1. Opinion before the bravery of the brave
Is the first, and bravery is the second place

١. الرَأيُ قَبلَ شَجاعَةِ الشُجعانِ
هُوَ أَوَّلٌ وَهِيَ المَحَلُّ الثاني

2. So when they both gather in a free soul
It reaches the highest of high places

٢. فَإِذا هُما اِجتَمَعا لِنَفسٍ حُرّةٍ
بَلَغَت مِنَ العَلياءِ كُلَّ مَكانِ

3. And sometimes the young man stabs his peers
With opinion before the stabbing of peers

٣. وَلَرُبَّما طَعَنَ الفَتى أَقرانَهُ
بِالرَأيِ قَبلَ تَطاعُنِ الأَقرانِ

4. Without intellects, the lowest of insects
Would be closer to glory than mankind

٤. لَولا العُقولُ لَكانَ أَدنى ضَيغَمٍ
أَدنى إِلى شَرَفٍ مِنَ الإِنسانِ

5. And had souls not been distinguished and managed
The hands of the unripe, the steeds unbroken

٥. وَلَما تَفاضَلَتِ النُفوسُ وَدَبَّرَت
أَيدي الكُماةِ عَوالِيَ المُرّانِ

6. Without his sharp swords and their brightness
They would have been drawn as eyelids closed

٦. لَولا سَمِيُّ سُيوفِهِ وَمَضاؤُهُ
لَمّا سُلِلنَ لَكُنَّ كَالأَجفانِ

7. He entered the battle till none could tell
Whether from disdain or just forgetfulness

٧. خاضَ الحِمامَ بِهِنَّ حَتّى ما دُرى
أَمِنِ اِحتِقارٍ ذاكَ أَم نِسيانِ

8. He fell short of his goal though he struggled and raced
The people of this time and people of every time

٨. وَسَعى فَقَصَّرَ عَن مَداهُ في العُلى
أَهلُ الزَمانِ وَأَهلُ كُلِّ زَمانِ

9. They took the gatherings in homes and by him
That saddles are the gatherings of young men

٩. تَخِذوا المَجالِسَ في البُيوتِ وَعِندَهُ
أَنَّ السُروجَ مَجالِسُ الفِتيانِ

10. And imagined play and jesting and stabbing
Other than battlefield stabbing, the crazed babbling

١٠. وَتَوَهَّموا اللَعِبَ الوَغى وَالطَعنُ في ال
هَيجاءِ غَيرُ الطَعنِ في المَيدانِ

11. He led the steeds to battle and did not lead
Except to customs and homelands

١١. قادَ الجِيادَ إِلى الطِعانِ وَلَم يَقُد
إِلّا إِلى العاداتِ وَالأَوطانِ

12. Every son of a swift camelia changes with his beauty
In his companion's heart over sorrows

١٢. كُلُّ اِبنِ سابِقَةٍ يُغيرُ بِحُسنِهِ
في قَلبِ صاحِبِهِ عَلى الأَحزانِ

13. If left unrestrained, tied by the ethics of battle
Their calling suffices instead of horsemen

١٣. إِن خُلِّيَت رُبِطَت بِآدابِ الوَغى
فَدُعاؤُها يُغني عَنِ الأَرسانِ

14. In a mighty army, its dust veils
Eyes, as if they see with their ears

١٤. في جَحفَلٍ سَتَرَ العُيونَ غُبارُهُ
فَكَأَنَّما يُبصِرنَ بِالآذانِ

15. With it the distant land he strikes victorious
For him all distant is near and submissive

١٥. يَرمي بِها البَلَدَ البَعيدَ مُظَفَّرٌ
كُلُّ البَعيدِ لَهُ قَريبٌ دانِ

16. As if their legs with Manbij's soil
Cast their hands at Hisn al-Ranid

١٦. فَكَأَنَّ أَرجُلَها بِتُربَةِ مَنبِجٍ
يَطرَحنَ أَيدِيَها بِحِصنِ الرانِ

17. Until they crossed the Orontes swimming
There spreading the turbans of horsemen

١٧. حَتّى عَبَرنَ بِأَرسَناسَ سَوابِحاً
يَنشُرنَ فيهِ عَمائِمَ الفُرسانِ

18. Seizing in a span of vastness from cool water
Leaving the stallions as if they were geldings

١٨. يَقمُصنَ في مِثلِ المُدى مِن بارِدٍ
يَذَرُ الفُحولَ وَهُنَّ كَالخِصيانِ

19. And the water between two barnacle geese delivers
Parting them and then uniting

١٩. وَالماءُ بَينَ عَجاجَتَينِ مُخَلِّصٌ
تَتَفَرَّقانِ بِهِ وَتَلتَقِيانِ

20. The prince galloped, his love like two floods
Bent the spear shafts as if they were saplings

٢٠. رَكَضَ الأَميرُ وَكَاللُجَينِ حَبابُهُ
وَثَنى الأَعِنَّةَ وَهوَ كَالعِقيانِ

21. He cut the ropes from above, built him a ship
From the planks and loaded it with females

٢١. فَتَلَ الحِبالَ مِنَ الغَدائِرِ فَوقَهُ
وَبَنى السَفينَ لَهُ مِنَ الصُلبانِ

22. Barren bellied, mixed colored, that bring
What the horses seized, as if under the cinches

٢٢. وَحَشاهُ عادِيَةً بِغَيرِ قَوائِمٍ
عُقمَ البُطونِ حَوالِكَ الأَلوانِ

23. Doe beds of fawns. A sea accustomed
To subdue for its people the dawns and raiders

٢٣. تَأتي بِما سَبَتِ الخُيولُ كَأَنَّها
تَحتَ الحِسانِ مَرابِضُ الغِزلانِ

24. You left it, though it raged against mankind
Making exception for the Hamdanid clan

٢٤. بَحرٌ تَعَوَّدَ أَن يُذِمَّ لِأَهلِهِ
مِن دَهرِهِ وَطَوارِقِ الحَدَثانِ

25. Guarding with every bare sharp sword
Responsible for the armor over turbaned heads

٢٥. فَتَرَكتَهُ وَإِذا أَذَمَّ مِنَ الوَرى
راعاكَ وَاِستَثنى بَني حَمدانِ

26. Haughty in the density of their kingdom
Humble in magnificent position

٢٦. المُخفِرينَ بِكُلِّ أَبيَضَ صارِمٍ
ذِمَمَ الدُروعِ عَلى ذَوي التيجانِ

27. Seeking shade of each striped cloak
A mighty shade, a steed unsaddled

٢٧. مُتَصَعلِكينَ عَلى كَثافَةِ مُلكِهِم
مُتَواضِعينَ عَلى عَظيمِ الشانِ

28. Bowed before your cleansing blade perforce
And your religion humbled all religions

٢٨. يَتَقَيَّلونَ ظِلالَ كُلِّ مُطَهَّمٍ
أَجَلِ الظَليمِ وَرِبقَةِ السَرحانِ

29. On the roads, in returning, precaution
And traveling prevented by inability

٢٩. خَضَعَت لِمُنصُلِكَ المَناصِلُ عَنوَةً
وَأَذَلَّ دينُكَ سائِرَ الأَديانِ

30. The paths have narrow straits with spears
And disbelief assembled against belief

٣٠. وَعَلى الدُروبِ وَفي الرُجوعِ غَضاضَةٌ
وَالسَيرُ مُمتَنِعٌ مِنَ الإِمكانِ

31. They looked upon iron mass as if it
Rose between shoulder blades of eagles

٣١. وَالطُرقُ ضَيِّقَةُ المَسالِكِ بِالقَنا
وَالكُفرُ مُجتَمِعٌ عَلى الإيمانِ

32. And horsemen whom battle enlivens their souls
As if they were not of animals

٣٢. نَظَروا إِلى زُبَرِ الحَديدِ كَأَنَّما
يَصعَدنَ بَينَ مَناكِبِ العِقبانِ

33. Youcontinued to smite them in the fray twofold
A strike as if the sword were doubled

٣٣. وَفَوارِسٍ يُحَيِ الحِمامُ نُفوسَها
فَكَأَنَّها لَيسَت مِنَ الحَيَوانِ

34. Specific to the skulls and faces as if
Their corpses had come to you in truce

٣٤. ما زِلتَ تَضرِبُهُم دِراكاً في الذُرى
ضَرباً كَأَنَّ السَيفَ فيهِ اِثنانِ

35. So they threw what they threw and turned away
Stepping every gentle pass flexible

٣٥. خَصَّ الجَماجِمَ وَالوُجوهَ كَأَنَّما
جاءَت إِلَيكَ جُسومُهُم بِأَمانِ

36. Shower's rain drenched them in phases
With lancer and piercing and fencer

٣٦. فَرَمَوا بِما يَرمونَ عَنهُ وَأَدبَروا
يَطَؤونَ كُلَّ حَنِيَّةٍ مِرنانِ

37. Deprived of what they hoped and attained of them
Those who returned in deprivation of hopes

٣٧. يَغشاهُمُ مَطَرُ السَحابِ مُفَصَّلاً
بِمُثَقَّفٍ وَمُهَنَّدٍ وَسِنانِ

38. And when the spears preoccupied the insides of a rebel
His insides preoccupied him from his brothers

٣٨. حُرِموا الَّذي أَمِلوا وَأَدرَكَ مِنهُمُ
آمالَهُ مَن عادَ بِالحِرمانِ

39. Alas, they were too noble for retaliation
Many killed by them and few harmed

٣٩. وَإِذا الرِماحُ شَغَلنَ مُهجَةَ ثائِرٍ
شَغَلَتهُ مُهجَتُهُ عَنِ الإِخوانِ

40. And refined, he commanded deaths among them
So he obeyed in obeying the Merciful

٤٠. هَيهاتَ عاقَ عَنِ العِوادِ قَواضِبٌ
كَثُرَ القَتيلُ بِها وَقَلَّ العاني

41. Their hair had blackened the trees of the mountains
As if amongst it were the cinders of crows

٤١. وَمُهَذَّبٌ أَمَرَ المَنايا فيهِمِ
فَأَطَعنَهُ في طاعَةِ الرَحمَنِ

42. And the sap flowed on the leaves, drooping
As if it were the orange in the branches

٤٢. قَد سَوَّدَت شَجَرَ الجِبالِ شُعورُهُم
فَكَأَنَّ فيهِ مُسِفَّةَ الغِربانِ

43. The swords are with those whose hearts
Are like theirs when two armies meet

٤٣. وَجَرى عَلى الوَرَقِ النَجيعُ القاني
فَكَأَنَّهُ النارَنجُ في الأَغصانِ

44. Meeting the blade in the sharpness of its edge
Is like the coward with the palm of every coward

٤٤. إِنَّ السُيوفَ مَعَ الَّذينَ قُلوبُهُم
كَقُلوبِهِنَّ إِذا اِلتَقى الجَمعانِ

45. With you the Arabs raised the pillar and made
The summits of kings into hearths

٤٥. تَلقى الحُسامَ عَلى جَراءَةِ حَدِّهِ
مِثلَ الجَبانِ بِكَفِّ كُلِّ جَبانِ

46. Lineages of their pride to you, though the
Lineages of their origin are to Adnan

٤٦. رَفَعَت بِكَ العَرَبُ العِمادَ وَصَيَّرَت
قِمَمَ المُلوكِ مَواقِدَ النيرانِ

47. O you who kills whom he wants with his sword
I have become, from your killing, in comfort

٤٧. أَنسابُ فَخرِهِمِ إِلَيكَ وَإِنَّما
أَنسابُ أَصلِهِمِ إِلى عَدنانِ

48. So when I see you, my eyes are dazzled by you
And when I praise you, my tongue is bewildered by you

٤٨. يا مَن يُقَتِّلُ مَن أَرادَ بِسَيفِهِ
أَصبَحتُ مِن قَتلاكَ بِالإِحسانِ
