فَلَيسَ تَغيبُ إِلّا أَن يَغيبا

أَعُدُّ بِهِ عَلى الدَهرِ الذُنوبا

يَظَلُّ بِلَحظِ حُسّادي مَشوبا

١٧. وَما مَوتٌ بِأَبغَضَ مِن حَياةٍ
أَرى لَهُمُ مَعي فيها نَصيبا

18. I turn in it my lids as though
I tally up against fate sins.

١٨. عَرَفتُ نَوائِبَ الحَدَثانِ حَتّى
لَوِ اِنتَسَبَت لَكُنتُ لَها نَقيبا

19. No night outlasts a day
That remains disturbed by envious eyes.

١٩. وَلَمّا قَلَّتِ الإِبلُ اِمتَطينا
إِلى اِبنِ أَبي سُلَيمانَ الخُطوبا

وَلا يَبغي لَها أَحَدٌ رُكوبا

فَما فارَقتُها إِلّا جَديبا

أَتى مِن آلِ سَيّارٍ عَجيبا

They graze on herbage not on earthly growth;

٢٥. وَشَيخٌ في الشَبابِ وَلَيسَ شَيخاً
يُسَمّى كُلُّ مَن بَلَغَ المَشيبا

26. I left them only when rains deserted.
To one of noble traits whom my heart craves—

٢٦. قَسا فَالأُسدُ تَفزَعُ مِن قُواهُ
وَرَقَّ فَنَحنُ نَفزَعُ أَن يَذوبا

27. But for him, I'd have said they're beyond compare.

٢٧. أَشَدُّ مِنَ الرِياحِ الهوجِ بَطشاً
وَأَسرَعُ في النَدى مِنها هُبوبا

28. Every soul contests with me for its love
Though it resembles not the fawn's first milk.

٢٨. وَقالوا ذاكَ أَرمى مَن رَأَينا
فَقُلتُ رَأَيتُمُ الغَرَضَ القَريبا

29. A wonder in time—but what's a wonder?
It came from the wondrous house of Sayyar.

٢٩. وَهَل يُخطي بِأَسهُمِهِ الرَمايا
وَما يُخطي بِما ظَنَّ الغُيوبا

Aged in youth but no elder

٣٠. إِذا نُكِبَت كِنانَتُهُ اِستَبَنّا
بِأَنصُلِها لِأَنصُلِها نُدوبا

31. Called so if one attains gray hairs.
Hard, so lions dread his strength,

٣١. يُصيبُ بِبَعضِها أَفواقَ بَعضٍ
فَلَولا الكَسرُ لَاِتَصَلَت قَضيبا

32. And gentle, so we dread he'd melt.

٣٢. بِكُلِّ مُقَوَّمٍ لَم يَعصِ أَمراً
لَهُ حَتّى ظَنَنّاهُ لَبيبا

33. More vehement in rage than wind gusts
And swifter in dew than their blowing.

٣٣. يُريكَ النَزعُ بَينَ القَوسِ مِنهُ
وَبَينَ رَمِيِّهِ الهَدَفَ المَهيبا

٣٤. أَلَستَ اِبنَ الأُلى سَعِدوا وَسادوا
وَلَم يَلِدوا اِمرَءً إِلّا نَجيبا

بَعَثتَ إِلى المَسيحِ بِهِ طَبيبا

وَلَكِن زِدتَني فيها أَديبا

وَلا دانَيتَ يا شَمسُ الغُروبا

كَما أَنا آمِنٌ فيكَ العُيوبا
