And we recall the Prince’s coming, sweet for me

13. Had I known it would cause this for him
My joy would grow with the increase of killing

14. Whenever Iraq knew no discord
That called you to it, banisher of fear and refuge

15. When spearheads glinted, we brandished our blades
Evoking you, keener than the sharpest blades

16. And flung their points, in your name, into the fray
More piercing than our lances, than arrows flying

17. If after battle you came upon us
Your memory had routed the foe beforehand

18. My heart has folded, before our reunion
Around a need, between latticework and paths

19. Had our secret not reached you through souls
Of steeds who spurn tribes for comrades

20. Horses who, passing wild beasts or a meadow
Refused any grazing but our hot brand

21. But I saw appropriation in excellence a partnership
So yours are the two excellences, of purpose and excel

22. Not one who pursues a lost mount is a guide
Like one met in his time by a guide of the lost

And trust wicked jackals with feeding

26. Dilayar guided to us every young she-camel
Whose cheeks sweep up crumbs of dates

27. And each steed whose hoof pounds the earth
Needing no iron shoes, shod with true shoes

28. They limp, spilling rain, and rain behind them
Seeking what was once in hand, now with foot

29. Fearing loss of wealth, while humiliated
I testify humiliation is worse than loss

30. She gifted us, though not intending it
The generous are preemptive in deed, not just word

31. With his bounty, he pursued the footsteps of gifts
As the sharp sword pursues the tongues of slander

32. His sword and scabbard cured every complainant
Even bereft mothers, of their bereavement

33. Chaste, the sun takes form from his face
Descending in longing, it would cling to shade

34. Valiant, as if war were his lover
When he visited, she ransomed him with horse and foot

35. Generous, his soul does not refuse wine
Thirsty, his hands are not sated by giving
