌ بِأَولادِ الزِنا
36. And when the young man tosses words dismissively
In a sitting, the sarcastic takes the words
٣٦. وَإِذا الفَتى طَرَحَ الكَلامَ مُعَرِّضاً
في مَجلِسٍ أَخَذَ الكَلامَ اللَذعَنا
37. And the schemes of fools befall them
And the enmity of poets is a miserable acquisition
٣٧. وَمَكايِدُ السُفَهاءِ واقِعَةٌ بِهِم
وَعَداوَةُ الشُعَراءِ بِئسَ المُقتَنى
38. Cursed is the company of the base one, for it
Is a guest that drags regret as a guest
٣٨. لُعِنَت مُقارَنَةُ اللَئيمِ فَإِنَّها
ضَيفٌ يَجِرُّ مِنَ النَدامَةِ ضَيفَنا
39. The anger of the envious when I meet you pleased
Is a mockery easier on me than to weigh us down
٣٩. غَضَبُ الحَسودِ إِذا لَقيتُكَ راضِياً
رُزءٌ أَخَفُّ عَلَيَّ مِن أَن يوزَنا
40. He who became with your Lord a disbeliever in the evening
Became from other than us, with us by your grace a believer
٤٠. أَمسى الَّذي أَمسى بِرَبِّكَ كافِراً
مِن غَيرِنا مَعَنا بِفَضلِكَ مُؤمِنا
41. The countries became devoid of gazelles in their nights
So may God compensate you so you would not grieve
٤١. خَلَتِ البِلادُ مِنَ الغَزالَةِ لَيلَها
فَأَعاضَهاكَ اللَهُ كَي لا تَحزَنا
